Dear Clément, thank you for your valuable contribution. So, what you are saying is that none of the Smalltalks around (VA Smalltalk, GemStone, Smalltalk/X, Dolphin, VisualWorks, ObjectStudio etc, pp.) is Smalltalk. Kent Beck once used the term "balkanization". The point of my email was to open eyes to not run into that behaviour! It won't help the Smalltalk community - to which I still count Pharo ... and hope you do too! Re: [Esug-list] "Pharo is Smalltalk inspired"

by Helge Nowak

Dear Johan, I think there is a common understanding of what Smalltalk is and what is not: Ruby, Java and many others ARE Smalltalk inspired. Up to now I considered all Smalltalks that carry that term and also Squeak and the Pharo fork as "true" Smalltalks. By Doru's words he considers Pharo more in the "inspired, non-Smalltalk" corner. That is ok, yet has consequences. One of those is that in this light Pharo is leaving the Smalltalk community. Whether you reckon the word "divorce" for that departure aggressive is your personal feeling. Divorce is a usual term describing the splitting of a former whole. I don't find it aggressive. Smalltalk as a technology, philosophy and community has always evolved - to the future (to what else?). Claiming that one leaves a community in emphasizing that one wants to move to the future silently implies that that community didn't move to the future, i. e. stays as is. I don't think that this is a correct observation with regards to Smalltalk. If it was intended to say that Pharo wants to move away from some Smalltalk concept (technical or non-technical) it should be said so, and whith regards to which concept and into what differing direction. There are many ways to the future. No problem with that. Smalltalk will walk its path. (That are 100% in line with the *idea* of Smalltalk, and that are very natural and clearly the next step). But if we say that we are Smalltalk, then people will immediately request 100% compatibility forever. We actually had exactly that case. Someone told us that for *every* change we need to first sync with all Smalltalk Vendors and all other open source Smalltalks and only of they are ok (and implement the same at the same time) we are allowed to e.g. add a new API in Pharo core classes. Reason: “Pharo is Smalltalk, it says right so on the website”. So Pharo is Smalltalk in the sense of being a reflective, dynamic, always improving environment. It is *not* Smalltalk in the sense of a finished, non-changing artefact. Marcus

by Helge Nowak

Dear Pharoers, I stumbled upon Doru’s (BTW excellent, as usual) presentation on Live Objects at NDC 2014. In there he states “Pharo is Smalltalk inspired. … we want to point ourselves that we are Smalltalk inspired because we want to move towards the future”. This implies three things: 1. Pharo is NOT Smalltalk 2. All Smalltalks are not moving towards the future 3. The Pharo community wants to get divorced from the community that gave them birth I am wondering whether this is indeed the official position of the Pharo community? And how the Smalltalkers think about it. Cheers Helge

ESUG 2014 REMINDER: 11th Innovation Technology Awards

by Jordi Delgado

ESUG 2014 REMINDER: 11th Innovation Technology Awards http://esug.org/Conferences/2014/Innovation-Technology-Awards Have you written innovative Smalltalk? The developers of any Smalltalk-based software can enter by submitting a 3-5min video of their software. Entrants demo their systems in a session at the end of Monday August 18th 2014, after which the conference attendees vote. (A vote consists in providing a sorted list of 3 preferred pieces of software.) The top 3 teams with the most innovative software will receive, respectively, 500 Euros, 300 Euros and 200 Euros. The results are announced in the Awards ceremony that is held during the social event. Applicants should provide the following information on the conference registration server. Once you have registered your personal info, an 'Awards' menu allows submitting your software. You can provide this information when you first register, or login again later and update your details. The registration server will open soon. You can start preparing your software right now though. Info to provide: Name of the software Licence information (free, shareware, or commercial) Name of the Smalltalk dialect used Name, Affiliation and Country of developers Besides, it would be great if the submission could include: URL for a video (3-5 min) showing a screencast / demo of the software URL for downloading the software or at least a runnable demo Deadline: August 15th Any Smalltalker can apply (students, companies, ...). The presented piece of code/software should be written in Smalltalk or directly support Smalltalk (e.g. Smalltalk VM). All Smalltalk dialects are accepted. The applicant should be "strongly related" to the presented code, be it as an author, as owner of the copyright/copyleft, or as an official representative of the copyright/copyleft owner. Bests, Jordi

