Looking for my next Smalltalk opportunity
by Sebastian Jordan Aug. 5, 2026

Aug. 5, 2026

Hi everyone, After almost seven years being part of the Pharo community, I wanted to reach out here because this community has been an important part of my professional journey. I am currently finishing my PhD at INRIA, France, and I am looking for my next opportunity as a software developer. After completing my PhD, I will be moving back to LATAM, Bolivia, and I am looking for a fully remote position starting around mid-October or November. I would love to continue working with Smalltalk. Most of my experience is with Pharo, but I am open to any Smalltalk dialect and different kinds of projects. I am also open to full-time positions, contracts, or consulting work. Over the years, I have contributed to several parts of the Pharo ecosystem. Before my PhD, I worked as an R&D software engineer at INRIA on Pharo, where I developed tools for code analysis and transformation, contributed to Moose and pharo-ai. I have mentored students through Google Summer of Code since 2021. I have continued to work on programming languages and developer tools throughout my PhD, focusing on runtime-related issues, instrumentation, profiling (dynamic analysis), and memory analysis. Solving difficult problems, designing clear object-oriented systems, writing tests, improving existing codebases through refactoring, and building tools that increase developer productivity are all aspects of software development that I enjoy. I also enjoy working on enterprise applications where maintainability and good design are important. If you know of a team looking for someone with my background, or if you would simply like to discuss possible opportunities, I would be very happy to hear from you. I can also send my CV privately to anyone interested. Thanks everyone for your help, and I hope to continue being part of the Smalltalk community. Best regards, Sebastian JORDAN MONTAÑO

UKSTUG Meeting: Koen De Hondt - Behaviour-Driven Development with Hera - 24 June 2026
by UK Smalltalk June 18, 2026

June 18, 2026

At ESUG 2025, Hera ( https://github.com/koendehondt/hera-for-pharo ) was introduced as a BDD framework bringing full Gherkin expressiveness to Pharo. Since then, Hera has evolved significantly — both as a framework and as a tool adopted in real-world industrial settings. After a brief introduction to Gherkin ( https://cucumber.io/docs/gherkin/reference ) for writing given-when-then scenarios, various aspects of Hera will be highlighted. A functional overview will set the scene, followed by a dive into the code to show how Hera maps Gherkin features and scenarios to Smalltalk classes and methods. During a live demo, example Gherkin scenarios for a simple Pharo Spec application will be written to explain the full scenario development cycle. Koen De Hondt ( https://be.linkedin.com/in/koendehondt ) has used Smalltalk since 1988, first as a student, then as an academic researcher, and then in industry. He holds a PhD in computer science from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (1998). In the nineties and a few years after the turn of the century, he was one of the driving forces behind the Belgian Smalltalk User Group (BSUG). In that time frame, he presented at ESUG conferences several times. In 2003, he left the Smalltalk community for other adventures. In 2023, he returned to the Smalltalk scene and started all: objects all: theTime ( https://all-objects-all-the-time.st/ ). He has been an active contributor to Pharo ever since. Software development tools are his main interest. He is the main author of the book “Application Building with Spec 2.0” ( https://books.pharo.org/BuildingApplicationsWithSpec/ ). This will be an online meeting. If you'd like to join us, please sign up in advance on the meeting's Meetup page ( https://www.meetup.com/ukstug/events/313860369/ ) to receive the meeting details.

Smalltalk student from Egypt looking for a sponsor to attend ESUG student volunteer program
by stephane ducasse May 18, 2026

May 18, 2026

Hi Smalltalkers as you know ESUG is sponsoring students by offering free hosting and conference access during the conference but we cannot sponsor the trips else we would be bankrupted in one year. I forward you this call from a student from Egypt. > Dear ESUG Community, > > My name is Anas Mohamed, and I am a student and a competitive programmer from Egypt. > > I am honored to have the opportunity to join ESUG 2026 as a student volunteer. However, as a student from a low-income economic background in the Arab region, the costs of travel and visa remain a significant challenge for me. > > I am reaching out to kindly ask if there is any company or individual within the ESUG community who would be willing to sponsor my flight tickets and visa expenses. > > Being part of ESUG would mean a lot to me. I am eager to learn, gain experience, and actively contribute as a volunteer during the event. > > I am highly motivated to make the most of this opportunity and represent the community in a positive way. > > Thank you very much for your time and consideration. > > Best regards, > Anas Mohamed

