[ANN] SmallHarbour ALPHA release

by laurent laffont

Hi, We are pleased to announce the first version of SmallHarbour. SmallHarbour is a public fork of SeasideHosting, running on top of Pharo, Seaside and Cog - driven by Romain Verduci and Laurent Laffont for ESUG SummerTalk 2011. The main goals are: - people should be able to (easily) setup their own web application deployment platform - provide a public service for hosting web applications. - be able to setup a web application without Smalltalk knowledge in one click. Actually SmallHarbour support Pharo and Seaside, but we expect to support Iliad and AidaWeb framework soon. When an account is created, you can go in Home and click on "Create blog" to deploy a Pier image. More templates to come. The alpha public server is at: http://www.alpha.smallharbour.org. Feel free to upload images. BE CAREFUL: that may be deleted / lost without warning. Do not put sensible informations. To setup your own SmallHarbour, - read documentation at http://project.alpha.smallharbour.org/seaside/pier/Documentation - see screencast http://project.alpha.smallharbour.org/seaside/pier/blog/2011-08-11 Feedback is welcome. We still need to find bugs, fix them and learn. Romain will present SmallHarbour at ESUG. Thanks ESUG, Adrian and Netstyle for sharing code, Mariano for help, Claire and Patrick who are working on visual identity. Cheers, Laurent Laffont - @lolgzs <http://twitter.com/#!/lolgzs> Pharo Smalltalk Screencasts: http://www.pharocasts.com/ Blog: http://magaloma.blogspot.com/ Developer group: http://cara74.seasidehosting.st

Smalltalk lecture Saturday 20th of August at ESUG

by Stéphane Ducasse

Hi Friends please distribute that widely I will give a free lecture Discovering Smalltalk Smalltalk is a pure and elegant object language. This lectures will cover the fundamental aspects of Smalltalk: syntax, semantics, and key aspects of the system. Doing so we will also revise the real semantics of self/super. We will show the power of polymorphism in action by simply learning from the system. Finally we will go into more design aspect again based on the systems. As a bonus we will start the lecture with a 15 min presentation of Seaside a powerful web framework for dynamic web application. This lecture may be followed by a lecture on more advanced object-oriented design: law of demeter, encapsulation, multiple interface of classes, composition vs. inheritance Starting time: 9h30 Closing: 16h00 Location: http://www.esug.org/wiki/pier/Conferences/2011/The-Venue-in-Edinburgh Bio: He is expert in object-oriented language design, dynamic languages, reflective programming, language semantics as well as reengineering, program analysis, visualizations, software metrics. Recently he worked on traits, composable method groups, and this work got some impact. Traits have been introduced AmbiantTalk, Pharo, Perl-6, PHP 5.4 and Squeak. They influenced Scala and Fortress SUN Microsystems. Stephane is one of the developer of Pharo (http://www.pharo.project.org/) an open-source language inspired by Smalltalk. He is one of the core developer of Moose, an open-source reengineering environment (http://moose.unibe.ch/) He is the president of the European Smalltalk User Group and organize a yearly international conference on Smalltalk. He wrote a couple of fun books to teach programming and other serious topics such as dynamic web development (http://book.seaside.st) Stef

PhD offer - Brest france

by Loic Lagadec

Dear All, We are looking for a top candidate to join our research group as a PhD student. We have one opening in the area of Smalltalk-based Electronic Design Automation. Please could you broadcast to any interested student. The position is to be filled as soon as possible. The project starts on 1st october 2011. Kind Regards, LoIc Lagadec ARDyT - Fault tolerant dynamically reconfigurable architecture Position type: PhD Student Functional area: Brest, France Research theme: Smalltalk, Reconfigurable architecture, innovative toolkit design Project: ARDyT Contact: loic.lagadec(a)univ-brest.fr Title: Instrospection plan compliant EDA toolset Reconfigurable computing (eg. FPGAs) combines the flexibility of software with the high performances of hardware. This comes from the on-demand metamorphosis of the hardware - at runtime - by "loading" a new circuit on the reconfigurable fabric, while this technology also supports extreme optimizations, by allowing drastic changes to the datapath itself, in addition to tailoring the control flow as traditionaly met in microprocessors. While improving performances has been the key issue for years, very few efforts have been reported in debug automation. Debuging requires introspection capabilities, controlability and fast-changes support. HLS (High Level Synthesis) tools allow to compile high-level (C like) languages to netlist (electronic level), hence guarantee fast changes but controlability and instrospection are still very limited. In the scope of the ARDyT project (supported by the French National Research Agency), some evolutions will be carried out over a classical FPGA such as embedding extra resources that will offer some introspection capabilities. The PhD thesis will contribute to refactor/re-design an existing smalltalk based toolset in order to take into account these extra resources hence new paradigms such as to combine the computation plan and the instrospection plan of the proposed architecture. In addition, debug controllers will be made available on-demand within the netlist of the application. This offers new exciting perspectives, in a scope of domain space exploration (DSE). A model oriented approach will be considered to ensure the durability of the resulting software and of its design method. This PhD will be co-supervised by the Lab-STICC MOCS and IRISA.

Hmm, this is true :-( Maybe somebody changed that at some point for performance reasons? Private projects are definitely not visible in the original implementation ( source.lukas-renggli.ch has many private projects that don't show up). Re: [Esug-list] [ANN] LatAm Squeaksource Mirror

by Johan Fabry

To clarify: - the mirror is offline. I have no control over scg.unibe.ch so I cannot take the list offline. :-( - source code of private projects was never mirrored. The last in more detail: I manually ran over the list looking for projects that are not visible in the Squeaksource project list page. If the 'Global' config setting for the project was set to 'No Access' the mirror does *NOT* have the .mcf for these packages. So the code of private projects remained private. http://scg.unibe.ch/download/SSProjectList/projectList.txt is still there. It exposes the name, and sub sequentially the title and front-page of private projects.
