UK Smalltalk User Group Meeting - Wednesday, November 25th
by Giovanni Corriga
The next meeting of the UK Smalltalk User Group will be on Wednesday,
November 25th.
Stephen Travis Pope will present Siren9 and CSL6 - Frameworks and
Applications for Sound/Music Creation and Processing.
The Siren system ( https://github.com/stpope/Siren9 ) is a general-purpose
software framework for music and sound composition, processing,
performance, and analysis; it is a collection of about 350 classes written
in Smalltalk-80 (40 kLOC or so). The current version of Siren (9.0) works
on VisualWorks Smalltalk and supports streaming I/O via OpenSoundControl
(OSC), MIDI, and multi-channel audio ports. The CREATE Signal Library
(CSL)( https://github.com/stpope/CSL6 ) is a cross-platform C++ framework
for digital audio signal synthesis, analysis, spatialization and
interactive sound/music application development. CSL was developed at the
University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) starting in the late 1990s.
This presentation will introduce both package and demonstrate their use
together to construct real-time compositional and music synthesis software.
Stephen Travis Pope ( http://heaveneverywhere.com/stp ) is an award-winning
composer, film-maker, computer scientist and social activist based in Santa
Barbara, California. He is currently active as a software development
contractor and intellectual property expert through FASTLab. His music and
video compositions are released through HeavenEverywhere Media. Stephen has
used the Smalltalk programming system since 1984 and made several
significant contributions to it, though he remains frustrated by
programming environments in general.
Given the current COVID-19 restrictions, this will be an online meeting
from home.
If you'd like to join us, please sign up in advance on the meeting's Meetup
page ( https://www.meetup.com/UKSTUG/events/cbklbrybcpbhc/ ) to receive the
meeting details. Don’t forget to bring your laptop and drinks!

[Ann] Pharo new version available & mooc needs subtitle translaters
by Stéphane Ducasse
Hello
We are about to launch the new version of the Pharo mooc. Spread the word around you. It will open the 9th of november
https://www.fun-mooc.fr/courses/course-v1:inria+41024+session01/about
This new version contains
70 new videos about the Pharo ide (in french and english voice) + subtitles
better english dubs
Now we are looking for help for the subtitles
All the subtitles of the previous mooc and the new ones are at
https://github.com/pharo-mooc/PharoMooc/tree/master/2020-All-Subtitles-Reor…
The new ones in folders named C048SD or 2018-Prese*
The old ones in folders named C019SD.
For example in https://github.com/pharo-mooc/PharoMooc/tree/master/2020-All-Subtitles-Reor…
you see the files for the old videos that we will reuse for this new mooc
as well as the subtitles in french and english for the new videos.
We are looking for subtitles in Spanish, Japanese for the new files:
in C048 and 2018-PresequelOOP-ENG folder, files named W*-Live* or W*-Redo*
Of course we would love to have the subtitles in portugese and german too, and any other language :).
Thanks in advance for your time. But this mooc is really important for our community.

Re: [Esug-list] IWST event date and participant poll
by Vincent Aranega
Hi everyone,
@Christian Thanks for the time table, it helped us a lot to drive our
discussions about the even organization.
So far, regarding Martin and Serge comments, we decided to schedule the
event on two days, Wednesday the 17th and Thursday the 18th of November.
Currently, we are scheduling the event for 4pm-6pm Paris hours, but we
would like to know more precisely in which timezone you are and which
track you would prefer to attend (could be all of them) . Depending on
the results, we could try to shift for +/- 1h the beginning of the track.
We have two main tracks: langage/VM and debug/tests. We put a new poll
(again...) with some choices regarding to your place and your track
interests: https://fast-poll.com/poll/28735962
Thanks for your participations!

how many attendees are in which time zones is useful for scheduling. And
the presenters -- I certainly don't want any of *them* to have to be
alert enough to give a good presentation in the middle of their night,
just for my own convenience.

Re: [Esug-list] IWST event date and participant poll
by Serge Stinckwich
Hi all,
I think this will be difficult to find a correct time zone for everyone.
I'm UTC+8, so doing it later than 4pm (Paris) will be very late for me
(10pm).
But I guess there are not that many attendees from Asia ;-)

Re: [Esug-list] IWST event date and participant poll
by Vincent Aranega
Hi Martin,
Thanks for your reply, you're right, the event could be done on two days. Let be honest, I did a mistake only considering UTC-7 timezone thinking that the event could start later than 14h Paris (15h or 16h), sorry about that.
I'm not sure that I can modify the online poll, but I will propose a new one with these new options asap. I'm apologize in advance for the multiple emails and polls to answer to.
Thanks for your help,
Vincent

I'd be much more likely to attend if it was done on two days, 17h-19h Paris (8h-10h my local). I do understand that there are likely to be a lot more attendees from Europe than from the west coast of the US, but it would be nice to have some survey options for the later times to judge how much of an inconvenience that would be for the interested parties.

To get a good estimation and ensure that a maximum of persons can enjoy the presentations, we kindly ask you to answer the following poll before the 27th of October:

Re: [Esug-list] IWST event date and participant poll
by Martin McClure
It's good to hear that IWST is happening this year.
I looked at the survey, but didn't send an answer. Any of the three days
works for me, but the hours are a bit tough. They are rather early for
those of us in the UTC-8 timezone. I'd be much more likely to attend if
it was done on two days, 17h-19h Paris (8h-10h my local). I do
understand that there are likely to be a lot more attendees from Europe
than from the west coast of the US, but it would be nice to have some
survey options for the later times to judge how much of an inconvenience
that would be for the interested parties.
Thanks,
-Martin
