Lightning talk video
by Martin McClure Sept. 20, 2012

Sept. 20, 2012

Some of you saw at ESUG a video of the lightning talk I gave at STIC on subnormal floating point numbers. I got one request for a link to it, and figured others might want to waste seven minutes being mathematically entertained, so here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROtC1KedVh8 Regards, -Martin

_____________________________________________________________________________ Call for Papers Open Source Developer Conference in France (OSDC.fr) Open World Forum, Paris, October 12th & 13th, 2012 http://osdc.fr/ _____________________________________________________________________________ The goal of OSDC.fr is to gather developers from various communities around groundbreaking technologies in the world of computer programming. After two editions on our own, we are now working together with the Open World Forum since 2011 to bring you an improved experience. For the 4th edition of this conference in France, we want to unite the communities around open source development in all the free and open source languages, like Perl, Python, Ruby, PHP, Smalltalk and many more. The main goal is to learn by discovering new tricks in new languages: there is often a lot to learn by tackling concepts and techniques not linked to a particular programming language. To this end, we invite you to join us at OSDC.fr, either by submitting a talk, or simply by attending the conference, which will take place on the 12th and 13th October 2012, during the Open World Forum, at Eurosites George V, Paris. Entrance is free of charge. Talks can last 25 or 45 minutes. There will also be a lightning talks session, with a 5-minute limit on each talk. Here is a non-exhaustive list of possible subjects: - themes related to programming languages such as Perl, PHP, Python, Ruby, Erlang, JavaScript, node.js, Lua, Scala, Clojure, Groovy, Haskell, C, C++, Smalltalk, Java, etc. - dynamic compilation - interpreters and virtual machines (Parrot, JVM, CLR, etc) - development tools - development best practices - programming experience feedback - code frameworks and libraries - innovative languages and their implementation - software maintenance - integrating different languages in the same project - educational methods Conference site: » http://osdc.fr/2012/ Submit a talk proposal: » http://osdc.fr/2012/newtalk Important dates: * Deadline for submitting a talk September 25th, 2012 * Final schedule October 1st, 2012 * OSDC.fr conference October 12th & 13th, 2012 -- Damien Cassou http://damiencassou.seasidehosting.st "Lambdas are relegated to relative obscurity until Java makes them popular by not having them." Patent, this will probably interest SMEs in Europe.
by Stéphane Ducasse Sept. 3, 2012

Sept. 3, 2012

>> We are contacting Nuxeo SAS as a former supporter of the >> "Economic Majority" campaign (http://economic-majority.com/) launched >> by the FFII regarding a legislative project which tried to legalise >> software patents in the EU. >> >> Support from enterprises has repeatedly been decisive for our work, as >> exemplified by the successful defusing of the software patent directive >> in 2005. Although this has prevented software patents from being >> enforceable in Europe, the European Patent Office (EPO) is still >> granting such patents. >> >> As soon as the Parliament returns after the summer break, Members of the >> European Parliament will debate on a draft regulation about a unitary >> patent and on a draft international agreement setting up a unified >> patent court. But this project amounts to rubber stamp EPO's practices >> of granting software patents, which would be enforceable before a court >> that is likely to follow EPO's case law. >> >> In a debate where the position of patent attorneys and judges is yet the >> only one to be heard, we wish to ask for your involvement to highlight >> the damage the current project would cause to European ICT enterprises. >> >> Please let us know by answering this mail whether Nuxeo SAS >> would accept to publicly support the resolution below. >> >> For more information on the unitary patent, please see the dedicated >> website: http://www.unitary-patent.eu >> >> Yours sincerely, >> >> Benjamin Henrion, FFII president

Xtreams (and other cross-platform projects)
by DeNigris Sean Sept. 1, 2012

Sept. 1, 2012

I'm posting this to squeak-dev, pharo dev, and esug, but it'd be great to keep discussion in one place, like the esug list, or even better, the issue link below if appropriate... At ESUG, Martin Kobetic, Dale Henrich, and I worked on some key pieces to port and maintain cross-platform projects via github. By adapting Filetree to convert between VW namespaces and class name prefixes, we: 1. loaded Xtreams from squeaksource 2. via a Filetree repo, pushed it to github in a directory structure identical to that of the VW branch 3. again via Filetree, loaded the pushed version into another Pharo image, where all the tests passed. This is an initial proof-of-concept (some things are hard-coded, conditional halts left as sanity checks, etc.), but it shows that it is possible. Some limitations: * only one level of namespace is supported * source code is not transformed More details can be found at https://github.com/dalehenrich/filetree/issues/59 Cheers, Sean
