[JOB] Pharo Engineer, Infrastructure
by marcus.denker＠inria.fr Dec. 12, 2015

Dec. 12, 2015

Engineer Position 1 year + 1 year ========================== INRIA RMoD and the Pharo Consortium are looking for a full-time engineer for helping with developing Pharo and the infrastructure around it. The focus of this job is the infrastructure that Pharo provides to external projects as well as the infrastructure we use to develop Pharo itself. - Infrastructure for external projects Pharo is used in many contexts: an ever growing number of frameworks are contributed by the community. Pharo already provides CI infrastructure, but what is missing is the automatic check of collections of frameworks and libraries. We want to provides validated "distributions" focussing on certain tasks, for example Pharo for Web development. - Pharo and Git Pharo has some support for using Git. The goal is to improve the support of git and other versioning systems. - Pharo itself The engineer is expected to be actively involved in helping to improve the infrastructure that the Pharo community uses (CI server for continues integration, interplay with issue tracking) and to actively help with day-to-day bug fixing. We are looking for a candidate with prior experience with Pharo and possibly some background in continuous integration: - Knowledge in Dynamic Languages - Continuous integration and deployment - English Work in a research lab, but no paper writing, no teaching, no administration. In addition: - Centrally located (one hour from Paris, 1h20 from London, 35 min from Brussels) - Try a lot of good beer (our office is just 10km from the border to Belgium) - Program with Pharo all day! Lille is an active city but not expensive (lot of students...), centrally located with good connections by train to everywhere (including CDG and Brussels airports). Duration: 12 + 12 months Starting date: Feb or March 2016 Salary: 2600-3200 euros brut / month, depending on experience Location: Lille (no remote job possible) More about Pharo: http://www.pharo.org INRIA RMOD: http://rmod.lille.inria.fr INRIA Lille: http://www.inria.fr/lille/ INRIA in General: http://www.inria.fr Lille: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lille http://wikitravel.org/en/Lille Do not hesitate to contact us for more information.

PhD Opening in Refactoring
by Goubier Thierry Dec. 3, 2015

Dec. 3, 2015

Hi all, I have an opening on a PhD subject on refactoring for embedded software (start 10/2016), with a 6 month internship before, at CEA List, in collaboration with INRIA RMOD (Stéphane Ducasse has been very nice to agree to be the thesis co-supervisor). The PhD title is : 'Reuse of embedded sofware code artefacts by Refactoring' and concern itself with the evolution of embedded software when targeting new parallel embedded platforms or evaluation platforms, and how this can be expressed and supported by domain-specific Refactorings. It will take in account how software gets rewritten to target high performance embedded platforms, exposing highly advanced architectures (parallel and very high efficiency) and advanced software optimizations, and how this work should be expressed and supported by adequate refactorings. The internship is about starting the PhD with a sample study of the changes undertaken by embedded software code when it is evaluated and re-architectured/optimized in industrial projects undertaken by the laboratory. Both take place at CEA List, LCE lab, in Saclay (SW of Paris), in a laboratory known for its research in simulation of Systems on Chip (SoC), SoC design, compilation for manycores, and neural networks architectures. CEA is a fair employer for internships and PhD students, with a higher than average salary and significant benefits. Interested candidates should contact me or Stéphane Ducasse, Regards, Thierry -- Thierry Goubier CEA List DACLE/LIST/LCE 91191 Gif sur Yvette Cedex France Phone/Fax: +33 (0) 1 69 08 32 92 / 83 95 http://www-list.cea.fr/index.php/en/technological-research/research-program…

Zürich Smalltalk Meetup November 10th, 2015
by jtuchel＠objektfabrik.de Oct. 22, 2015

Oct. 22, 2015

Deal Smalltalk fans in the Zürich area, if you happen to have a free slot in your calendars for November 10th, 2015 (I guess 19:30 will be a good time to start), I have something for you: We would like to get together with Smalltalkers of all flavors to chat about the latest news, tools and projects at a restaurant near Bahnhof Hardbrücke, like we did several times in 2014. I think it's time to catch up and I know Peter, Philippe and Michal feel the same. So please send me a note and let me know if you'd like to join us for an evening of Smalltalk... I'll reserve a table and let you know exactly where we meet. If you are not in the Zürich area but don't mind travelling to meet us, feel free to come! Hope to see you soon in Zürich! Joachim

Job | Seeking a Smalltalker for a PhD on Multi-Robot Systems
by Noury Bouraqadi Oct. 13, 2015

Oct. 13, 2015

Hi, My team has an opening for a PhD student to work on multi-robot exploration and mapping. We target search and rescue operations with UGVs controlled using PhaROS (Pharo + our client for the Robot Operating System). You'll find the full description below. More info on our team can be found at: http://car.mines-douai.fr <http://car.mines-douai.fr/> Best, Prof. Noury Bouraqadi Ecole des Mines de Douai Lille area France ------------ CONTACT Prof. Noury Bouraqadi, noury.bouraqadi AT mines-douai.fr <http://mines-douai.fr/> Dr. Luc Fabresse, luc.fabresse AT mines-douai.fr <http://mines-douai.fr/> Dr. Guillaume Lozengez, guillaume.lozengez AT mines-douai.fr <http://mines-douai.fr/> DESCRIPTION Robotic exploration and mapping is basic to many robotic applications and more specifically to search and rescue operations. It relies on robots to build a map of the environment as a first step to further mission specific tasks (eg. extracting trapped victims). In scenarios where time is critical such in the aftermath of an earthquake, the use of multiple robots allows to speed up the exploration and to take advantage of distributed sensor to increase the mapping process. Each robot explores a different but connected area. The global map is built by merging local maps built by individual robots. To build a map of an unknown environment, a robot has to perform Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM). Based on different perceived data (typically odometery and laser scans), metric SLAM algorithms localize the robot while building an occupancy grid. The occupancy grid models the environment as a matrix where each cell denotes the probability of occupancy of a small area. Best metric SLAM algorithms produce precise maps that allow localization with typically centimetric precision. However, an occupancy grid map is materialized as a large matrix. Beside the memory consumption, such a map leads to high CPU consumption for path planning. CPU consumption is also a concern in multi-robot exploration. Indeed, merging metric maps produced by different robots is computationally intensive. The above drawbacks of metrics maps can be mitigated by the use of topological maps. However, topological maps do not allow precise obstacle delimitations needed for autonomous robots exploration. The goal of this PhD is to contribute to our ongoing effort, and propose a solution that gathers the best of both worlds. The expected outcome is a SLAM algorithm that builds a topological map that embeds metric information. The target algorithm should be implemented on top of the ROS (www.ros.org <http://www.ros.org/>) middleware and validated both in simulation and on actual robots. It should also be supported by a set of automated tests that can safely run on an actual robot. BIBLIOGRAPHY - Robotic Mapping and Exploration. C. Stachniss.
