Hi lists, you may already have seen it, but just in case you haven't: we're going to sit down for some Burgers or Pizza and beer and all things Smalltalk at Restaurant Steinfels in Zürich[1] on Monday, January 6th, starting at 7pm. [ANN] Gravel Smalltalk

We're happy to announce Gravel Smalltalk, a modern Smalltalk implementation for the JVM. Gravel.st aim to be a fully ANSI compliant Smalltalk implementation with modern language enhancements as optional typing, namespaces and traits. Gravel Smalltalk is developed in Smalltalk itself, in the spirit of Squeak's Slang. It's core functionality is then transformed to java source code which is then used to compile smalltalk code and bootstrap the system. *Features: - Traits - Optional typing - Patching compiler - Full block closures - Resumable exceptions - Namespaces - Mirror based reflection facilities We aim to provide an interactive development environment in the Smalltalk philosophy as well as a stable and fast runtime platform. To facilitate interactive development we've developed the so-called patching compiler which can add or change running class and method definitions in the JVM. Gravel Smalltalk uses the jsr-292 (aka invokedynamic) language and VM enhancements in the JVM. So you need Oracle Java 7 or OpenJDK Java 7 or up. *Current status: Gravel Smalltalk is very alpha. We have enough code in the base library to boot the Gravel IDE and to run SUnit. Work is currently being done on the online debugger, IDE and base library. The typed Smalltalk to Java translation is not yet ported from VisualWorks Smalltalk since we have a dependency on our Pegon Type System (http://sourceforge.net/projects/pegon) *License: Gravel Smalltalk is licensed under the very liberal Apache-2.0 License, except for parts of the Gravel IDE where we redistribute code from semantic-ui and codemirror.net. Hi all, I'm proud to announce SqueakJS, a new Squeak VM that runs on Javascript: http://bertfreudenberg.github.io/SqueakJS/ It was inspired by Dan's JSqueak/Potato VM for Java, and similarly only runs the old Squeak 2.2 mini.image for now. But I developed it inside the Lively Kernel, which allowed me to make a nice UI to look inside the VM (in addition to all the Lively tools): It represents regular Squeak objects as Javascript objects with direct object references. SmallIntegers are represented as Javascript numbers, there is no need for tagging. Instance variables and indexable fields are held in a single array named "pointers". Word and byte binary objects store their data in arrays named "bytes" or "words". CompiledMethod instances have both "pointers" and "bytes". Float instances are not stored as two words as in Squeak, but have a single "float" property that stores the actual number (and the words are generated on-the-fly when needed). For garbage collection, I came up with a hybrid scheme: the bulk of the work is delegated to the Javascript garbage collector. Only in relatively rare circumstances is a "manual" garbage collection needed. This hybrid GC is a semi-space GC with an old space and a new space. Old space is a linked list of objects, but newly allocated objects are not added to the list, yet. Therefore, unreferenced new objects will be automatically garbage-collected by Javascript. This is like Squeak's incremental GC, which only looks at objects in new space.
