Phratch Website + version 3.0 in dev

by jannik laval

Dear all, I am pleased to announce Phratch website: www.phratch.com Thanks to the support of ESUG, it is possible to make visible this wonderful project. For now, what is available on the site: - a presentation of Phratch (you can refer to it now) - installation files, there is a portable version for Windows, Linux, MacOS. - tutorials - block documentation: generated from a Phratch image ! - Some elements for Jetstorm (a lot of new articles will come soon) - a category with news Now about the versions, I am developing the version 3.0 Why this number ? Why a third version in one year of work ? It is clear that a lot of work is already done. Each version represents strong changes in the architecture. - version 1.0 is the port of Scratch + BYOB + Panther in Pharo. It is working but not extendable. - version 2.0 makes Phratch really extendable. We can develop our own block for everything in Pharo. I also make Phratch more modular with the use of Pragmas for some menus, declaration of blocks... It is available only in Pharo 3.0. There are some languages available, I hope more people can translate in other languages (http://www.phratch.com/archives/612) - version 3.0 is the version in development. What is new here: Before this version Phratch was really slow. I am cleaning the code, and now it begins to be fast, really fast ! We also begun to write tests. I am really happy to have the support of ESUG and Pharo. Thanks to the community to make Pharo as usable as it it, it makes our dreams possible. Cheers, -- ~~Jannik Laval~~ École des Mines de Douai Enseignant-chercheur http://www.jannik-laval.eu http://car.mines-douai.fr/

======================================================== I apologize in advance if you receive multiple copies of this CFP. ======================================================== Dear IWST participants, During the discussion at IWST 2013 Conference, at Annecy, France, we decided to send a reminder to all potential authors for IWST 2014. Here it is ! We want to encourage you to submit one or more papers. The goals of the workshop is to create a forum around advances or experience in Smalltalk and to trigger discussions and exchanges of ideas. The topics of your paper can be on all aspect of Smalltalk, theoretical as well as practical. Participants are invited to submit research articles or industrial papers. This year we want to open two different tracks: one research track and one industrial track with less scientific constraints. We expect papers of three kinds: - Short position papers describing emerging ideas - Long research papers with deeper description of experiments and of research results. - Industrial papers with presentation of real and innovative Smalltalk applications; this kind of paper should enlighten why Smalltalk is really appropriate for your application. We will not enforce any length restriction. The deadline is not fixed for now. Last year, it was June 22. So please, pay attention to this date. Both submissions and final papers must be prepared using the ACM SIGPLAN 10 point format. Templates for Word and LaTeX are available at http://www.acm.org/sigs/sigplan/authorInformation.htm. Other information will come with the official call of paper. Alain et Jannik -- ~~Jannik Laval~~ École des Mines de Douai Enseignant-chercheur http://www.jannik-laval.eu http://car.mines-douai.fr/

Re: [Esug-list] Dumb question regarding Pharo

by Clément Bera

Hello, You definitely want to have a look at Spec. The idea is that at some point a spec-based UI will be both compatible with Morphic and Mars (Mars is the native window pharo framework working right now with cocoa and gtk, winform is not supported (yet)). There's also a tool named UIPainter to create a UI with drag and drop as you are used to. However, it is a work in progress and currently I make my UI by hand with Spec, without using a drag and drop ui builder, and I don't use native windows ... If you want to make professional application with Spec you would need to invest a bit of time but it's doable. 2014-02-27 18:54 GMT+01:00 Johan Fabry <jfabry(a)dcc.uchile.cl>: > Hi David, > > you would want to look at Spec. Hi David, you would want to look at Spec. The most recent documentation is in the Pharo For The Enterprise book, the sources of which you can find here: https://github.com/SquareBracketAssociates/PharoForTheEnterprise-english I advise to read the latest build of the chapter on Spec, which can be found here: https://ci.inria.fr/pharo-contribution/job/PharoForTheEnterprise/lastSucces… Greetings, On Feb 27, 2014, at 2:43 PM, David Pennington <david(a)totallyobjects.com> wrote: > I have just posted on the new Pharo business site expressing a hope that I can convert some of my VA Smalltalk stuff to Pharo. Dumb question regarding Pharo

by David Pennington

I have just posted on the new Pharo business site expressing a hope that I can convert some of my VA Smalltalk stuff to Pharo. However, I could do with a pointer as to how to create a window and add elements. I have been using the standard VA Window creation - effectively drag and drop - so I am not used to hand creating. Could anyone point me at a primer for this? I have googled but only found little snippets. Sorry for my incompetence (after 24 years of Smalltalk development :-) David Totally Objects Message sent using Winmail Mail Server

