Hi Rob, The issue you raise is indeed very pertinent. But I wonder how any company can agree _beforehand_ to serve as a replacement to the original developers. There are many concerns that make it very hard to commit to such an agreement. For example, I would find it dangerous to commit to taking over a project without knowing the state of the source code. Because of that, I see more possibilities in a traditional escrow agreement between the company and its customer, combined with an association of companies using Smalltalk (Pharo?): - the traditional escrow agreement makes sure that the customer gets the source code so he can contact another Smalltalk Pharo company to continue the development - the existence of the association and its members demonstrates to the customer that he can always get in touch with other development companies that can continue working for him. There are discussions in the Pharo community to create such a consortium. Personally, I would prefer aligning like that. What do you think? Smalltalk the JVM and JetBrains ...

Hey everyone, Smalltalk on the JVM, and JetBrains IDEA support! So this is the skinny. We've met the basic requirements original discussed with Jet Brains early in 2011 for Redline Smalltalk support to make it onto their roadmap. We need your help to get it moved up. Jet Brains has a voting system where registered users vote up features they want to see implemented. As of today, there is now one for Redline support. The next step is pretty simple... We need everyone to login with google/yahoo or sign up for a Jet Brains account and vote for Redline support.We need you to tweet about it.... to email people about it.... to google + about it. ... to stand on the street corner talking about how the world is going to come to an end unless this happens. Hi Rob, Nice initiative ! We should keep this discussion in a public place. It is quite hard to find freelance/companies providing Smalltalk support. It would be good to get some publicity and learn to know each other :) I'm proposing Smalltalk solutions more and more often (coming from a Ruby/Rails world). But I cannot provide as much as guarantee as I would like to my clients. Hi Rob, i don't see any specific about Smalltalk here. Every time that a company used a not so well known products or libraries, this risk could occurs. Even if the language is well known, i guess this is difficult to find someone that will replace the original company in a short period of time because you need to understand the domain of the client. UK Smalltalk User Group Meeting on Monday 19th December

For UK-based Smalltalkers: Just a quick reminder that the next UK Smalltalk User Group ( http://www.uksmalltalk.org/ ) meeting is on this coming Monday, 19th December at 6.30pm at it¹s usual location The Counting House. It has a Christmas theme. Mulled wine and mince pies courtesy of Cincom when you arrive and drinks at their expense for the evening. If that isn¹t enough to tempt you we are discussing the ideas for next year¹s meet ups. We have around 50 ideas and only 12 evenings. This is your chance to help decide which will make interesting and entertaining events. Then Nick and I can get on with trying to arrange them. Another thought is if you can bring a small Smalltalk present. An idea or useful thing you know or have learnt this year about Smalltalk that you think the rest of us might not know or need reminding of. Again Cincom is giving a small prize for the best of these presents. Newcomers are most welcome, whatever your experience or interest in Smalltalk. Jason

In my lecture I do the following: after a brief introduction to Pharo, they start to program by doing the exercises of Pharo By example, the tutorial of Mondrian, Glamour and some exercises with EyeSee. Next, I give to each of them a short project in which they have to implement algorithms. The projects I picked are either about Moose, Mondrian or Pharo. I further tell them that if they do a good thing, then they will become worldwide famous by having their code being including in a mainstream distribution and their name publicized. I therefore avoid short scholar exercises that cannot be valorized. Some are doing good, other not so good, like always. > Some of those will be paper exercises, but I would like to have a simple language for them to express their algorithms, where the performance analysis would be particularly clear, and it would be a huge bonus if we could bolt an algorithm visualizer/animator on the side. My students use Mondrian and EyeSee, this is cool since they quickly get a visual feedback. Mondrian and EyeSee are interactive, come with many examples and are easy to use. > I'd probably use smalltalk if I had my druthers (just because it's so malleable), but I'm guessing that wouldn't be super popular with the students (as they only had a bit of Smalltalk 3 semesters earlier as part of an OO course, and Java is probably the language they know best). Smalltalk is indeed not mainstream, however I do not face resistance from the students or other professors against using it. I tell them exactly that: - many students of the previous semesters of my lecture got significant results because of Smalltalk, ranging from publication in the ACM digital library to winning International ACM Student Research Competition.
