[ANN] Fuel version 1.5 released

by Martin Dias

I am happy to announce the new release version 1.5. Below is the list of changes. In next days we will update the home page with current state. For example, we have much more to show in benchmarks section. Of course, we have many ideas and new issues to keep working on Fuel. Again, I have to thank ESUG for sponsoring me for Fuel development through the SummerTalk program. Changes on 1.5: - Initialize instances after materialization implementing #fuelAfterMaterialization. - Ignore transient instance variables overriding #fuelIgnoredInstanceVariableNames. - Limit serialization progress bar to update at most once every 250 milliseconds. - Traits are serialized and materialized as a regular objects (http://code.google.com/p/fuel/issues/detail?id=59) - Removed mappers system cache (Eliot). - Many new tests. - Benchmarks: compare Fuel against StOMP, SRP, SIXX, Magma, EsAndEm and Fuel with progress bar. - Benchmarks: new samples, scripts, and CSV exporter. - Benchmarks: measure serialization stream size. - Removed some redundant #fuelAccept:. - Several aesthetic changes in protocols, categories and comments. - Now #materialize answers the materialized root. - Removed special cluster for HashedCollection. Now #rehash is sended via #fuelAfterMaterialization. - MethodContext serialization does not serialize temps (http://code.google.com/p/fuel/issues/detail?id=61) - Classes and Traits now serialize its environment (testCreateWithSmalltalkGlobalsEnvironment). - Fixed serialization of non-octet characters (testCharacter). - Fixed a bug serializing the system dictionary. FLWellKnownObjectsCluster handles it. (testSmalltalkGlobals). - Fixed a bug serializing class variables (testClassVariable). - Fixed a bug when serializing a collection with size greater than 1^16 with repeated elements inside. - Fixed testTwoCompiledMethodsReferencingSameClassVariable. - Optimization: instanceIndexes are directly created with the exact size (Henrik).

[ANN] humane-assessment.com

by Tudor Girba

Hi, I am happy to announce the new home for humane assessment: http://humane-assessment.com Humane assessment is a new software engineering method for making the assessment of software systems practical and manageable. This is made possible by the Moose analysis platform. The core idea is quite simple: build custom analysis tools to analyze the contextual complexity of your software systems so that you can make better decisions. By decisions I mean anything that has to do with the system: it can be technical (such as, is this concept well encapsulated?, or is my component used the right way?), or it can be broad and strategic (such as, should I refactor my system?). To make it practical we need to be able to craft tools (sometimes complex tools) fast. This is made feasible by Moose, and in turn, Moose achieves this because of Smalltalk. The method also covers process and organization-related problems. If you wish, humane assessment is the coat that can place Moose and Smalltalk within any development team. If you want to promote Smalltalk, perhaps you might want to use this path. I would be happy to provide more information, support and even materials. Cheers, Doru -- www.tudorgirba.com "The coherence of a trip is given by the clearness of the goal."

ESUG 2011 Innovation Technology Awards reminder

by Jordi Delgado

Hi, Just a reminder: ESUG 2011 Innovation Technology Awards (http://esug.org/Conferences/2011/InnovationTechnologyAwards) We are proud to announce the 8th Innovation Technology Awards. Have you written innovative Smalltalk? The developers of any Smalltalk-based software can enter by submitting a 3-5min video of their software. Entrants demo their systems in a session at the end of Monday August 22nd 2011, after which the conference attendees vote. (A vote consists in providing a sorted list of 3 preferred pieces of software.) The top 3 teams with the most innovative software will receive, respectively, 500 Euros, 300 Euros and 200 Euros. The results are announced in the Awards ceremony that is held during the social event. Applicants should provide the following information on the conference registration server. Once you have registered your personal info, an "Awards" menu allows submitting your software. You can provide this information when you first register, or login again later and update your details. Info to provide: Name of the software Licence information (free, or shareware, or a commercial) Name of the Smalltalk dialect used Names, Affiliation and Country of developers URL for a video (3-5 min) showing a screencast / demo of the software URL for downloading the software or at least a runnable demo Deadline: 30th of july Any Smalltalker can apply (students, companies, ...). The presented piece of code/software should be written in Smalltalk or directly support Smalltalk (e.g. Smalltalk VM). All Smalltalk dialects are accepted. The applicant should own the copyright/copyleft of presented code or at least be the official representative of the copyright/copyleft owner. The software should be available on-line for evaluation (time-limited evaluation version, demo version, free for non-commercial use ...). Bests, Jordi

Re: [Esug-list] About ESUG program

by stephane ducasse

Hi guys So I was confused my agenda was that I wanted to have the full schedule for the 21 of June. Now we indicated 1st of July but I think that this is too late for having a first schedule and the list of talks. So we will continue to accept talks as they come and we may reject late proposal. Sorry for the mess. About ESUG program

by Stéphane Ducasse

Hi guys I will simply not consider in the program any talk that does not have sent me a title, abstract and bio. So please have a look at: http://www.esug.org/wiki/pier/Conferences/2011/Schedule-And-Talks/ - I'm updating the list with serge and next year the process will be totally changed because it cannot continue like that or I stop organizing the conference. Simple isn't. If you do not have 10 min for ESUG why should I spend days! By tuesday, you are out if we did not get your information. I'm sorry but I have something else to do than sending emails to get information. Pass the information around because I started to get really annoyed. Stef
