Glorp/Seaside experience exchange on- or offline, anybody?

by jtuchel＠objektfabrik.de

Hi there, since nobody at ESUG seemed to be interested in a Glorp/Seaside BOF as I suggested, I try something new now ;-) Glorp is a great tool for OR mapping and works very well. There is good introductory material, even if it is hard to find. But when it comes to real world use, there are many questions to be answered like * how to handle transactions, mementos, units of work and that stuff, especially in a multi-user environment like a Seaside based web app * how to map more complicated things, like polymorphic joins, embedded objects etc. * what if an image slows down gradually when a user has been working for hours, almsot coming to a standstill. How to find out if Glorp or your use of it is the problem? What can you do then? * Is my use of transactions correct or will I face problems None of these are easy questions and maybe there are many possible answers to them, But finding them on your own can be hard and take a lot of time. It can even be a risk to your business. There is the Glorp group, but it's not actually in heavy use and sometimes it is hard to write down a problem in a few lines. Explaining the whole thing sometimes would make for loooong messages that probably nobody ever reads, esp. if the poster's english isn't brilliant. So what I'm looking for is ways to find and meet people who also use Glorp (or any other ORM in Smalltalk) and would be interested in discussing stuff and maybe answer questions. Something like a Glorp users group. The best thing to exchange ideas is probably to meet face to face and carry your laptop with you. So if anybody in Southern Germany, Eastern France, Northern Switzerland would be interested in such a meeting, please let me know and I am more than interested in setting something up. The second best is probably some sort of online conference call. Maybe even on a regular basis. Please let me know if you'd be interested. UK Smalltalk User Group Meeting - Monday, September 25th - Fizzylogo: a Smalltalk-72 lookalike

by Giovanni Corriga

The next meeting of the UK Smalltalk User Group Meeting will be on Monday, 25th September. We'll meet at a new venue The City Pride ( http://www.cityprideclerkenwell.co.uk/ ) at 7pm. Davide Della Casa will present *Fizzylogo: a Smalltalk-72 lookalike. *An excellent excuse to revisit how early Smalltalk versions (the languages, and the environments) worked under the hood, including Smalltalk-72 and Rosetta Smalltalk. If you'd like to join us, you can just show up at the pub. You can also sign up in advance at the meeting's Meetup page: https://www.meetup.com/UKSTUG/events/243468885 . See you there!

