[Smalltalks 2013] --- Invitation
by Andres Valloud July 26, 2013

July 26, 2013

The Fundación Argentina de Smalltalk (FAST, http://www.fast.org.ar) invites you to the 7th International Conference on Smalltalk Technologies (Smalltalks), to be held from October 30th through November 1st at the Universidad Tecnológica Nacional, Facultad Regional Rosario, located in Rosario, Argentina. Everyone, including teachers, students, researchers, developers and entrepreneurs, are welcome as speakers or attendees. Registration is free and now open at http://www.fast.org.ar/smalltalks2013. This year we are accepting donations from participants to help fund the conference's costs. Please see the Donate section at FAST's website, http://www.fast.org.ar/smalltalks2013/donate. Contributions are greatly appreciated, and can be received both in pesos for local attendees, as well as via Paypal for those coming from abroad. Donors will receive a set of thank you gifts as well as the conference's shirt. The goal of the Conference is to strengthen the bonds between the Argentine and the international Smalltalk community through the exchange of works, experiences and anecdotes connected with this technology and related matters. As in the previous editions, renowned members of the international Smalltalk community will visit us, and like last year we will have a Research Session with publications reviewed by an international committee. Also, the traditional Industry Track will be available for those who prefer a more practical environment. You can submit papers or talks now through our website at http://www.fast.org.ar/smalltalks2013/technical-session The Industry Track's submission deadline is October 7th. For more information about related events, such as a Pharo Sprint or talks and presentations around the dates of the conference, please visit http://www.fast.org.ar/smalltalks2013/events We will update related event information as we get closer to the conference, so please check for updates. As in previous years, we will have a social dinner during the conference. If you are planning to attend, please reply to this email with a subject of "[Social Dinner]" and indicate how many people will be coming in your party. We will have a variety of dishes available for everyone. If you have special needs other than vegetarian dishes, please let us know. For any additional questions please contact us at info(a)fast.org.ar. See you there!

About Sport licenses
by Stéphane Ducasse July 23, 2013

July 23, 2013

Hi Sport contributors Today while browsing the seaside repository I saw that there is a Seaside30LGPL and I was puzzled. I looked and I saw that this is because it uses Sport and Sport is licensed under LGPL (probably the only packages in mainstream Smalltalk). I asked Bruce if Sport could be relicensed or have a dual license MIT/LGPL here is his answer: > Steph, > > We've had this discussion before, and as before I'm fine with this in principle but it's not me alone to say. Sport for different dialects was written by different people. > > Sent from my phone. Please forgive brevity. > So if you participated to Sport can you reply to this mail so that we can get a dual license LGPL/MIT. And yes I'm nervous about mixing licenses in an image-based system that a infinite minority of programmers understand or even know. Stef

ANN: Mercurial integration for Smalltalk/X IDE
by Jan Vrany July 19, 2013

July 19, 2013

Hello, after 9 month of development and almost that many of use, I'm pleased to announce a first version of stx:libscm, a Mercurial integration into Smalltalk/X IDE. Available at: https://bitbucket.org/janvrany/stx-libscm Summary: - class browser integration: classes and packages can be committed right from the browser via menu. - file browser integration: provides convenient menus for performing common repository tasks like commit, update, push, pull, merge. - uses specialized smalltalk merge tool to merge .st source files which uses semantic diff/merge instead of text diff/merge. - provides "Smalltalkish", object-oriented API to Mercurial repositories using hg command line or command server internally. Best, Jan

Ph.D. Student Position on Dynamic Reflective Language Integration with FPGAs for Robotic Applications
by jannik.laval July 11, 2013

July 11, 2013

Dear Smalltalkers, We are searching for a PhD Student. Following you will find the proposal. Best regards, ====== Location: Mines de Douai and ENSTA Brest (France) Advisor and contacts: Noury Bouraqadi, Luc Fabresse, Jannik Laval (car(a)mines-douai.fr, website: http://car.mines-douai.fr/) Loïc Lagadec (loic.lagadec(a)ensta-bretagne.fr) Profile: the candidate must hold a recent Master of Science degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering and must have solid skills in dynamic reflective language and OOP. Description of the work: The goal of this PhD is to study Smalltalk integration with FPGAs for robotic applications. This integration will enable us get the best from both worlds. Developers are provided with a high-level dynamic reflective language (Smalltalk) for building and debugging their applications. Still, we can have high performances by projecting part of the programs into FPGAs. These reconfigurable hardware chips can achieve performance faster than C programs, while consuming much less energy. The work to do can decompose into the following tasks: -Build reference robotic applications fully in Pharo Smalltalk using actual robots (see http://car.mines-douai.fr/robots/) -Analyze these applications to identify critical parts to project on FPGAs to significantly increase performances (speed, energy) -Do the actual projection to FPGA and evaluate performances of the transformed applications -Generalize the approach and define a methodology for turning Smalltalk code into FPGA -Propose a solution to automate the methodology The Ph.D student will receive a grant which net amount is approximately 1420 euros per month for 3 years (36 months). He will be co-supervised by Loïc Lagadec from the ENSTA-Bretagne (Lab-STICC, Brest) and Jannik Laval, Luc Fabresse and Noury Bouraqadi from Ecole des Mines de Douai (CAR, http://car.mines-douai.fr/) The first 18th month will be spent in Douai (Lille area), while the last half of the PhD will be spent in Brest. However, during the full 3 years, there will be a strong interaction with co-supervisers from both labs. Bibliography: -A Robust Layered Control System For A Mobile Robot. R. Brooks.
