[ANN] Live Robot Programming

by Johan Fabry

Hi all, it’s with great joy that I can announce the project that my PhD student Miguel and I have been working on recently: Live Robot Programming, or LRP for short. LRP is a live programming language designed for the creation of the behavior layer of robots. It is fundamentally a nested state machine language built with robotics applications in mind, but it is not bound to a specific robot middleware, API or OS. Have a look at one minute of LRP programming to get an idea of what it is like: http://youtu.be/4Ma8ZapBUqA Live programming is fun, and live robot programming even more so, as it brings all the advantages of live programming to programming a robot. You get direct manipulation of a running robot, and that’s just cool beyond words. As an example of LRP on a robot, this guy was programmed in LRP: http://youtu.be/4Ma8ZapBUqA Note that you can use LRP ‘just’ for live programming nested state machines as well. More information on LRP is available on its website: http://pleiad.cl/LRP where you can also find download instructions. LRP is implemented in Pharo, and uses Roassal2 for the visualization of its state machines. We currently can steer the Lego Mindstorms EV3 and ROS robots, thanks to a small layer on top of the cool Pharo support that Jannik, Luc, Santiago and Noury are implementing at Douai. I am going to look into support for the Parrot AR.Drone 2.0esug in a few weeks. Miguel will be at ESUG next week (I cannot make it), and has a talk at the IWST workshop about LRP, in the morning session. I am sure that he will also be happy to give demos of LRP if you ask him to (but sadly without a robot). All feedback is welcome, and … have fun! ---> Save our in-boxes! http://emailcharter.org <--- Johan Fabry - http://pleiad.cl/~jfabry PLEIAD lab - Computer Science Department (DCC) - University of Chile

Award.... new process :)

by Stéphane Ducasse

Hi smalltalkers for the awards it seems that the registration server has still a problem. I suggest that you prepare your video and that you send a title and a little description of your project as a reply to this mail. We will manage it differently but we will do this great competition. Stef

Sounds good, Thanks for the instructions Niall, they are crystal clear. It will be a good pretext to play with the latest VW ;) On Wed, Aug 13, 2014 at 10:05 PM, Niall Ross <nfr(a)bigwig.net> wrote: > Dear François, > > > > There is a Glorp tutorial scheduled at 2pm on Monday. Dear François, > There is a Glorp tutorial scheduled at 2pm on Monday. The description > says that we attendants should have a Glorp Ready setup on their laptop. > Is there any planned session to get this setup working? I trust the instructions below will be easy to follow. However, also: 1) I will be at Camp Smalltalk on Saturday and Sunday. I will help anyone there who asks to get set up. 2) I'll arrange that people registering on Monday have a way to tell me if they are attending the tutorial and are having problems getting set up. I'll talk to them in the morning coffee break. > We need a VW image It keeps things simple if attenders have the same set up as the presenter. Visit http://www.cincomsmalltalk.com/ to download the VisualWorks 7.10.1 personal use version (You won't be thrown out if you turn up with another dialect and its latest Glorp. :-) Just be aware it's "caveat emptor" if any hiccough I can't reproduce in my image hits you. :-) ) > A stock PostgreSQL 9.3 is enough as well? The same point about the advantage of using the same thing as the presenter applies to your choice of database. - Visiting www.postgresql.org and installing the latest 9.3 is fine. - Any older Postgres 9.* - and, I would expect 8.* - should work OK. - Any other database that Glorp supports _should_ work OK. "SQL is a standard - so it differs everywhere", Alan Knight. :-) > with Glorp loaded. Any special steps to do that? Load Glorp and GlorpTest. (These are parcels in your VisualWorks installation. Components of the same name exist in other dialects.) - Look at the 'data' protocol on the class side of GlorpDatabaseLoginResource. - Choose a method that matches your database platform. - Edit it to connect to some (empty or unimportant) test database on your machine. - Execute the method; check the value of DefaultLogin is what you expect. - Run the GlorpTest SUnit tests. On Postgres and VisualWorks, you should see all tests run green. (On some other databases and/or dialects, some failures are expected; I will bring test data so you can verify your installation is behaving correctly.) If you get many failures, check simple things like your typing of the values in DefaultLogin, or the parameters of your database installation. HTH Niall Ross

Preparing Glorp Tutorial at ESUG 2014

by François Stephany

Hi, There is a Glorp tutorial scheduled at 2pm on Monday. The description says that we attendants should have a Glorp Ready setup on their laptop. Is there any planned session to get this setup working? If I understand well, we need a VW image with Glorp loaded. Any special steps to do that? A stock PostgreSQL 9.3 is enough as well? Cheers, Francois

Submission problems fixed - ESUG 2014 REMINDER: 11th Innovation Technology Awards

by Jordi Delgado

We're sorry but we realized that there was a misconfiguration that prevented the submission of award candidates. It has been fixed and now it works fine. ESUG 2014 REMINDER: 11th Innovation Technology Awards http://www.esug.org/Conferences/2014/Innovation-Technology-Awards Have you written innovative Smalltalk? The developers of any Smalltalk-based software can enter by submitting a 3-5min video of their software. Entrants demo their systems in a session at the end of Monday August 18th 2014, after which the conference attendees vote. (A vote consists in providing a sorted list of 3 preferred pieces of software.) The top 3 teams with the most innovative software will receive, respectively, 500 Euros, 300 Euros and 200 Euros. The results are announced in the Awards ceremony that is held during the social event. Applicants should provide the following information on the conference registration server. Once you have registered your personal info, an 'Awards' menu allows submitting your software. You can provide this information when you first register, or login again later and update your details. The registration server will open soon. You can start preparing your software right now though. Info to provide: Name of the software Licence information (free, shareware, or commercial) Name of the Smalltalk dialect used Name, Affiliation and Country of developers Besides, it would be great if the submission could include: URL for a video (3-5 min) showing a screencast / demo of the software URL for downloading the software or at least a runnable demo Deadline: *August 15th* Any Smalltalker can apply (students, companies, ...). The presented piece of code/software should be written in Smalltalk or directly support Smalltalk (e.g. Smalltalk VM). All Smalltalk dialects are accepted. The applicant should be "strongly related" to the presented code, be it as an author, as owner of the copyright/copyleft, or as an official representative of the copyright/copyleft owner. Bests Jordi
