Call for Hosts: ESUG 2028, 2029 and 2030

by Marcus Denker

Dear Smalltalk enthusiasts, With ESUG 2027 in Brussels confirmed well ahead of time, we would like to keep up this new tradition of announcing each conference early. To make that possible, we are already looking for hosts for the coming years: - ESUG 2028 - ESUG 2029 - ESUG 2030 Since 1993, the ESUG conference has travelled across Europe, hosted by universities, companies and local Smalltalk groups. Each edition has been shaped by its local organizers, and many of our best memories come from discovering a new city together. Hosting ESUG means bringing the Smalltalk community to your place for about a week at the beginning of July: the isLoop Summer School, IWST and the ESUG conference itself. You provide the venue and local organization; the ESUG board supports you throughout, with experience from past editions, help with the program, registration and budget, and continuity from one year to the next. Knowing the hosts several years in advance lets us announce dates and venues early, gives attendees and sponsors time to plan, and makes things easier for everyone involved. If you, your university, your company or your local user group would be interested in hosting one of these editions, or if you would simply like to know more about what is involved, please get in touch with the ESUG board at esug-planning(a)esug.org We would be happy to hear from you by March 01, 2027, the earlier the better of course. We look forward to discovering where the Smalltalk community will meet in 2028, 2029 and 2030! Best regards, The ESUG Board

UKSTUG Meeting: Norbert Hartl - The ins and outs and ups and downs of deployed Smalltalk images - 30 September 2026

by UK Smalltalk

Deploying a Smalltalk image as a service raises a new class of questions, and answering requests is the least of them. What are the ins and outs of a running image — what do you put in, what does it report back out? And what about its ups and downs, now that staying up is the job? Canopy ( https://github.com/ApptiveGrid/Canopy ) , grown out of running ApptiveGrid ( https://www.apptivegrid.de/en/ ) in production, is one way to look at those differently: two things you normally maintain separately turn out to be the same thing. Along the way we work out what actually matters when you have to keep a service running — and what follows from that is the rest of the talk. Norbert Hartl ( https://github.com/noha ) is an experienced software engineer and entrepreneur with a strong track record of delivering business projects and developing key libraries and frameworks. As the co-founder of ApptiveGrid he focuses on creating efficient, zero-dependency software solutions that drive business innovation and streamline operations. This will be an online meeting. If you'd like to join us, please sign up in advance on the meeting's Meetup page ( https://www.meetup.com/ukstug/events/316700585/ ) to receive the meeting details.

UKSTUG Meeting - Squeak 6.1 launch party! - 2 September 2026

by UK Smalltalk

Join us for this special off-cycle event to celebrate the new release of Squeak 6.1! More than four years in the making, the new release brings a new tree browser, the return of "The Worlds of Squeak" from 2004, and many other new features and improvements across the system. Rather than a regular presentation, this will be an informal online release party. We'll take a tour through some of the highlights of 6.1, hear from Squeak contributors about their favorite changes, and leave plenty of room to chat about the present, past, and future of Squeak. Also, we'd love to see what YOU are doing with Squeak! If you want, bring a short demo along (max. 5 min) and show us your work. New tools, shaky experiments, and works in progress are all welcome. Come celebrate the release, meet fellow Squeakers, and see what's new in the world of Squeak! Original release announcement on squeak-dev: https://lists.squeakfoundation.org/archives/list/squeak-dev@lists.squeakfou… About Squeak: Squeak is the direct descendant of Smalltalk-80 and currently 29 years old. It features the Morphic framework for interactive GUI development, Etoys, and a rich set of tools for object-oriented, exploratory programming. Squeak runs on the OpenSmalltalk VM, with JIT compilation for fast execution and support for all major platforms. Squeak is being used and developed for education, research, games, applications, and exploring what a live Smalltalk system can be. This will be an online meeting. If you'd like to join us, please sign up in advance on the meeting's Meetup page ( https://www.meetup.com/ukstug/events/316112369/ ) to receive the meeting details.

UKSTUG Meeting: David Long - Recovering the Design of Existing Software: SecureCell, SageTea and the Road Back to Pharo - 26 August 2026

by UK Smalltalk

Much of today's software is locked inside large, evolving code bases where the original design has gradually been lost. What if we could automatically recover that design, represent it using a language-independent application model, and then allow a modern runtime to render, evolve and maintain the application independently of its original implementation language? This talk presents that vision through SecureCell, a secure communications appliance developed by XTC Mobile for organizations that require privacy, security and local control. David Long will demonstrate how Graphify analyzes existing applications to recover their architectural structure, how this information is transformed into the SageTea Canonical Application Model, and how the runtime can automatically generate user interfaces, navigation and application behavior from that model. Rather than treating software as language-specific source code, the emphasis is on recovering and preserving the application's semantic design. Finally, David will discuss why this architectural approach naturally leads back to Pharo Smalltalk, and why we believe Smalltalk remains an ideal environment for building the next generation of language-independent development tools and self-hosting runtime systems. The session will include a live demonstration of SecureCell and an overview of the current work on the Eclipse SageTea Runtime. David Long is the creator of the Eclipse SageTea project and CEO of XTC Mobile, where he leads the development of secure mobile communications solutions for government, defence, telecommunications carriers and regulated enterprises. A Smalltalk developer for more than thirty years, David is currently developing the next generation of the Eclipse SageTea Runtime—an open-source platform for language-independent application modeling, AI-assisted software modernization and long-term software evolution. His current work focuses on Graphify, canonical application models, runtime architecture and bringing the SageTea Runtime to Pharo Smalltalk. This will be an online meeting. If you'd like to join us, please sign up in advance on the meeting's Meetup page ( https://www.meetup.com/ukstug/events/313860371/ ) to receive the meeting details
