[ESUG conference] What are the prerequisites for teh "AI for Dummies" tutorial

by jtuchel＠objektfabrik.de

Hi, I wonder what I should have pre-installed for Alexandre's tutorial on Monday afternoon. Which Pharo version, Tensorflow (where to get etc.) whatever. Or is this going to be a slide-show only? Joachim

Why being a Pharo Association Member matters?

by Stéphane Ducasse

Hi Pharo supporters First I would like thank you. And I would like to show you that your membership in the Pharo association is really helping Pharo. We are creating a precise report but the main message is the same. You concretely help Pharo. First, we would like to really thank you for your support because as you will see it is important. Your contributions are making an impact. Until now, the association did not make visible how was spent the money from your membership. It's time to fix this. In the first place, the support we got from last year enable the creation of monthly activities helping with the development of Pharo. The association is now the support for the following ones: Sprint organisations: Every month sprints to correct Pharo bugs are organised. You can join remotely or organise one at your location TechTalks: Every month a technical talk is been done to give visibility on Pharo process and Pharo projects and interact with the community to get feedback Next, your association contributions are securing vital Pharo infrastructures. It pays: The domains such as pharo.org. The hosting files.pharo.org: This year we moved out of Inria infrastructure because we could not identify the cause of a huge network latency. It got resolved - it was a fiber which was in bad condition but not cut. This was fixed at the level of Renater national back-bone layer, but we decided to stay outside. We plan to migrate to a better service. The wild apricot software which manages the association. It will enable us to do more with the association. (40$/month) The newsletter via Mailchimp. This newsletter is a real success with more than 2300 recipients . [NGPS at SAC 2019] extended submission deadline Sept 24

by Nick Papoylias

------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Next Generation Programming Paradigms and Systems (NGPS 2019) Track of the 34th ACM/SIGAPP Symposium On Applied Computing Limassol, Cyprus https://ngps2019.github.io/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- IMPORTANT DATES *Sept 24, 2018 (extended)* Submission of regular papers and SRC research abstracts *Nov 24, 2018 (extended)* Notification of paper acceptance/rejection *Nov 24, 2018 (extended)* Notification of SRC acceptance/rejection *Dec 10, 2018 (extended)* Camera-ready copies of accepted papers/SRC Dec 10, 2018 Author registration due date April 8-12, 2019 ACM SAC Conference AIMS AND TOPICS The complexity of modern software systems is continuously growing together with the communication capabilities and computational power of pervasive technology, embodied by a wide range of interacting heterogeneous smart devices. This new scenario is posing serious challenges to software development, which hardly keeps pace with this technological evolution. Sophisticated frameworks exposed through application programming interfaces, or directly integrated with mainstream programming languages provide partial solutions to support big data streaming and complex analytic; dynamic, autonomous, and collective coordination and adaptation capabilities; emergent behavior in cooperating systems; Internet of Things (IoT) systems development and maintenance; and employment of cloud platforms and parallel architectures, in particular heterogeneous ones. This calls for new abstractions, features, middlewares and tools able to reduce the time, effort, and cost of designing and developing the next generation software systems, improving performance, and ensuring reliability and security. To this aim, NGPS is seeking to advance the state-of-the-art and the state-of-the-practice of computational models and paradigms, formal techniques and software methods for easing software development and verification, and improving efficiency of complex modern systems. The specific topics of interest for the NGPS track include, but are not limited to, the following: - Integration of computational paradigms - Runtime verification and monitoring - Platforms for the Cloud - IoT systems - Secure and dependable software - Formal models and verification - Testing and debugging - System evaluation - Design, implementation and optimization of high-level programming languages - Middleware platforms - Scenarios, case studies and experience reports on innovative applications - High-level parallel programming - Distributed systems and concurrency - Development tools - Coordination models, specification, and technologies - Multi-agent systems, mobile agents, intelligent agents, and agent-based simulations - Models, frameworks and tools for Collective Adaptive Systems - Internet, Web, and pervasive computing systems - Self-organizing, self-adaptive, context-aware and nature-inspired systems - Security, trust and privacy management SUBMISSIONS Prospective papers should be submitted to the track in pdf format using the START submission system for regular and SRC papers available through the SAC 2019 home page. Submission of the same paper to multiple tracks is not allowed; all papers should represent original and previously unpublished works that are currently not under review in any conference or journal. Both basic and applied research papers are welcome. SAC 2019 will use double-blind reviewing; to facilitate this, author name(s) and institution(s) must be omitted, and references to authors’ own related work should be in the third person. The format of the paper must adhere to the sig-alternate style. Full papers are limited to 8 pages, in camera-ready format, included in the registration fee. Authors have the option to include up to two (2) extra pages at additional fee of US$80 per page. Papers accepted as posters are limited to 3 pages, in camera-ready format, included in the registration fee. Authors have the option to include only one (1) extra page at additional fee of US$80. SRC abstracts are limited to 4 pages, in camera-ready format, included in the registration fee. No extra pages are allowed. Accepted papers will be published by ACM in the annual conference proceedings. Accepted posters will be published as extended abstracts in the same proceedings. Papers that fall short the above requirements are subjected to rejection. All papers must be submitted by September 10, 2018. For more information please visit the SAC 2019 home page. Paper registration is required, allowing the inclusion of the paper/poster in the conference proceedings. An author or a proxy attending SAC MUST present the paper: This is a requirement for the paper/poster to be included in the ACM/IEEE digital library. No-show of scheduled papers and posters will result in excluding them from the ACM/IEEE digital library. Re: [Esug-list] [squeak-dev] Smalltalk Security Landscape - survey for ESUG 2018

by Jerry Kott

Thank you Eliot and Tobias, and everyone else who sent me feedback - either directly or in one of the optional questions. All good suggestions. Regarding the dialect ranking: Originally I had a number of others on the list but surveymonkey suggested that long ranking lists are confusing and furstrating for respondents because it could take a long time to spend on a single question trying to sort the list. I thought that was a sensible ‘smart tip’ and shortened the list to include only the mainstream. My apologies if Squeakers or others feel excluded. I don’t want to change anything on the survey at this time to make the questions consistent. The survey is open until the end of August. I am sure I could have done better, but this was my first survey, and on a fairly broad subject. I hope it was not the last, and that in the future I may have some collaborators to hash out the details. Either way … in its first day the survey got a very good number of responses, and I think it will give me material for several presentations ;) Thank you all who participated. It means a lot. Please spread the word. Jerry Kott This message has been digitally signed. Smalltalk Security Landscape - survey for ESUG 2018

by Jerry Kott

Dear Smalltalkers and friends, I am planning to have a presentation titled ‘Smalltalk Security Landscape’ at this year’s ESUG conference. In my presentation I hope to increase cybersecurity awareness within the Smalltalk community and help shape the evolution of the language and its ecosystem. I have put together a survey to help me research the topic. I ask for your kind help to get a picture of where Smalltalk stands in the area of cybersecurity. The survey is completely anonymous, and should take less than 15 minutes to complete. I appreciate your time and participation. If you are in a management role, I would like your help by forwarding this to your team members to help reach the broad Smalltalk community. Here is a link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/esug2018 <https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/esug2018> Thank you for your help, and hope to see you in Cagliari!
