[JOB][PhD] Infrastructure and Language Kernels for IoT Systems

The RMOD team of INRIA Lille and the CAR theme of IMT Lille Douai have an open position for a PhD student on Infrastructure and language kernels for IoT Systems.
Description
==========
Over the last years, the RMOD team of INRIA Lille and the CAR theme of IMT Lille Douai have been working together on creating tiny language core. For example, Guillermo Polito demonstrated in his PhD a fully reflective kernel that fits into 80 kb of memory and that it is possible to have hyper specialized kernels down to 11 kb. We have also worked on remote debugging (PhD of N. Papoulias) and dynamic code updates (PhD of P. Tesone) of such kernels. All of these works are prototyped in Pharo. More recently, RMOD have been working on advanced probes mechanisms (M. Denker) and a solid remote debugging infrastructure (D. Kudriashov). The goal of this PhD is to revisit the architecture around such mini-kernels for building IoT applications.
The plan is to:
=============
• improve the tools to edit, compile, debug, deploy and update such kernels on IoT devices. Learn how to debug remotely and dynamically update such IoT systems using the TelePharo/PharoThings environment. This task will be in cooperation with M. Denker and D. Kudriashov on remote debugging for IoT and G. Polito for the kernel edition and tooling.
• define some language extensions to manage groups of IoT devices to program them at once. Managing hundreds or even thousands of IoT devices is a challenging task. We want to explore different solutions to help deploying and updating groups of IoT devices using some registration mechanism in a cloud server or some groups/roles based approaches for example. Note that ZweiDenker GmbH http://zweidenker.de/en/ is interested in collaboration on the IoT cloud management infrastructure
• expressing the architecture of IoT applications. We would like to explore also how to express IoT architectures and what are the abstractions that should be offered to developers such as expressing event-driven architectures with declarative ECA (Event-Conditions-Actions) rules. But we will study a couple of typical IoT applications.
• dynamically update an IoT application. An IoT application needs to adapt itself because unreachable or faulty devices or the diminution of available bandwith. We would like that the whole application can reconfigure itself in such situations as Guillaume Grondin proposes it in its PhD.
• explore Lightweight Virtual Machines. Virtual machines in the IoT context are very powerful for incremental deployment or dynamic updates. In this task, we would like to investigate what is the minimal memory consumption that we can reach for a VM usable for IoT.

Abstract
--------
Imagine a software development task: some sort of requirements and specification including performance goals and perhaps a platform and programming language. A group of developers head into a vast workroom. In that room they design and code—and sometimes they discover they need to explore the domain and the nature of potential solutions.
The Programming Experience (PX) Workshop is about what happens in that room when one or a couple of programmers sit down in front of computers and produce code. Do they create text that is transformed into running behavior (the old way), or do they operate on behavior directly (“liveness”); are they exploring the live domain to understand the true nature of the requirements; are they like authors creating new worlds; does visualization matter; is the experience immediate, immersive, vivid and continuous; do fluency, literacy, and learning matter; do they build tools, meta-tools; are they creating languages to express new concepts quickly and easily; and curiously, is joy relevant to the experience?
Here is a list of topic areas to get you thinking:
- creating programs
- liveness
- domain-specific languages
- psychology of programming
- user studies
- visual, auditory, tactile, and other non-textual languages
- text and more than text
- program understanding
- error tolerance
- non-standard tools
- experience of programming
- exploratory programming
The experience of programming and how to improve and evolve it are the focus of this workshop, and in this edition we would like to focus on exploratory programming.
Submissions
-----------
Submissions are solicited for Programming Experience 2018 (PX/18). The thrust of the workshop is to explore the human experience of programming—what it feels like to program, or more accurately, what it should feel like. The technical topics include exploratory programming, live programming, authoring, representation of active content, visualization, navigation, modularity mechanisms, immediacy, literacy, fluency, learning, tool building, and language engineering.
Submissions by academics, professional programmers, and non-professional programmer are welcome. Submissions can be in any form and format, including but not limited to papers, presentations, demos, videos, panels, debates, essays, writers' workshops, and art. Presentation slots will be between 30 minutes and one hour, depending on quality, form, and relevance to the workshop. Submissions directed toward publication should be so marked, and the program committee will engage in peer review for all such papers. Video publication will be arranged.
All artifacts are to be submitted via EasyChair (https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=px18) Papers and essays must be written in English, provided as PDF documents, and follow the new ACM Conference 'acmart' Format with the 'sigconf' option using the Times New Roman font family with 10 point font size. If you are formatting your paper using LaTeX, you will need to set the '10pt' option in the '\documentclass' command. If you are formatting your paper using Word, you may wish to use the provided Word template that supports this font size. Please include page numbers in your submission for review using the LaTeX command '\settopmatter{printfolios=true}' (see examples in template). Please also ensure that your submission is legible when printed on a black and white printer. In particular, please check that colors remain distinct and font sizes are legible.
There is no page limit on submitted papers and essays. It is, however, the responsibility of the authors to keep the reviewers interested and motivated to read the paper. Reviewers are under no obligation to read all or even a substantial portion of a paper or essay if they do not find the initial part of it interesting.

