Bye, bye Jtalk... Hello Amber!

As some of you may know there is a new Smalltalk in town - and up until today it was called Jtalk. After a furious three week development period after the ESUG 2011 conference (where Jtalk raised some eyebrows) we are now making a first release humbly numbered 0.9. We are also taking the opportunity to pick a slicker name for Jtalk - Amber! New website is at: http://www.amber-lang.net So, why would you take a look at Amber? In our opinion Amber is perfectly positioned for the HTML5 onslaught and the explosion of all-things-javascript like for example Nodejs. It is a Smalltalk that plays well with others and can seamlessly use Javascript libraries. At the same time Amber feels like a *real* Smalltalk, the environment is all there including Workspace, Transcript, Browser, senders/implementors/references to class, TestRunner, Inspectors, code editing with syntax coloring and a Debugger. There is no image, but all compilation is incremental. Below follows a summary of the massive changes since ESUG that triggered us to make a first release. We hope you join us in developing Amber and having fun! There is already work being made in using Amber on top of Java using Rhino, using Amber for making games and lots more. the early distributions of squeak included a project with several morphic demos: clock, racetrack, lens, scrolling text through a complicated space, etc. Are these still available somewhere? under what name? Or, do I have to load and old version and file-out? thanks davew

Interesting comment. I was extrapolating from the idea that SUN's support for java is what made it successful despite it was obsolete from the beginning. Also what Microsoft did with C# So a Smalltalk like language with the support from Google would be nice and with lots of potential to become a commercial success... A couple years ago Goran did a lot of work on this, and the emails we exchanged are in this list's archive. I don't know if you had a chance to look at them, but I'd strongly suggest doing so because of all the tuning etc that went into making videos REALLY small (IIRC ~70 minutes for ~70mb or so). Test for Video encoding ESUG 2011

Hi, So we have 110GB of Videos... that need to get smaller. I did an experiment with Handbrake encoding to H.264/MPEG-4 (.m4v). >From 2.6GB .MOV from the camear to 218MB: http://esug.org/data/ESUG2011/Videos/26-Friday/ VLC can play this.
