We also have postdoc positions. ========================================================================== Full-Time Academic Positions Department of Computer Science University of Chile Closing: Sept. 12, 2018 -= The Positions =- The Department of Computer Science (DCC) is offering two full-time permanent positions to carry out research and teaching, both undergraduate and graduate, starting on March 1, 2019 at the latest. As assistant professors in tenure-track positions, the candidates are expected to develop a strong and competitive research program. -= The Candidates=- Candidates should be pursuing internationally recognized research in one of these research areas: - Artificial intelligence - Software engineering - Security and privacy - Computer Systems Organization and Networks - Applied Computing (Physical Sciences and Engineering, or Life and Medical Sciences) - Human-centered Computing The successful candidates are expected to complement existing strengths of the Department activities. The candidates should hold a Ph.D. degree or be Ph.D. students who will obtain their degrees before starting the appointment. The candidates must have demonstrated excellence in research and scholarship within the field of interest. Successful candidates will be expected to: - move to Santiago, Chile (if currently living elsewhere) - establish and lead their own research team - deliver innovative research at the highest international standard - deliver high quality teaching - supervise undergraduate, master and PhD students - obtain competitive research funding from external funding bodies - write and speak English fluently - obtain a good command of Spanish within 1 year of appointment -= The Department of Computer Science (DCC) =- The DCC is the leading Computer Science Department in Chile, and one of the most active in Latin America. It pioneered the use of Unix and the adoption of the Internet in Chile. Today, it has 21 full-time professors, 8 of which came from Argentina, Uruguay, France, and Ireland. They carry out research at the highest level, publishing over 100 articles per year in international conferences and journals. The Department is responsible for teaching Computer Science, with about 200 undergraduates majoring Computer Science, 50 MSc and 40 PhD students. -= Salary =- Salary, paid in Chilean pesos, is about US$48,000 per year, after taxes, health insurance, and pension fund contribution. Sponsoring a student (woman) to attend ESUG

Hi Community I would like to know if some of you are interested to sponsor Agouf Nour Djihan She is a smart student from algeria that followed my advanced lecture last spring. In fact she was one of the best student (she did the exercises alone and came from another university to follow my lectures). She got really excited by Smalltalk. She did my reflective kernel booklet and the Scheme interpreter booklet. ESUG accepted her as student volunteer and we have as a policy not to sponsor trips because we could not support students coming from the rest of the world. Hey guys - let’s not shoot the messenger on this. All feedback gratefully received, we know there’s still lots of work to do even after the excellent progress that has been made. I know at times I get frustrated too , but am inspired by some of the great things going on. Equally it hurts to get negative feedback too. We need to rally together to get some of this stuff finished, and keep chipping away at things. I’d like to better understand the original problem - do we still have this encoding/decoding problem in Pharo 7? And can we ensure common things are documented in a clear place for others to follow. I think we have a bit of a documentation versioning issue - as lots of old things seem to come up in search results (our SEO is not brilliant on this - although a move to github might help a lot if we can create good pointers in readme.md files). This doesn’t seem like an unsolvable problem, and I’d like to see us learn from someone who has experienced something concrete. I'm not talking about advocacy :). And Pharo is for growing business but also in a community manner because all together sharing code we get stronger. Hi Stef, good point - the days when I was into Smalltalk advocacy seem to be long gone. Point taken ;-) Like yours, my day has roughly about 24 hours and I am trying to build and run a business and a family. A few years ago, it was way easier for me to blog and podcast and stuff. Smalltalk advocacy is not on my agenda very often these days - I hope I can improve on that. +1 on Sven's excellent work, both in code and documentation as well as his helpfulness on all forums. So what do you do to improve the situation of our community? I mean do you think documentation autowrite itself? Did you write something that others can use? You see from time to time I would love to read docs that I did not write. If people would follow sven excellent practices our framework would be a lot better documented. Although I too would much prefer to work in Smalltalk, extenuating circumstances pushed me into C++ and Python during the first half of this year. Much of my experience reinforced my bias toward Smalltalk, but I did find some aspects of the tools to be attractive. My goal for ESUG is to present some of lessons and offer some on-line resources that make Smalltalk a bit more approachable. In particular, I’m looking at Ace, a web-based code editor used in Cloud 9 (https://ace.c9.io/ <https://ace.c9.io/>) and the Jupyter notebook (http://jupyter.org/ <http://jupyter.org/>). Cheers!
