IWST22 — International Workshop on Smalltalk Technologies

by Vincent Aranega

Hi everyone, As you probably know, after complicated years due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the International Workshop on Smalltalk Technologies (IWST) is here again and will be held with this year ESUG conference August 24th to 26th in Novi-Sad, Serbia. Due to authors requests, we moved further the initial deadlines. The 2022 paper review, WiP submission and acceptance processes will proceed with the following deadlines: - Submission deadline: June 1st, 2022 - Notification deadline: July 1st, 2022 - Workshop with ESUG conference: August 24th-26th, 2022. Like last year, we are very proud to announce a Best Paper Award. We thank the Lam Research Corporation for its financial contribution which makes it possible for prizes for the three best papers. We are also happy to announce that accepted papers will be published in the CEUR Workshop Proceedings. IWST has now a significant history and has served for years as a smart playground for young researchers to practice writing articles & presenting results. In parallel, senior researchers take benefit from IWST to expose mature work and propose some retrospective or draw future directions. Mixing these two kinds of contributors makes IWST that attractive. Let’s do the 2022 edition conformed to this legacy! https://esug.github.io/2022-Conference/cfpIWST2022.html Vincent Aranega Loïc Lagadec

UK Smalltalk User Group Meeting - Wednesday, April 27th

by Giovanni Corriga

The next meeting of the UK Smalltalk User Group will be held on Wednesday, April 27th 2022. Newspeak ( https://bracha.org/Site/Newspeak.html ) is a programming system in the Smalltalk tradition, whose current incarnation runs in the web browser. Newspeak is designed to provide the liveness Smalltalkers expect, as well as features atypical of Smalltalk such as modularity, security and good interoperability with the surrounding ecosystem. In this talk, we'll explain how and why Newspeak differs from Smalltalk and demonstrate the Newspeak IDE. Gilad Bracha is the creator of the Newspeak programming language and a well known researcher in the area of object-oriented programming languages. He was awarded the senior Dahl-Nygaard prize in 2017. He is currently a Technical Fellow at F5, and has held positions at Google, SAP Labs, Cadence, and Sun. He has authored or co-authored several books including the Java Language and Virtual Machine Specifications, and the Dart Programming Language. Prior to joining Sun, he worked on Strongtalk, the Animorphic Smalltalk System. He received his B.Sc in Mathematics and Computer Science from Ben Gurion University in Israel and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Utah. This will be an online meeting from home. If you'd like to join us, please sign up in advance on the meeting's Meetup page ( https://www.meetup.com/UKSTUG/events/cbklbrydcgbkc/ ) to receive the meeting details. Don’t forget to bring your laptop and drinks!

UK Smalltalk User Group Meeting - Wednesday, March 30th

by Giovanni Corriga

The next meeting of the UK Smalltalk User Group will be held on Wednesday, March 30th 2022. Come to hear news about Glamorous Toolkit, the moldable development environment. We were busy over the past year: beside everything else, GT also became a multi-language notebook + programmable knowledge management platform. By this we unify the flows of programming, data science and knowledge management. And there might be a couple of other surprises, too. Tudor Gîrba is a software environmentalist and CEO of feenk.com where he works with an amazing team to make the inside of systems explainable. Much of the work is embodied in Glamorous Toolkit (gtoolkit.com) a novel environment that enables Moldable Development. This will be an online meeting from home. If you'd like to join us, please sign up in advance on the meeting's Meetup page to receive the meeting details. Don’t forget to bring your laptop and drinks!
