UK Smalltalk User Group Meeting - Wednesday, September 29th 2021

by Giovanni Corriga

The next meeting of the UK Smalltalk User Group will be on Wednesday, September 29th. For this month's meeting, we take a look at an example of an application written in Smalltalk. Specifically, one that fits in a cultural tradition that is as old as Smalltalk itself, if not older: that of using computers as tools to teach powerful ideas and to augment thinking. Dr. Geo ( http://drgeo.eu/ ) is an interactive geometry software with programming capabilities in Smalltalk. Dr. Geo aims to be an open, easy to study, modify and extend interactive geometry software. Ten years old kids use Dr. Geo to explore Euclidean geometric sketches; agile kids extend and program it with its embedded dynamic Pharo language and user interface. Hilaire Fernandes started the development of Dr. Geo in 1996. In 1998, he ported it to GNU/Linux at a time where no interactive geometry software existed on this system. It latter became officially a GNU application blessed by Richard Stallman. In the spirit of free software and access to source code, Dr. Geo integrated scripting and programmed figure as well as code introspection from the application itself in an interactive programming environment. Hilaire currently teaches in a junior high school in Geneva where he uses Dr. Geo to teach mathematics (geometry) and basic programming. This will be an online meeting from home. If you'd like to join us, please sign up in advance on the meeting's Meetup page ( https://www.meetup.com/UKSTUG/events/cbklbryccmbdc/ ) to receive the meeting details. Don’t forget to bring your laptop and drinks!

[Pharo-users] Upgrade job

by stephane ducasse

Hi, We are running a seaside app on GemStone 3.4.1 and develop in Pharo 6.1. Is there someone out there who would be interested in taking on the job of upgrading both GemStone, Pharo and Seaside to recent versions? This is in our environment, with numerous databases, testing and dev environments. It would be preferable if the person (or people) understand Monticello, Metacello and Seaside packages that work together. This would be on a contract basis until the project is complete. Please contact me directly if you are interested. Kind regards Otto Behrens Otto Behrens <otto(a)finworks.biz>

Two year engineer or postdoc position on Moose

by stephane ducasse

Hello We have a two year position for an engineer or postdoc position for supporting research activities on top of the Moose open-source platform. The RMOD team is about to transform itself into a new Team called Evref that is a joint team with a part of Berger-Levrault R&D department. Berger-Levrault is the 10th software developer french editor. In the context of the enhancement of the Moose platform, the selected candidate will contribute to one of several of the following topics: - The introduction of the process mechanism in the platform. Indeed, currently, the Moose platform enables the user to build her own metamodels, models, visualisations and so on. However, there is no process mechanism to help more the user in the analysis or the migration using the Moose platform. This work implies for example to define a model of flexible process and an architecture where the developper can easily define her own process from scratch or by adaptation of existing process. - The management of several versions of the same models. Currently, in the Moose platform each version is separated from the others. We have support in previous versions of Moose for example through Orion (ref). This works implies to define how to represent, manipulate and integrate in the Moose platform the management of several versions. It also implies to support the difference between models eventually conforming different metamodels and the evolution from one model to another. - The management of the software system representation through several models conforming different metamodels. All the models represent the same version of the software systems, but from different perspectives. For example, we may have a GUI model, a Database model and a software model. This work implies to be able to specify that a concept in one model is the same in another model. This will then enable us to propose specific analysis explaining how data are used and propagated in the software systems. Or it will also enable us to identify in the code the business concepts and thus to provide a more abstract model. - Decomposition of god classes from their clients. In practice, there exist different types of god classes. The ones that have several responsibilities materialised by a lot of attributes and methods using these attributes. The ones that have several responsibilities materialised by a lot of client classes invoking their classes. We already proposed support to decompose god classes of the first type (ref to ICSME2019). The work here consists to provide support for the second type. It means provide visualisation and possibly a process. There might be eventually other types or classes for which the type is a mixture of these two. It will be necessary to deal with those hybrid classes. - Operationalizable non-functional requirements. Currently, the non-functional requirements (NFR) are used to build a system, but it exists few approaches that enable the developer to identify them from the code by reverse engineering. However, we know that with time, software systems evolve and often without update of the documentation. Thus it is not clear that after time the non-functional requirements are still fulfilled by the software system. This work implies to be able to represent NFR, to support them in the Moose platform and propose NFR aware tools to manipulate the source code. Such tools will include: (1) tools to automatically detect security threats in the source code from software quality issues, (2) tools to support software engineers in understanding NFR (memory consumption, security, efficiency) and (3) tools to transform source code while preserving a NFR (such as security or efficiency). All this work will happen in interaction with Berger-Levrault collaboration. In addition, the possibility to have a permanent research position at the end of this contract with Berger-Levrault is part of the current contract. Salary is competitive and taken from french state grid. UK Smalltalk User Group Meeting - Wednesday, August 25th

