IWST’25 CFP Reminder
by Guillermo Polito March 25, 2025

March 25, 2025

IWST is the International Workshop on Smalltalk Technologies. The goal of the workshop is to create a forum around contributions and experiences in building or using technologies related to Smalltalk. While the maturity of presented ideas and results is not crucial, their presentation is expected to trigger discussion and exchange of ideas. The topics of your paper can be on all aspects of Smalltalk, theoretical as well as practical. Authors are invited to submit research articles or industrial papers. This year we will again have two different tracks: Two-Round Paper Submission. As in the previous year, submission will be in two rounds: Extended abstracts are submitted to present at the conference Later, full/short papers are submitted for proceedings publications Presenting Previously Published Works. We also invite authors of contributions related to IWST's topics, accepted for publication in Journals and Proceedings of top-rated international conferences within the previous 2 years, to submit an abstract and present their published results to the IWST workshop collocated with ESUG. Authors will be invited to present their paper after checking that the submission meets the above criteria. Having the submissions already reviewed and accepted by the peers, they will not be reviewed again for technical content. Important Dates Extended abstract submission deadline: March 31st, 2025 AoE Already Published Papers Abstract submission deadline: March 31st, 2025 AoE Extended abstract notification deadline: April 7th, 2025 AoE Already Published Papers Abstract notifications: April 10th, 2025 AoE Full/short paper submission deadline: May 19th, 2025 AoE Workshop: July 1-4, 2025 Best regards, IWST team

Craig Latta - Livecoding Language Models: AI Context in Live Environments - 26 March 2025
by UK Smalltalk March 17, 2025

March 17, 2025

For our March meeting, Craig Latta will show how to leverage AI language models in a livecoding environment. Using a tool creates context for complimentary tools. For example, selecting an object in a Smalltalk inspector creates useful context for browsing the class of that object. This is a potent idea in an integrated development environment, where multiple tools operate on related information. The extensive context in a live environment enables powerful collaboration with contemporary AI language models. Tools built from that collaboration could greatly augment human capability. Craig Latta ( https://thiscontext.com/author/ccrraaiigg/ ) will show some foundations for them, and suggest ways of easing their construction through the systematic description of existing tool functionality. For a preview, please see Craig's blog at thiscontext.com ( http://thiscontext.com/ ). Craig Latta is a research computer scientist in Berkeley and Amsterdam, with interests including livecoding, music performance, and interactive visualization. The discovery of a mysteriously-placed Blue Book at university led to stints at several exploratory labs, and a pursuit of improvisation wherever code is found. His current work focuses on polyglot computing with WebAssembly, the novel compiler framework Epigram, and human augmentation through AI. This will be an online meeting from home. If you'd like to join us, please sign up in advance on the meeting's Meetup page ( https://www.meetup.com/ukstug/events/305761372/ ) to receive the meeting details. Don’t forget to bring your laptop and drinks!

UK Smalltalk User Group meeting: Richard Ronteltap - SmallJS - 26 February 2025
by UK Smalltalk Feb. 26, 2025

Feb. 26, 2025

For our February 2025 presentation, Richard Ronteltap will present his SmallJS project. SmallJS ( https://small-js.org/Home/Home.html ) is a free and open source implementation of the elegant and powerful Smalltalk-80 (ST) language. It compiles to JavaScript (JS) that runs in modern browsers or in Node.js. SmallJS is file based, not image based, so you can develop in your favorite IDE. The default setup is for Visual Studio Code, with ST syntax coloring and step debugging! You code separately from the SmallJS base libraries (image) and only the parts you use are imported automatically when running your app. SmallJS is fully object oriented, so customizable on every level. For usability, ST class and method names are kept mostly equal to their familiar JS counterparts. JS libraries already encapsulated in ST are: Browsers: Document, Window, HTML elements, events, CSS, streams. Node.js: HTTP server, Express, 4 databases, files. SmallJS is mostly intended for use by JS devs that want a nicer language to work in. But it can also be used by existing ST devs that are willing to learn a new ST framework that can directly run in browsers and can seamlessly access the powerful Node.js ecosystem, without the need for bridges between overlapping frameworks. Richard ( https://github.com/FunctionPoint ) studied Computer Science at the University of Amsterdam (UvA), where he used used Smalltalk-80 to write a query optimizer for a prototype OODBMS. He currently works in IT / Software Management within the IT department of the UvA. This will be an online meeting from home. If you'd like to join us, please sign up in advance on the meeting's Meetup page ( https://www.meetup.com/ukstug/events/305761370/ ) to receive the meeting details. Don’t forget to bring your laptop and drinks!