Re: [Esug-list] Paper notepad found @ ESUG

by Dale Henrichs

Luc, That is my notepad ... Fortunately, there were no important notes in that notepad so you can dispose of it ... I had lost another notepad at the same time, that did have important notes and I recovered that one at the conference. Thanks! SAC 2018 is sponsored by the ACM Special Interest Group on Applied Computing (SIGAPP) and is hosted by hosted by Université de Pau et des Pays de l'Adour (UPPA), Pau, France. - Call For Student Research Abstracts Graduate students seeking feedback from the scientific community on their research ideas are invited to submit original abstracts of their research work in areas of experimental computing and application development related to SAC 2018 Tracks. The Student Research Competition (SRC) Program is designed to provide graduate students the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with researchers and practitioners in their areas of interest. - OOPS Track: Aims and Topics Object-oriented programming (OOP) has become the mainstream programming paradigm for developing complex software systems in most application domains. However, existing OO languages and platforms need to evolve to meet the continuous demand for new abstractions, features, and tools able to reduce the time, effort, and cost of creating object-oriented software systems, and improving their performance, quality and usability. To this aim, OOPS is seeking for research advances bringing benefits in all those typical aspects of software development, such as modeling, prototyping, design, implementation, concurrency and distribution, code generation, analysis, verification, testing, debugging, evaluation, deployment, maintenance, reuse, and software evolution and adaptation. The specific topics of interest for the OOPS track include, but are not limited to, the following: * Aspects and components * Code generation, and optimization, just-in-time compilation * Context-oriented programming * Databases and persistence * Distribution and concurrency * Dynamic and scripting languages * Evaluation * Feature Oriented Software Development and Programming * Formal verification * Internet of Things technology and programming * Integration with other paradigms * Interoperability, versioning and software evolution and adaptation * Language design and implementation * Modular and generic programming * Reflection, meta-programming * Runtime verification and monitoring * Safe, secure and dependable software * Static analysis * Testing and debugging * Type systems and type inference * Virtual machines OOPS offers a great opportunity to the OOP community to gain visibility, and to exploit the inter-disciplinary nature of SAC. - Submission Instructions Prospective papers should be submitted to the track in pdf format using the START submission system for regular and SRC papers available through the SAC 2018 home page. Submission of the same paper to multiple tracks is not allowed; all papers should represent original and previously unpublished works that are currently not under review in any conference or journal. Both basic and applied research papers are welcome. SAC 2018 will use double-blind reviewing; to facilitate this, author name(s) and institution(s) must be omitted, and references to authors' own related work should be in the third person. The format of the paper must adhere to the sig-alternate style (http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates) Full papers are limited to 8 pages, in camera-ready format, included in the registration fee. Authors have the option to include up to two (2) extra pages at additional fee of US$80 per page. Papers accepted as posters are limited to 3 pages, in camera-ready format, included in the registration fee. Authors have the option to include only one (1) extra page at additional fee of US$80. SRC abstracts are limited to 2 pages, in camera-ready format, included in the registration fee. No extra pages are allowed. Papers that fall short the above requirements are subjected to rejection. All papers must be submitted by September 15, 2017. For more information please visit the SAC 2018 home page. - Proceedings Accepted papers will be published by ACM in the annual conference proceedings. Accepted posters will be published as extended abstracts in the same proceedings. Paper registration is required, allowing the inclusion of the papers and posters in the conference proceedings. An author or a proxy attending SAC MUST present the paper. This is a requirement for all accepted papers, posters, and invited SRC submissions to be included in the ACM digital library. No-show of scheduled papers, posters, and student research abstracts will result in excluding them from the ACM digital library. Student registration is only intended to encourage student attendance and does not cover inclusion of papers/posters in the conference proceedings. Finally, following the tradition of the past OOPS editions (http://oops.disi.unige.it/special-issues) depending on the quality and the overall number of accepted papers, authors of selected papers will be invited to submit an extended version for a journal special issue ( http://oops.disi.unige.it/special-issues) after the conference.

Let's prepare for Google Code-In 2017 with Pharo Consortium

by Jigyasa Grover

Hello Pharo-ers ! On behalf of the community, I would like to thank each one of you for their significant contribution in the recently concluded *Google Summer of Code 2017* with *Pharo Consortium*. We aspire to take-off on a long flight after this successful stint. In this spirit, I proposed at ESUG 2017 that we take part in the upcoming *Google Code-In 2017*. GCI is a contest to introduce pre-university students (ages 13-17) to open source software development. Because Google Code-in is often the first experience many students have with open source, the contest is designed to make it easy for students to jump right in with /bite-sized tasks/ (3 to 5 days) having categorised as: Code, Documentation/Training, Outreach/Research, Quality Assurance, or User Interface. Students search for a task from the list created by us that interests them and claim it. They have at least three days to complete it. The student works on the task, getting guidance from mentors, if needed. Once the student is ready, they submit their work for review through the contest website. Mentors from the organisation evaluate the work, provide feedback, and if it's complete, accept it so that student can claim a new task. Otherwise, specific feedback is provided, and the student goes back to improving it. Participants who complete at least 1 task get a digital certificate. Participants who complete 3 or more tasks receive a t-shirt too. At the end of the contest, each organisation chooses five finalists to receive limited edition Google Code-in hoodies. Two finalists from each organisation get to be the grand prize winners and go on a trip to Google Headquarters in California ! The contest runs for about 6-8 weeks in December & January generally. With organisation applications beginning in October/November, we need to be well prepared for this season’s application with a hope to get selected. As an open source evangelist and a Pharo developer, I would like to invite all the experienced members to be a part of the "GCI with Pharo Consortium" Team and mentor students. To get added to the “private repository” (we need to keep prospective students away from the task list before the program begins 😉 ) where you can put in your tasks/suggestions kindly EMail me or any of the previously added mentor. Looking forward to an appreciable representation from the Pharo community.