[CFP] Dyla'14, Workshop on Dynamic Languages and Applications, at PLDI, Edinburgh

by Damien Cassou

[CFP] Dyla'14, Workshop on Dynamic Languages and Applications, at PLDI, Edinburgh - What: 8th Workshop on Dynamic Languages and Applications - Where: Co-located with PLDI'14, Edinburgh, UK - When: June 12th Sponsored by ACM SIGPLAN Submission deadline: March 15th More info on the website: http://www.lifl.fr/dyla14/ Dyla is a place where developers and researchers can discuss new advances in the design, implementation and application of dynamically-typed languages. The expected audience of this workshop includes practitioners and researchers sharing the same interest in dynamically-typed languages. Lua, Python, Ruby, JavaScript and others are gaining a significant popularity both in industry and academia. Nevertheless, each community has the tendency to only look at what it produces. Broadening the scope of each community is the goal of the workshop. To achieve this goal Dyla's program and organization committees are composed of leading persons from many such languages. Topics -- - live programming - programming language extensions - programming environment extensions - domain-specific languages & tooling - executing environments - static & dynamic analyses - meta-object protocols - optional type-checking - reverse engineering - testing environments Organizing committee: -- - Damien Cassou, University of Lille 1, FR - Carl Friedrich Bolz, King's College London, GB - Johan Andersson, Burtcorp in Gothenburg, SE - Roberto Ierusalimschy, Catholic Univ. in Rio de Janeiro, BR - Tom Van Cutsem, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, BE Program committee: -- - Anne Etien, University Lille 1, France - David Schneider, Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf, DE - Didier Verna, EPITA/LRDE, France - Edd Barrett, Department of Informatics, King's College London, GB - Joe Gibbs Politz, Brown University, USA - Peng Wu, IBM T.J. Watson Research Center, USA - Tim Felgentreff, Hasso-Plattner-Institut, DE - T. Stephen Strickland, University of Maryland, US - Yoshiki Ohshima, Viewpoints Research Institute, USA - Zachary P. Beane, Portland, USA - the 5 workshop organizers Abstract: -- Java and C# have been a major influence in the adoption of object-oriented language characteristics: academic features like interfaces, garbage collection, and meta-programming became technologies generally accepted by the industry. However, with the adoption of these languages, their limitations became apparent, as testified by industry reactions: invokedynamic has been included in the latest Java virtual machine release; the dynamic language runtime (DLR) is gaining popularity; C# adopted dynamic as a valid static type. Researchers and practitioners struggle with static type systems, overly complex abstract grammars, simplistic concurrency mechanisms, limited reflection capabilities, and the absence of higher-order language constructs such as delegation, closures, and continuations. Dynamic languages such as Ruby, Python, JavaScript and Lua are a step forward in addressing these problems and are getting more and more popular. To make these languages mainstream, practitioners have to look back and pick mechanisms up in existing dynamic languages such as Lisp, Scheme, Smalltalk and Self. The goal of this workshop is to act as a forum where practitioners can discuss new advances in the design, implementation and application of dynamically-typed languages that, sometimes radically, diverge from the statically typed class-based mainstream. Another objective is to discuss new as well as older "forgotten" languages and features in this context. Format and Submission Information -- The workshop will have a demo-oriented style. The idea is to allow participants to demonstrate new and interesting features and discuss what they feel is relevant for the dynamic-language community. To participate in the workshop, you can either - submit (before March 15th 2014) an article (ACM Tighter Alternate style) describing your presentation and/or tool. Your article, which must include from 2 to 15 pages, will be carefully reviewed by the program committee. If accepted, your article will be presented during the workshop and be published to the ACM Digital Library (at your option) and the workshop's web site. Please submit to http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=dyla14. - or give a 10-minute lightning demo of your work. A dedicated session will be allocated for this, provided there is ample time available. In this case, send us the title of your demo. A session on pair programming is also planned. People will then get a chance to share their technologies by interacting with other participants.

Pharo-Business: a new mailing-list

by Stéphane Ducasse

Dear Pharoers and Smalltalkers from all over the world we would really like to push business in our community and we believe that it is important to create a community around business questions. We created a new mailing-list http://lists.pharo.org/mailman/listinfo/pharo-business_lists.pharo.org The idea is to identify - potential market - missing technical solutions that we could build together. - share technical assets from a business perspective (which frameworks for what). We hope that you will like the idea and that more business can emerge.
