I heard an anecdote of a recent merger between two companies in which one had over 200 people supporting a Java application and the other had ~25 people supporting a Smalltalk application. The surprising result was that the Smalltalk application was selected for the merged company rather than the Java one. I would like to know which companies were involved, when this occurred, and what the precise details were. The focus of this job is "Pharo on embedded and mobile devices for the internet of things". - Embedded Pharo on ARM The currently available class of ARM devices (BeagleBone, Raspberry PI) are a very interesting platform for Pharo. The engineer should strengthen the existing efforts to get Pharo working on these platforms. - Pharo on Android Improve the support of Android devices. With Pharo6, we will migrate to a complete new design and implementation of UI, Windowing and graphics. The engineer will work on making these features available on Android devices. - Pharo itself The engineer is expected to be actively involved in helping to improve the infrastructure that the Pharo community used (CI server for continues integration, interplay with issue tracking) and to actively help with day-to-day bug fixing. The focus of this job is the infrastructure that Pharo provides to external projects as well as the infrastructure we use to develop Pharo itself. - Infrastructure for external projects Pharo is used in many contexts: an ever growing number of frameworks are contributed by the community. Pharo already provides CI infrastructure, but what is missing is the automatic check of collections of frameworks and libraries. We want to provides validated "distributions" focussing on certain tasks, for example Pharo for Web development. - Pharo and Git Pharo has some support for using Git. PhD Opening in Refactoring

Hi all, I have an opening on a PhD subject on refactoring for embedded software (start 10/2016), with a 6 month internship before, at CEA List, in collaboration with INRIA RMOD (Stéphane Ducasse has been very nice to agree to be the thesis co-supervisor). The PhD title is : 'Reuse of embedded sofware code artefacts by Refactoring' and concern itself with the evolution of embedded software when targeting new parallel embedded platforms or evaluation platforms, and how this can be expressed and supported by domain-specific Refactorings. It will take in account how software gets rewritten to target high performance embedded platforms, exposing highly advanced architectures (parallel and very high efficiency) and advanced software optimizations, and how this work should be expressed and supported by adequate refactorings. The internship is about starting the PhD with a sample study of the changes undertaken by embedded software code when it is evaluated and re-architectured/optimized in industrial projects undertaken by the laboratory. Both take place at CEA List, LCE lab, in Saclay (SW of Paris), in a laboratory known for its research in simulation of Systems on Chip (SoC), SoC design, compilation for manycores, and neural networks architectures. CEA is a fair employer for internships and PhD students, with a higher than average salary and significant benefits.