by Giovanni Corriga

The next meeting of the UK Smalltalk User Group will be on Wednesday, August 25th. Marcus Denker will talk about Variables in Pharo. We like to say that “Everything is an Object” in Smalltalk. This is true in many cases: Classes, methods, even the execution stack are reflectively available as objects. This talk shows how this idea can be extended to Variables and how Pharo implements first-class Variables for Globals, instance Variables, Class Variables, and even temporary variables. This presentation explores the Variable hierarchy, shows how variables simplify the compiler and how the reflective API provided by variables is used by the debugger. In a hands-on tutorial, we extend the language by defining new kinds of Variables. Marcus ( https://marcusdenker.de/ ) is a permanent researcher at INRIA Lille - Nord Europe ( http://www.inria.fr/lille/ ). Before, he was a postdoc at the PLEIAD lab/DCC University of Chile and the Software Composition Group, University of Bern. His research focuses on reflection and meta-programming for dynamic languages. Marcus Denker received a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Bern/Switzerland in 2008 and a Dipl.-Inform. (MSc) from the University of Karlsruhe/Germany in 2004. He co-founded Zweidenker GmbH ( https://zweidenker.de/ ) in 2009. Given the current COVID-19 restrictions, this will be an online meeting from home. If you'd like to join us, please sign up in advance on the meeting's Meetup page ( https://www.meetup.com/UKSTUG/events/cbklbrycclbhc/ ) to receive the meeting details. UK Smalltalk User Group Meeting - Wednesday 28th July 2021

by Giovanni Corriga

The next meeting of the UK Smalltalk User Group will be on Wednesday, July 30th. Russell Allen will talk to us about Self ( https://selflanguage.org/ ). Dating back to the late 1980s, Self is a prototype based programming language and environment in the broader Smalltalk family. Although Self has always been a niche research system, its influence can still be seen in areas as diverse as the fast VMs of Java and Javascript, in the prototype semantics of Javascript, and in the Morphic user interface used by Squeak, Pharo and Cuis. Russell Allen ( https://twitter.com/russell_allen_ ) has a background in law and computers and first came across Self in the late 1990s. Around 2008 he helped get Self running on Linux x86, set up the Self website and GitHub account, and for the last decade or so he has been helping keep Self as a project alive. In this talk, Russell will demonstrate Self as a running system, including the object semantics, language, and the multi-user Morphic development environment. he’ll talk about the current status of the project and the challenges it faces for the future. Given the current COVID-19 restrictions, this will be an online meeting from home. Please note that the meeting will start later than usual, to accomodate the speaker who will connect from Australia. If you'd like to join us, please sign up in advance on the meeting's Meetup page ( https://www.meetup.com/UKSTUG/events/cbklbrycckblc/ ) to receive the meeting details. Don’t forget to bring your laptop and drinks!

Please up-vote Smalltalk on “Programming-idioms”

by David Mason

Programming idioms is an interesting site that can lead to people programming more idiomatically in various languages. https://programming-idioms.org/cheatsheet/Ruby/Scheme/Haskell You can click on any idiom to see implementations, and all the languages are listed: https://programming-idioms.org/about#about-block-language-coverage I would very much like to have Smalltalk on the list, but the owner of the site only wants to support languages in response to explicit requests. I don’t know how many he is looking for, but if everybody on this list added a comment to the GitHub page: https://github.com/Deleplace/programming-idioms/issues/150 Note that 7 people have asked for V (which actually looks kind of interesting) but the admin hasn’t created it yet… so I’m thinking 20 or more. So please don’t assume someone else has done enough, and go and add your comment. Thanks in advance! ../Dave

UK Smalltalk User Group meeting - Wednesday June 30th

by Giovanni Corriga

The next meeting of the UK Smalltalk User Group will be on Wednesday, June 30th. Hernan Wilkinson ( https://twitter.com/HernanWilkinson ) will talk about his LiveTyping project. Currently, almost all mainstream dynamically typed languages support type annotation a la Strongtalk. Python calls it "type hints", TypeScript is JavaScript+type annotations, PHP calls it "type declarations" and Ruby does it through a tool called Sorbet. All of them annotate the types in the source code and it is the programmer who must write and maintain the annotation. In all cases, it is not mandatory for the system to correctly type check for it to run. LiveTyping ( https://github.com/hernanwilkinson/LiveTyping ) is a type system proposal for Smalltalk, that seeks similar objectives but implemented in a different way. First, it is the environment itself that collects and maintains the types based on the execution of the system, not the programmer. Second, the types are not interleaved in the source code, thus maintaining the syntax and simplicity of the language. And finally, the main objective is not to carry out a static type checking (although it supports it), but to augment the programmers experience increasing the usability of current tools such as searching for senders and implementers, and performing more accurate and safe refactorings. In this talk Hernan will briefly show how LiveTyping is implemented to later concentrate on the improvements made to the tools and the benefits it brings when developing software with Smalltalk. LiveTyping is currently implemented in Cuis Smalltalk ( https://cuis-smalltalk.org/ ) and has been successfully used for the last two years in three different universities in Argentina when teaching Object Oriented Programming and Design. Given the current COVID-19 restrictions, this will be an online meeting from home. If you'd like to join us, please sign up in advance on the meeting's Meetup page ( https://www.meetup.com/UKSTUG/events/cbklbryccjbfc/ ) to receive the meeting details.