Papers and essays labeled as publications will undergo standard peer review; other submissions will be reviewed for relevance and quality; shepherding will be available.

Workshop format
---------------
Paper presentations, presentations without papers, live demonstrations, performances, videos, panel discussions, debates, writers' workshops, art galleries, dramatic readings.
We will be following a variant of the writers' workshop format used in the software patterns community. This format works well when the goals include improving the form or presentation of the ideas as well as improving or understanding the ideas themselves.
In the writers' workshop:
- A moderator leads and directs the discussion.
- We review the pieces and their ideas one at a time.
- In general, the authors whose work is under review are silent.
- When discussing form, the following kinds of questions will be asked:
+ What did you gather / understand from the piece?
+ What aspects of the piece worked well to present the ideas?
+ What aspects need improvement? (These comments must be in the form of suggestions, not criticisms.)
- When discussing the ideas, the following kinds of questions will be asked:
+ What are the ideas?
+ Which ideas seem like good ones (and why)?
+ Which ideas need improvement or elimination? (Make positive suggestions when you can.)
- At the end the authors ask questions of the group.
This is the basic format, but we adjust the flow according to the needs of the group and the way the discussion is going. It is formal to ensure all the important points are covered.

[JOB] Engineer 1 year: Pharo IoT platform

Inria RMoD are looking for a full-time engineer for helping with developing Pharo in the context of IoT. The focus of this job is "Pharo on embedded and mobile devices for the internet of things"
With Pharo, we have developed over the last two years an interactive, remote development environment. It allows embedded, headless software running on typical raspberry pi class hardware to be developed and debugged in an interactive way. It allows programmers to explore and change running headless embedded programs from their desktop development machine.
The next step will be to extend this infrastructure to cover the use case of industrial use: Deployment. We want to build a middle-ware to manage, authenticate and script deployed Pharo embedded installations.
The engineer will help to develop the Pharo IoT infrastructure, especially with a focus on industrial use:
• Improve Pharo for a platform with an industrial focus.
• Work on a middleware to manage deployed Pharo instances.
• Realize two small demos: First, as an industrial IoT example, a demo deployed on 20+ devices.
Demo 2: Pharo deployed on multiple mobile autonomous robots.
• Help with creating a website for PharoIOT.
We are looking for a candidate with some prior experience with Pharo.
In addition:
• Knowledge in Dynamic Languages (Pharo is a plus but not required)
• Experience with embedded development is a plus but not required
• English
Work in a research lab, but no paper writing, no teaching, no administration. In addition:
• Centrally located (one hour from Paris, 1h20 from London, 35 min from Brussels)
• Try a lot of good beer (our office is just 10km from the border to Belgium)
• Program with Pharo all day!
• Lille is an active city but not expensive (lot of students...), centrally located with good connections by train to everywhere (including CDG and Brussels airports).
• Duration: 12 Month
• Starting date: As soon as possible (Spring 2018)
• Salary: 2600-3200 euros brut / month, depending on experience
• Explanation Salary: french brutto = money after social charges (and base health insurance) before income tax, which is max one month income payed

CRCN “Young graduate scientist”
The CRCN position is a research position for both Junior (old CR2) and Senior (old CR1) level researchers. No teaching, permanent position with tenure after a probation period of 12 Months.

PROFILE
The candidate must have a doctoral degree, a strong background in Computer Science, and internationally significant research achievements in software engineering (particularly software evolution) and/or programming languages.
Duties include:
• Research (no teaching).
• Help manage the RMoD Research group.
• Be involved with the self-governance of the Inria Lab and Inria as a whole.
• Guide PhD students (and therefore get a French habilitation to be able to formally supervise PhD students).
• Help acquire additional funds for PhD students, Postdocs and Engineers.
• Transfer research results to the real world.

Lille is strategically located in Northern Europe with train connections to Paris (1h) , London (1h30) and Brussels (30 min.) RMoD is an Inria research project team. It consists of 6 permant researchers (Inria CR and DR, as well as University Assistant Professors) and Engineers, postdocs and students (Master and PhD). RMoD is an international team with more than 20 members from six countries.