UKSTUG Meeting: Domenico Cipriani - Music and Sound with Pharo: an Unexpected Ambassador for Smalltalk - 27 May 2026
by UK Smalltalk May 15, 2026

May 15, 2026

Coypu and Phausto are two Pharo packages offering respectively a DSL and an API that turn the Pharo IDE into a music and sound design environment. They enable on-the-fly music composition, pattern sequencing, and DSP (Digital Signal Processing) programming. Born as a solo project and free, open source alternative to Symbolic Sound Kyma, they have been subsequently funded by the Pharo Association and Inria. Coypu ( https://github.com/lucretiomsp/Coypu ), deeply inspired by Tidal Cycles, handles musical pattern creation and playback across different audio servers. Phausto ( https://github.com/lucretiomsp/Phausto ) provides an interface for programming synthesizers and audio processing via an embedded Faust compiler, with Bloc widgets that make it easy to display and control synthesis parameters. Phausto can also be used to develop audio plugins thanks to its JUCE and Cmajor exporters. Live performances with both tools have demonstrated that Pharo can handle real-time music and sound design reliably, with solid timing and no audio glitches. Domenico Cipriani ( https://linktr.ee/lucretiomsp ) will present their roots, architecture, and core features, and illustrate how I have been using them in the last years for live performance, teaching, and presenting at conferences across Europe, where they served as a way to introduce Pharo and Smalltalk to audiences unfamiliar with them. Domenico is a researcher in computer music with the Evref team at Inria, where he is the architect of Coypu and Phausto, two libraries for live coding and DSP programming in Pharo Smalltalk. He holds an M.A. in Linguistics from the University of Padova, specializing in social semiotics, and is a graduate of the SAE Institute in Barcelona. Since 2016, he has been working with Symbolic Sound's Kyma system, participating regularly in the Kyma International Sound Symposium, where he has explored the integration of Kyma with p5.js and network-distributed sound systems via Open Sound Control. In 2019, he presented an interactive performance based on distributed Open Sound Control at the Sonic Experiments festival at ZKM. He has since performed at the Algorave hosted by ICLC24 in Shanghai and at the closing event of ICLC25 in Barcelona. Under the alias Lucretio and as one half of The Analogue Cops, he has spent over a decade producing raw minimalist dance music, releasing more than 100 vinyl records and performing at prominent clubs worldwide through various collaborations, most notably with Blawan and Objekt. This will be an online meeting. If you'd like to join us, please sign up in advance on the meeting's Meetup page ( https://www.meetup.com/ukstug/events/313860368/ ) to receive the meeting details.

UKSTUG Meeting: Agustín Martínez - Diálogo: A Drawing-Based Programming Environment for Kids, Built in Cuis Smalltalk - 29 April 2026
by UK Smalltalk April 20, 2026

April 20, 2026

Diálogo ( https://dialog.ar/ ) is a desktop tool that lets children aged 10–17 create their own videogames by combining drawn characters with a set of visual icons — no typing required. The icons compose like cards, activating behaviours in the drawn objects and naturally leading kids through concepts such as categories, rules, recursion, and metaprogramming. In this talk I'll show how Smalltalk's live, image-based environment made it uniquely suited for building Diálogo. I'll give a demo of the app, walk through some implementation metrics, and discuss the pedagogical ideas behind the project — including a free 7-class course I've shared online and workshops I've run open to the community at the Faculty of Exact Sciences (UBA). Agustín Martínez is a developer and researcher at the Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA), and the creator of Diálogo, a programming environment for children built in Cuis Smalltalk. He presented a paper on Diálogo at the Onward! track of OOPSLA, and has given public talks at Nerdearla, Argentina's largest tech community event. This will be an online meeting. If you'd like to join us, please sign up in advance on the meeting's Meetup page ( https://www.meetup.com/ukstug/events/314323562/ ) to receive the meeting details.
