Call for Papers *** Workshop on Context-oriented Programming (COP) 2016 *** July 19 (Tue), 2016 Co-located with ECOOP 2016 in Rome http://2016.ecoop.org/track/COP-2016 === Introduction === Context information plays an increasingly important role in our information-centric world. Software systems must adapt to changing contexts over time, and must change even while they are running. Unfortunately, mainstream programming languages and development environments do not support this kind of dynamic change very well, leading developers to implementing complex designs to anticipate various dimensions of variability. Context-oriented Programming (COP) directly supports variability depending on a wide range of dynamic attributes. In effect, it should be possible to dispatch run-time behavior on any property of the execution context. By now, several researchers have been working on notions approaching that idea, and implementations ranging from first prototypes to mature platform extensions used in commercial deployments have illustrated how multidimensional dispatch can indeed be supported effectively to achieve expressive run-time variation in behavior. === Topics === The previous editions of this workshop (ECOOP 2009–2015) have shown to be well-received. The goal of the 8th Workshop on Context-oriented Programming (COP-16) is to further establish context orientation as a common thread to language design, application development, and system support. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: - Interesting application domains and scenarios - Programming language abstractions for Context-oriented Programming (e.g. dynamic scoping, roles, traits, prototype-based extensions) - Theoretical foundations for Context-oriented Programming (e.g. semantics, type systems) - Configuration languages (e.g. feature description interpreters, transformational approaches) - Interaction between non-functional programming concerns and Context-oriented Programming (e.g. security, persistence, concurrency, distribution). - Interaction with other paradigms: event-based and reactive programming, object-oriented programming. - Modularization approaches for Context-oriented Programming (e.g. aspects, modules, layers, plugins). - Guidelines to include Context-oriented Programming in programs (e.g. best practices, patterns) - Runtime support for Context-oriented Programming (e.g. reflection, dynamic binding) - Implementation issues such as optimization, VM support, JIT compilation etc. for Context-oriented Programming - Tool support (e.g. design tools, IDEs, debuggers). === Submissions === COP invites submissions of high-quality papers reporting original research, or describing innovative contributions to, or experience with Context-oriented Programming, its implementation, and application. Papers that depart significantly from established ideas and practices are particularly welcome. Submissions must not have been published previously and must not be under review for any another refereed event or publication. The program committee will evaluate each contributed paper based on its relevance, significance, clarity, and originality. Accepted papers will be published in the ACM Digital Library. Some sort of requirements and specification including performance goals and perhaps a platform and programming language. A group of developers head into a vast workroom. <crossfade to developers exiting the vast workroom> The Programming Experience Workshop is about what happens in that room when one or a couple of programmers sit down in front of computers and produce code, especially when it's exploratory programming. Do they create text that is transformed into running behavior (the old way), or do they operate on behavior directly ("liveness"); are they exploring the live domain to understand the true nature of the requirements; are they like authors creating new worlds; does visualization matter; is the experience immediate, immersive, vivid and continuous; do fluency, literacy, and learning matter; do they build tools, meta-tools; are they creating languages to express new concepts quickly and easily; and curiously, is joy relevant to the experience? Correctness, performance, standard tools, foundations, and text-as-program are important traditional research areas, but the experience of programming and how to improve and evolve it are the focus of this workshop. === Submissions === Submissions are solicited for Programming Experience 2016 (PX/16). The thrust of the workshop is to explore the human experience of programming—what it feels like to program, or more accurately, what it should feel like. The technical topics include exploratory programming, live programming, authoring, representation of active content, visualization, navigation, modularity mechanisms, immediacy, literacy, fluency, learning, tool building, and language engineering. Submissions by academics, professional programmers, and non-professional programmer are welcome. Submissions can be in any form and format, including but not limited to papers, presentations, demos, videos, panels, debates, essays, writers' workshops, and art. Presentation slots will be between 30 minutes and one hour, depending on quality, form, and relevance to the workshop. Submissions directed toward publication should be so marked, and the program committee will engage in peer review for all such papers. Video publication will be arranged. The topics of your paper can be on all aspect of Smalltalk, theoretical as well as practical. Participants are invited to submit research articles or industrial papers. This year we want to open two different tracks: one research track and one industrial track with less scientific constraints. We expect papers of three kinds: Short position papers describing emerging ideas Long research papers with deeper description of experiments and of research results. Industrial papers with presentation of real and innovative Smalltalk applications; this kind of paper should enlighten why Smalltalk is really appropriate for your application. Why you should follow the Pharo mooc :)

Dear ESUGers and others I really encourage you to register and follow the Pharo Mooc. https://www.fun-mooc.fr/courses/inria/41010/session01/about?platform=hootsu… I do not imagine that you will learn something about our lovely language but the idea behind the mooc is to offer for free all the mooc resources - videos (around 80 videos including lectures) - slides (61 lectures) - exercises - quiz - miniprojects to the community to push people to give lectures. So following the mooc can you you arguments to push people to teach Smalltalk. For your information, the building of this mooc has been estimated to 180 K Euros. In addition, the number of participants to the mooc is a criteria of success and there too we are watched. There is a python mooc of course. PDF4Smalltalk 1.4 release

Dear all, Version 1.4 of the PDF library PDF4Smalltalk has been released to the public store (with MIT licence). The library now supports Smalltalk images (pictures) to be inserted into PDFs. Any Smalltalk image can be added to a PDF (with masks and alpha transparency). The attachment is a demo page as a teaser. The implementation is supposed to be complete in the sense that ALL Smalltalk images should be convertible to PDF. With a drawback: due to missing image compression algorithms (JPEG, JBIG2 and others), not the most space saving representation is used (only Zip compression). Also, not all images found in PDFs can be converted to Smalltalk images. This is again due to missing image compression filters and, for PDF images with other color spaces than /DeviceRGB and /DeviceGray, due to missing color conversion methods. The feature is well tested and reasonable efficient. But, of course, there will be bugs I don’t know about. Please, if you see something fishy, tell me and I’ll fix it. The library works in all VisualWorks versions from 7.10 up (Jenkins tested). Is there anyone who uses the library with previous versions of VisualWorks?