CFP - Workshop on Evaluation and Usability of Programming Languages and Tools (PLATEAU)

by Craig Anslow

PLATEAU 2014 - CALL FOR PAPERS Fifth Workshop on Evaluation and Usability of Programming Languages and Tools (PLATEAU) Portland, Oregon, United States http://2014.splashcon.org/track/plateau2014 Workshop co-located with SPLASH, 20-24 October, 2014 http://2014.splashcon.org/ ** Theme ** Programming languages exist to enable programmers to develop software effectively. But how efficiently programmers can write software depends on the usability of the languages and tools that they develop with. The aim of this workshop is to discuss methods, metrics and techniques for evaluating the usability of languages and language tools. The supposed benefits of such languages and tools cover a large space, including making programs easier to read, write, and maintain; allowing programmers to write more flexible and powerful programs; and restricting programs to make them more safe and secure. PLATEAU gathers the intersection of researchers in the programming language, programming tool, and human-computer interaction communities to share their research and discuss the future of evaluation and usability of programming languages and tools. Some particular areas of interest are: - empirical studies of programming languages - methodologies and philosophies behind language and tool evaluation - software design metrics and their relations to the underlying language - user studies of language features and software engineering tools - visual techniques for understanding programming languages - critical comparisons of programming paradigms - tools to support evaluating programming languages - psychology of programming ** Submission Details ** PLATEAU encourages submissions of three types of papers: Research and position papers: We encourage papers that describe work-in-progress or recently completed work based on the themes and goals of the workshop or related topics, report on experiences gained, question accepted wisdom, raise challenging open problems, or propose speculative new approaches. We will accept two types of papers: research papers up to 8 pages in length; and position papers up to 2 pages in length. Hypotheses papers: Hypotheses papers explicitly identify beliefs of the research community or software industry about how a programming language, programming language feature, or programming language tool affects programming practice. Hypotheses can be collected from mailing lists, blog posts, paper introductions, developer forums, or interviews. Papers should clearly document the source(s) of each hypothesis and discuss the importance, use, and relevance of the hypotheses on research or practice. Papers may also, but are not required to, review evidence for or against the hypotheses identified. Hypotheses papers can be up to 4 pages in length. Papers will be published in the ACM Digital Library at the authors’ discretion. ** Important Dates ** Workshop paper submission due - 1 August, 2014 Notification to authors - 22 August, 2014 Early registration deadline - 19 September, 2014 ** Keynote ** Josh Bloch, former Chief Java Architect at Google and Distinguished Engineer at Sun Microsystems. ** Workshop Organizers ** Thomas LaToza, University of California, Irvine Joshua Sunshine, Carnegie Mellon University Craig Anslow, University of Calgary ** Program Committee ** Jennifer Baldwin, University of Victoria Andrew Begel, Microsoft Research Andrew Black, Portland State University Alan Blackwell, University of Cambridge Jeffrey Carver, University of Alabama Sebastian Erdweg, TU Darmstadt Thomas Fritz, University of Zurich Stefan Hanenberg, University of Duisburg-Essen Matthias Hauswirth, University of Lugano Ciera Jaspan, Google Leo Meyerovich, UC Berkeley Gail Murphy, University of British Columbia Emerson Murphy-Hill, NC State James Noble, Victoria University of Wellington Chris Parnin, NC State Janet Siegmund, University of Passau Andreas Stefik, University of Nevada, Las Vegas Chris Scaffidi, Oregon State University Éric Tanter, University of Chile — Kind regards, Craig Craig Anslow, PhD Postdoctoral Research Fellow Department of Computer Science University of Calgary, Canada T: 403 210 8159 E: craig.anslow(a)ucalgary.ca<mailto:craig.anslow@ucalgary.ca> W: http://anslow.cpsc.ucalgary.ca/

