Sept. 23, 2010

Germán Leiva was accepted in Google Summer of Code 2010 and developed a Namespaces implementation for Pharo Smalltalk. A video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4I7fSVNX2A is based on his presentation at ESUG in Barcelona last week. You can get the code at http://www.squeaksource.com/Environments.html. James Foster

Re: [Esug-list] Is Cincom slowly killing Visual Smalltalk Enterprice
by Steven Kelly Sept. 23, 2010

If you are continuing to use VSE, please reply to the list with at least a simple "Yes". I have no interest in VSE, but Henrik has asked twice and got no replies (on this list), so let's at least help reduce a fellow Smalltalker's frustration. Cheers, Steve From: esug-list-bounces(a)lists.esug.org [mailto:esug-list-bounces@lists.esug.org] On Behalf Of Henrik Høyer Sent: 7. syyskuuta 2010 22:04 To: The general-purpose Squeak developers list; ESUG Mailing list Subject: Re: [Esug-list] Is Cincom slowly killing Visual Smalltalk Enterprice Dear all >From the reactions to my post, I fear that people might have misunderstood me. Bear in mind, that I am not a native English speaker - though my language might sound harsh and offensive, I do have the best intensions. The subject of the original post should perhaps have been: "Is Cincom slowly killing Visual Smalltalk Enterprise *customers*". Who shot VSE a long time ago is another discussion. As are the discussion of how/whether one could/should port the applications to other Smalltalk dialects. My focus is entirely on how the current VSE users can extend the life of their applications on the VSE platform. Even though development on VSE stopped more than 10 years ago, the applications are still running today on current operating system versions and with on-par performance. Part of VSE is closed source; The VM, the compiler and several other stuff. Though clever hacking/patching bugs in these closed parts of VSE have been fixes by the community since the official development stopped. But Cincom (who has the exclusive rights to make money from supporting the product) has now unleashed its lawyers, and are threatening some of the most active people in the community. The amount of "lawyer muscle" behind the threats are actually keeping people from even replying to this post. I did have a deep respect for Cincom; they have done a great job for the Smalltalk community. I don't know where in their organization the "money matters more than ethics" policy is in action. It is not among the Smalltalk people we all know, but the ones who are pulling the strings are in fact doing a lot of damage to their corporate image. I know that some Cincom employees have commented on my post, but I still have had no answers to the main question: Are Cincom willing to donate/sell their "exclusive exploratory rights to the VSE product"? Please note: The question is not about the IP. It is only about the rights that Cincom holds, oh and by the way; are Cincom willing to disclose the contact they have with Seagull regarding these rights? Re: [Esug-list] [Pharo-project] ESUG actions (was: Best Spreading Smalltalk Actions)

:) This is fun because one of the board member raised the question just before this remark. We are not sure that rebranding is good but so far I like your slogan. And we welcome any smalltalker. The goals of esug are simple (you can see that in the first talk of esug and also the one of serge about future actions) - create energy in the community (via the conf via new user groups) - support open-source development - support business in Smalltalk - push/help teacher teaching Smalltalk - bring open-source and business together (check my last talk at Barcelona - we need strong vendors and strong open-source) ESUG never took into account geographic perspective, we sent books all over the world in the past. And student volunteers came from everywhere :) Stef > > I think ESUG has been an outstanding success for Smalltalk globally and > therefore deserves to be called The Smalltalk Users Group. TSUG. Best Spreading Smalltalk Actions
by Noury Bouraqadi Sept. 22, 2010

Although the technology is important, spreading the word is also of great value to the Smalltalk community. This is why the ESUG board decided to distinguish two people for their actions on this-level: -Damien Cassou for Squeak-dev: an initiative which makes developers life easier by setting a ready to use image including best available tools. -Laurent Laffont for Pharocast: quality screencasts that illustrates various facets of http://pharocasts.blogspot.com/ Congratulations Damien and Laurent! ESUG actions (was: Best Spreading Smalltalk Actions)
by Noury Bouraqadi Sept. 21, 2010

Sept. 21, 2010

Hi, ESUG is willing to support all actions everywhere. The "E" of ESUG can also be interpreted as "Earth-wide" :-) In places where there are Smalltalk groups we help them (sponsoring). Otherwise we push their creation. If you have a project that might help the Smalltalk community in someway (free software project, writing books, organizing an event, ...), you are eligible to ESUG support. Just submit your proposal to the ESUG board (board(a)esug.org) and you'll get quickly an answer.
