Call for Participation: STIC - Smalltalk Industry Conference

Smalltalk Solutions is now called STIC - Smalltalk Industry Conference. STIC is a forum where Smalltalk professionals, researchers, and enthusiasts can meet and share ideas and experiences. We are currently accepting proposals for talks involving Smalltalk technology and other areas of innovation in the software industry. We're looking forward to an excellent conference, and need your participation to maintain the high technical level of the conference! The conference will take place in Biloxi, Mississippi, March 19 - 21, 2012. Presentations will have 45 minutes time slots including discussion. They may be in the form of * Technical Presentations * Experience Reports * Technology Demonstrations * Panel Discussions * Workshops * ... Proposals should be submitted by email to <mailto:STS_Speakers@stic.st> STS_Speakers(a)stic.st and should include the following information: * Name * Contact Information * Type of Presentation * Title of Presentation * Brief Abstract * Short Biography of the Presenter(s) * Any constraints on date/time * Any other information of importance in evaluating the proposal If you cannot discuss the internal application you are working on because of corporate restrictions, perhaps you can discuss the application's component usage or development process. We will also be reserving time for short presentations, of the form of Lightning Talks and (very) short technology demonstrations, but these will be available for sign-up at the conference rather than as advance proposals. Submissions should be received by December 15, 2011. Note that submissions with incomplete information may be rejected - particularly if bio or abstract information is missing. Presenters will qualify for a significantly discounted registration. This year that will be $200 US, or $160 US for STIC members. OpenDBX sees ODBC just as another backend. And of course, that's only if you like accessing by ODBC (which I don't like BTW). Hi, DBXTalk is good work! I really love to see that stuff going forward! Before I spend a lot of time playing around: has anybody tried using Pharo/GLORP/ODBC (Access or SQLSrv) on Windows? Or Pharo/GLORP/SQLite on Windows? Is there some place on the web where I can find info on how to set this up? In an open source context, this is probably a heretic question, and if I could choose freely, Linux and PostgresQL would be my favorite. OTOH: The fact that each windows installation comes with an Access engine and respective ODBC driver makes the combination very attractive for starting something on a windows machine really fast. No installation of anything but Pharo, no need for admin rights or anything. Just set up the odbc driver and off you go! STIC is currently planning an Academic Workshop called Smalltalk Direction

Dear Academic ESUG Members, Since March STIC has an Academic Advisory Board. Yesterday we had a joint meeting of the STIC board and the Academic Advisory Board. And we have started planning an Academic Workshop under the title "Smalltalk Direction". The workshop shall take place as part of STIC conference place in Biloxi, Mississippi, March 19 - 21, 2012. The workshop will be international and shall have a formal program committee with members from all over the world. The papers accepted for the workshop shall be published in an internationally accepted publication. As we took the decision yesterday, not everything has been formalized yet, but I wanted to inform you as soon as possible that you can start panning what you be able to present. For academic Smalltalkers this will be a good chance to present their research in Northern America. To ease the cost we also decided to have a Student Volunteer Program similar to ESUG.