Tudor, you can take a bus from Stansted to Cambridge, but I am afraid it won't leave any later. There is a relatively cheap hotel near the Stansted airport (was it a Holiday Inn Express), so you could stay there overnight and leave for Cambridge the next morning. This one is probably cheaper and more comfortable than a Cab. OTOH, you can always see if you can book a taxi in advance for a fixed price. These are the options I've seen when I was planning my trip... Joachim Am 15.07.14 17:05, schrieb Tudor Girba: > Hi, > > I am looking for options to book the travel to Cambridge. Hi, I am looking for options to book the travel to Cambridge. The only flight the Stansted airport available to me arrives at 23:00. Unfortunately, the latest train leaves Stansted at 23:04 so I cannot make it to that one. Does anyone know another way to reach Cambridge from Stansted? How much would a cab cost? Couch surfing

by Johan Briglia

Hi all, This year I'll be one of the several student volunteers (to offer my help in the next ESUG) and I actually need a little help for a little something about it. As a student I had to choose the cheapest traveling agenda, so I will arrive one day earlier than expected. It's not a problem but I need to find a place to sleep between Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th. So I'm asking if anyone would be so kind to lend me a couch just for a night? I don't take much space, and I can cook! ;) As a relatively new smalltalker, I think it best to introduce myself: I'm Johan Briglia, PhD student in Psychology at Montpellier (south of France) where I'm working on the emergence of human memory and complex behaviors from neural networks. I'm using smalltalk to emulate dynamical networks in order to test some psychological theories, as a consolidation of AI research. Thank you for your help, and see you soon anyway! Johan

Re: [Esug-list] ESUG'14 early registration deadline is close

by Tudor Girba

Hi, Thanks for the reminder. I wanted to proceed, but I noticed that I did not receive any confirmation related to the request for accommodation. I thought I was supposed to get a way to pay. Should I do anything else about it? Need a native english speaker with a bit of time to help for ESUG

by Stéphane Ducasse

Hi Smalltalkers We need some help to organize the catering for ESUG 2014: basically lunches. We need someone to help us helping david and us dealing with meals. We could do it but we are not native speakers so sometimes we do not understand the implications or vocabularies. We selected a list of companies and we need to get offers and probably some menus. Please contact me directly. Stef and Luc

[ANN] SqueakJS 0.2 released, now runs Etoys

by Bert Freudenberg

Hi all, my SqueakJS VM has reached a major milestone. It is now sufficiently complete to run a full Etoys image (and possibly other non-closure images, too). It has support for most BitBlt modes, WarpBlt, even some Balloon2D rendering (for TTF fonts), a virtual file system, image saving etc. Try it: http://bertfreudenberg.github.io/SqueakJS/etoys/ (Safari and IE are significantly faster than Firefox and Chrome, best is Safari Webkit nightly, works on iPad too, hopefully Android) For more details, see my blogpost: http://croquetweak.blogspot.de/2014/07/squeakjs-runs-etoys-now.html Feedback and contributions welcome :) - Bert -

[ANN] Amber 0.12.6 released!

by Nicolas Petton

Hi! After two months of development we are happy to announce the release of Amber 0.12.6 (skipping 0.12.5 for technical reasons). The team has once again been busy improving Amber to make it rock more than ever! With 260 commits done by 8 contributors, this release brings several important improvements as well as the usual bug fixes. Highlights: - Helios now has a test runner - The `amber-cli` npm package installs the CLI tooling. `amber` is not to be installed globally any more. Instead, install `amber-cli` with `npm install -g amber-cli`. - New `amber-init` command: After installing the cli tooling, `amber init` initializes a new project. - `amber` and `amberc` cli tools can now be found in the `external` directory and in dedicated npm packages. - Amber now parses `$c` character literals. - Bootstrap 3 can be used in Amber projects (no more nameclash with Helios' bootstrap 2 using bootstrap2.3.2 name). - Wider range of jQuery versions allowed. API changes: + String >> + value: + ProtocolAnnouncement >> + package + Behavior >> + isTestClass + Package >> + isTestPackage + amber/{devel,deploy,lang} exports + nil + amber/helpers exports + nil We would like to thank the contributors who made this release possible, and especially Ryan Simmons for his work on the Helios Test Runner. /The Amber crew.
