first MOOC about OOP with Smalltalk and Seaside?

by Johannes Brauer

Dear Smalltalkers! There is an initiative for funding the development of massive open online courses (moocs) by the "Stifterverband für die deutsche Wissenschaft"" (http://www.stifterverband.info/ueber_den_stifterverband/english/index.html) You can get information about a running competition (MOOC PRODUCTION FELLOWSHIP) here: https://moocfellowship.org. Following the link https://moocfellowship.org/submissions/objektorientierte-programmierung-von… YOU CAN VOTE for the course offered by me resp. the NORDAKADEMIE (www.nordakademie.de) For voting you have to register by Facebook or email only. The MOOC we want to build will be based on a blended learning course we have been pursuing as a first year programming course under the headline "object oriented development of web applications" since a couple of years. During this class the students learn object oriented programming from the beginning using Smalltalk and Seaside. Since the material of our blended learning course is in German the first version of the projected MOOC will be in German, too. Getting one of the awards should offer the possibility to build an English version later on. I would be delighted if you could adjust our Smalltalk-MOOC project by voting for the course https://moocfellowship.org/submissions/objektorientierte-programmierung-von… Thank you very much Johannes Brauer Prof. Dr.-Ing. Re: [Esug-list] [ANN] GemStone/S product and team move to a dedicated company

by Dale Henrichs

Stef, Thanks.... I am hoping that there will be more interaction with Pharo as well ... As I said in a comment on my blog post[1]: ...right now though, our first priority is to smoothly transition from VMware to GemTalk and make sure that our existing customer base (both paid and free) are taken care of. Frankly at the moment there is no second priority:) Once we get things stabilized we will start talking about moving forward and I will be pushing for more active involvement with Pharo. I really wish a lot of successes to GemTalk and many new customers I love the name :) I hope that we will get more interactions between Pharo and GemTalk. [ANN] GemStone/S product and team move to a dedicated company

by Dale Henrichs

If you haven't already heard, the GemStone/S team is becoming an independent company after 3 years as part of VMware. The entire engineering team is moving to GemTalk Systems[1]. GemTalk Systems is completely focused on Smalltalk, GemStone/S and allied initiatives. I've published a blog post[2] with my take on the acquisition (short answer is "excited!"), if you have any additional questions, feel free to contact me. GSOC deadline is really approaching

by Stéphane Ducasse

What is really important is that all the smart students should get some money and help the community to grow and get better. I will propose to the esug board to support (up to the reasonable) projects that would not be funded by google with the money we got from previous year mentors. So this is important that all the students register and write their proposals. Stef > Dear mentors, > > Not to squeezing their time to write a proposal please invite the students you think they are good enough for your porject as soon as possible. > > To repeat the invitation steps: > go to your project page on http://gsoc2013.esug.org/projects, > click button Invite and select one student or two, > don't change your invitation until really necessary. > Notify them by email that they are invited and to hurry up writing a proposal. They must write first on our website, then register on http://www.google-melange.com and copy proposal there in following format: > project page from our website > student proposal from our website > student biography from our website > Deadline for students to write a proposal and copy it on Google-melange website is this Friday at 19 UTC! > Dear students, Your proposals are nicely coming on our special GSoC website http://gsoc2013.esug.org, but after being invited and writing it on our website, you need to copy it on official Google GSoC website too! That site is called Google-melange http://www.google-melange.com. So: Go to http://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/org/google/gsoc2013/esug and click Students apply, Register Fulfill a form there Open a proposal Copy in following order: project page from our website your proposal from our website your biography from our website Please do that immediately, even that it won't be complete yet. You have a time to improve it until adeadline in Friday at 19 UTC. That way you won't miss that deadline for sure. Beware that missing a GSoC deadline is a fatal mistake, there is no excuse to rescue you from it! Best regards Janko