Pharo Association 2024 Review
by tesonep＠gmail.com Feb. 5, 2025

Feb. 5, 2025

Dear Pharo Association members, Pharoers and Smalltalkers from all over the world We are writing you to thank you again for your support of the Pharo Association. With your help, we are able to perform a lot of activities to increase the impact of Pharo, enlarge its community and have a better programming life for everyone. For the people who are not members of the association, we take the opportunity to tell you all the accomplishments of the association last year and invite you to participate in any of the forms our association provides. We want to profit this time of the year to tell you the most important actions that the association has supported the last years. - *Infrastructure for Pharo: *as an association, we support the maintenance of the infrastructure used by Pharo. We provided the funds for the hosting of Pharo services (website, file server, mailing lists) and domains. Most of the services that we daily use are supported by your help. Thanks for allowing the community to use the Pharo Launcher or getting an image from ZeroConf. - *Conference Sponsoring:* we all love to go to nice conferences and much more if there is Pharo-related content on it. This year as it is tradition we supported the *ESUG 2024 *conference. Having a place to interchange and to publish all the advances in Pharo is key to its development. - *Summer School: *With the objective of extending the Pharo community, in 2024, we sponsored a summer school at Split, Croatia about advanced object-oriented design with Pharo. Due to the nice reception and results, this year we are again sponsoring a summer school in February at Montpellier. - *Pharo Music: *Smalltalk has been always a language close to the arts, and Pharo is not an exception. This year, we heavily sponsored the development of Phausto, Coypu and CoypuIDE. *Phausto <https://github.com/lucretiomsp/phausto>* is a library and API that allows to use the FAUST compiler and its libraries (Functional Audio Stream) inside Pharo. *Coypu <https://github.com/lucretiomsp/Coypu>* is a package with methods and classes for Pharo designed for programming music on-the-fly, and it has its *IDE <https://github.com/pharo-graphics/CoypuIDE>* developed in Bloc. This tools has been presented in numerous technical and musical conferences, and in all of them they have generated a lot of attention and interest. We are much than happy with the results we are obtaining. - *Student Sponsoring:* we sponsored the access of students using Pharo to Summer Schools and visits to labs. We sponsored also the food and drinks of small meetings where students can learn and play with Pharo. This sponsoring is particularly important because often the labs are not allowed to pay trips of students, limiting the access to international students. Because of that, we sponsored students from Argentina (2), Serbia, Madagascar (3), Chile, and Bolivia. Without your support we would not be able to plant Pharo seeds all over the world. Your help is base to increase the community and to help all the people interested in Pharo. - *Book Sponsoring: *During last year, we have sponsored the write of 4 new books about Pharo. These books covers subjects for newcomers and experts, going from the style of code, testing and UI creation. All the books are available to the community (*https://books.pharo.org/ <https://books.pharo.org/>*) and even you can get a physical copy. We consider that we need to provide the material to let all the people interested to grow in their Pharo experience. We want to thank you again for your support as all the support we are getting are from our members. We remember you that you can renew or increase your subscription at *https://association.pharo.org <https://association.pharo.org/>*. Your support is really important for us because it enables us to do actions that would be almost impossible to do. Finally we remember you that we are always open to listen your opinions and suggestions, and to receive requests for sponsoring or support at %2Aassociation(a)pharo.org <association(a)pharo.org>*. Sorry if you have got this mails from different channels. Thank you so much again, and we desired you and excellent new year! *Pharo Association*

About String and Symbol equality
by stephane ducasse Feb. 2, 2025

Feb. 2, 2025

Hello people In Pharo (following Squeak tradition) a string is equals to its symbol representation. e.g. ’tintin’ = #tintin > true In other Smalltalk dialects this is not the case. We have been working (sponsored by Lifeware) to support both semantics (yes this is a kind of daunting task and it can raise bugs). Our objective is to help people make business with Pharo. So “simple” cross compatibility is something that we consider e.g. to deploy applications in Gemstone for example. (We would love to have a Pharo compiler working on Gemstone generating Gemstone VM bytecodes this is why we love the work of James Foster but this is another story). So since we are pragmatic people we could be convinced that the semantics of Pharo is not good :) and that by default we should use the semantics of GS or VW. The first step is to be able to choose which one to use within Pharo and be able to switch. We are nearly there for Pharo 13. The second step is to get a nice default. And we need the help of the community for this. Do you have any advice, arguments for and against any of the two choices that could be put on the table to influence our decisions for Pharo 14. So let us know :) Stef on the behalf of the Pharo consortium. Stéphane Ducasse http://stephane.ducasse.free.fr 06 30 93 66 73 "If you knew today was your last day on earth, what would you do differently? ....ESPECIALLY if, by doing something different, today might not be your last day on earth.” Calvin & Hobbes
