PhD Position on Dynamic Reflective Language Integration with FPGAs for Robotic Applications
by jannik laval Jan. 20, 2014

Jan. 20, 2014

The position is available now. Interested candidates may apply as soon as possible. *Title:* Ph.D. Student Position on Dynamic Reflective Language Integration with FPGAs for Robotic Applications *Location:* Mines de Douai and ENSTA Brest (France) *Advisor and contacts:* Noury Bouraqadi (noury.bouraqadi(a)mines-douai.fr) Luc Fabresse (luc.fabresse(a)mines-douai.fr) Loïc Lagadec (loic.lagadec(a)ensta-bretagne.fr) Jannik Laval (jannik.laval(a)mines-douai.fr) *Profile:* the candidate must must hold a recent Master of Science degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering and must have solid skills in dynamic reflective language (Smalltalk). *Description of the work:* The goal of this PhD is to study Smalltalk integration with FPGAs for robotic applications. This integration will enable us get the best from both worlds. Developers are provided with a high-level dynamic reflective language (Smalltalk) for building and debugging their applications. Still, we can have high performances by projecting part of the programs into FPGAs. These reconfigurable hardware chips can achieve performance faster than C programs, while consuming much less energy. The work to do can decompose into the following tasks: -Build reference robotic applications fully in Pharo Smalltalk using actual robots (see http://car.mines-douai.fr/robots/) -Analyze these applications to identify critical parts to project on FPGAs to significantly increase performances (speed, energy) -Do the actual projection to FPGA and evaluate performances of the transformed applications -Generalize the approach and define a methodology for turning Smalltalk code into FPGA -Propose a solution to automate the methodology The Ph.D student will receive a grant which net amount is approximately 1420 euros per month for 3 years (36 months). He will be co-supervised by Loïc Lagadec from the ENSTA-Bretagne (Lab-STICC, Brest) and Jannik Laval, Luc Fabresse and Noury Bouraqadi from Ecole des Mines de Douai (CAR, http://car.mines-douai.fr/) The first 18th month will be spent in Douai (Lille area), while the last half of the PhD will be spent in Brest. However, during the full 3 years, there will be a strong interaction with co-supervisers from both labs. *Bibliography:* -A Robust Layered Control System For A Mobile Robot. R. Brooks. Tenured Researcher Positions at INRIA ======================== The yearly competition for Inria research positions started. (Deadline: Feb 14th) RMoD is looking for researchers to apply for joining our team at Lille/France with permanent (tenured) positions: CR2 "Young graduate scientist" http://www.inria.fr/en/institute/recruitment/offers/young-graduate-scientis… - a doctorate (or equivalent degree) - formally no other research experience required, in practice the competition is very hard and a strong academic CV is needed on a level that requires, besides a very good PhD, at least1-2 years of post-doctoral research. CR1 "Young experienced scientist" http://www.inria.fr/en/institute/recruitment/offers/senior-researcher/ - a doctorate (or equivalent degree) - 4 years of research experience. - very strong academic CV. DR2 "Senior researcher" http://www.inria.fr/en/institute/recruitment/offers/senior-researcher/ - a doctorate (or equivalent degree) - at least 8 years experience in research - very strong academic CV. The positions are tenured after a probation period of 12 Months. Duties --------- -> Research (No teaching) -> Help manage the Research Group. -> Be involved with the self-governance of the Inria Lab and Inria as a whole. -> Guide PhD Students (And therefore get a french habilitation to be able to formally supervise PhD students) -> Help acquiring additional funds for PhD Students, Postdocs and Engineers -> Transfer of research results to the real world. (this means: making things real is valued. Not just paper writing) About Lille and Inria: --------------------------- -> Lille is located in the north of france. (one hour from Paris, 1h20 from London, 35 min from Brussels, by train) -> French food, combined with good Belgium beer. -> RMoD: http://rmod.lille.inria.fr -> INRIA Lille: http://www.inria.fr/lille/ -> INRIA in General: http://www.inria.fr/en/institute/inria-in-brief/key-figures -> Lille: - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lille - http://wikitravel.org/en/Lille Interested? Weekly Pharo blog is out :)
by Stéphane Ducasse Jan. 19, 2014

Jan. 19, 2014

Hi guys I started a blog http://association.pharo.org/web/weekly Why yet another blog? I got exhausted, sick, and I had to stop reading mails and other computer activities. Then after a couple of weeks (well I’m addict so these are days) not reading mails about Pharo I realise that there is no condensed information where you are not forced to read hundreds of mails to know what is happening. Since I need to cure myself and relax, I decided that I will batch my Pharo email reading (Yes I can) and I will extract blog entries because emails vanished under their own stream. They will not be polished but you will find information about our crazy moving fast community. And I hope that you will enjoy it. Stéphane http://stephane.ducassse.free.fr

Re: [Esug-list] ESUG @ Cambridge needs you
by John O'Keefe Jan. 16, 2014

Jan. 16, 2014

Tudor asked in late December if there was any information on the dates for ESUG 2014. Since the organizing committee is probably still being formed, I'm not surprised that there was no answer. So I will just ask that as soon as someone knows about the dates, please post that information since travel plans need to be made. Thanks, John John O'Keefe [|], CTO/Principal Smalltalk Architect, Instantiations Inc.

[HELP] Phratch translation
by jannik.laval Jan. 16, 2014

Jan. 16, 2014

Dear smalltalkers, phratchers and everybody interested to help Phratch development. We need you as an international community. Phratch needs your help to be multilingual. The most of work is already done, It is based on the Scratch work (Thank you for all the supported languages). Now, as Phratch has a lot of new features, we need to translate each of these new features. For each of the following languages (ar, bg, ca, cs, da, de, el, es, et, eu, fa, fi, fr_CA, gl, he, hr, ht, hu, id, is, it, ja_hira, ja, kn, ko, lt, mk, mn, mr, ms, ne, nl, no, pl, pt_br, pt, ro, ru, rw, sk, sl, sv, th, tr, uk, vi, zh_cn, zh_tw), we need to complete the lines available in the phratch issue tracker (https://code.google.com/p/phratch/issues/detail?id=120) You can post your work as a comment or send me a mail, I will then integrate it in Phratch. For each expression there is a msgid in english, that should not be changed. Then, there is a msgstr that should be complete in the specific language. All elements in the $$ (like $Number$) are variables, they should not be changed but they have to be integrated in your translation. For example, in french: === msgid "replace costume $Number$ with $NewCostume$" msgstr "remplacer le costume $Number$ avec $NewCostume$" === There is less than 130 small expressions. It is 1 or 2 hours of work, and it helps us a lot. Thank you for your help. Cheers, Jannik

Hi Joseph, Great, I look forward to meeting you again! It is the same restaurant. Maybe I should have asked for ideas first. Let's discuss on monday where we could have the next one at a quieter place in the area.
