The topics of your paper can be on all aspect of Smalltalk, theoretical as well as practical. Participants are invited to submit research articles or industrial papers. This year we want to open two different tracks: one research track and one industrial track with less scientific constraints. We expect papers of three kinds: Short position papers describing emerging ideas Long research papers with deeper description of experiments and of research results. Industrial papers with presentation of real and innovative Smalltalk applications; this kind of paper should enlighten why Smalltalk is really appropriate for your application. We thank Lam Research Corporation for its financial contribution that makes it possible a price for the three best papers: 1000 USD for first place, 600 USD for second place and 400 USD for third place. The ranking will be decided by the program committee during the review process. The awards will be given during the ESUG conference social event. The Best Paper Award will take place only with a minimum of six submissions. Any news on ESUG 2014 Accomodation?

Hi, The ESUG conference site [1] says: We have reserved accommodation in Trinity Hall's Wichfield site for student volunteers and attendees, which will be available when the registration system goes online. The reservation system is online - but I didn't see any pointers to reservations of the rooms in Trinity Hall. What's my mistake? Pharo 3.0 Released!

Dear World, Pharo 3.0 (http://www.pharo.org) is here. The past year seemed short as we got busy building more than usual. Many things have changed in Pharo. Here are the highlights: - The new modular Opal compiler is now the default compiler used in the system. - The Athens vector graphics canvas is now integrated and it supports Cairo rendering on all platforms. - Many tools have been rewritten using Spec, a new framework for building user interfaces. - Versionner and Kommiter are two of the new development tools. - RPackage, a new package mechanism got enhanced with tags and is fully integrated in the system. - The debugger model was rewritten to become modular, the inspector received a bump to support multiple views, and the Nautilus code browser supports tags, search and lot more improvements. - Morphic has seen many cleanings and improvements and the visual theme has been revamped. These are just the more prominent highlights, but the details are just as important. We have closed 2364 issues in Pharo 3 (compared with 1727 issues in Pharo 2). Just take a look at the code city of Pharo (built with Pharo for Pharo). Every building is a class, and the red bricks represent the modified methods in Pharo 3. Many things are changing but the system gets more stable. Moving from Pharo 2 to Pharo 3 is almost a matter of just loading the code. Remember that Pharo is your platform. Hello, I am Arnaud Jean-Baptiste, I am in Post-doc in Rmod team, my post-doc finishes in December. And I am looking for a job position. My Experience: Since 5 years, I am in the Rmod team working on Pharo language: First I conducted a PhD focused on how to integrate new language features (I reified references), to enforce security policy. During my PhD, I acquired a deep knowledge of the Pharo virtual machine, language design and understanding complexe legacy software (when I began a PhD there are no correct documentation to rebuild the VM in a clean way). My PhD can be found on my website: http://jeanbaptiste-arnaud.eu/phd/ During my Post-doc, I parsed python language using moose for extract security information rely to static analysis. In addition, I worked 6 months with Synectique (software quality company focus on legacy langage), my job was to parse and extract data from Cobol language to provide visualisation (more detail can be found: http://jeanbaptiste-arnaud.eu/cobol/) In parallele I cultivate interrest on low level features, I am the maintainer the NBOpenGL implementation and provide some tutorial and simple tool (texture importer, mpeg renderer, etc.). I am the actual developer and maintainer of the RaspberryPi PharoVM project: (https://ci.inria.fr/pharo-contribution/view/ARM/) I began to introduce FFI for ARM. I am beginning to revive the project of golubovsky, to generate android version based on the last interpreter. Other projects or more fun projects: - Opal compiler, at beginning of my PhD I was developer on the Opal project: - Storm, a binding of a 2D physical engine (focus for game), I am contributor on the project of Esteban Lorenzano, - Gameboy, I began to do from scratch a gameboy emulator (try to be closest possible of the hardware), on Pharo based on the documentation found on: http://gbdev.gg8.se/wiki/articles/Main_Page, It is fun and I made great advance (graphic/engine/memory/processor ok, need to finish material binding interrupt and debug), but sadly I do not have time anymore. Obviously, I am a Pharo contributor. James Robertson

For those who haven't heard, James Robertson passed away suddenly on Thursday April 14, 2014. James was a power house of information for Smalltalk and worked furiously through the years to promote it through his blog and podcasts. James was an employee of ParcPlace through the ParcPlace/Digitalk merger and through the move to Cincom. When he left CIncom in 2010, he became an independent contractor. He was always an early adopter of technology. He jumped into the blog scene when it wasn't yet a scene and started recording podcasts when podcasts were still new. Over the years, he recorded thousands of podcasts, screencasts, videos of conference talks and interviews making them accessible to everyone by podcast channels, youtube and through his blog. Congratulation Doru, Tudor Gîrba

Dear colleges and friends, It is a great pleasure for me to send this email. A couple of days ago AITO officially announced that the junior prize of the AITO Dahl-Nygaard Prize Winners is given to Doru, Tudor Gîrba. The award will be given at the ECOOP conference, this year, in Uppsala, Sweden. AITO is the non-profit organization who is behind ECOOP. The prestigious Dahl-Nygaard award is given to "individuals that have made significant technical contributions to the field of Object-Orientation”. ECOOP is the high-caliber European conference on object-orientation. The European version of OOPSLA. I have known Doru for year, when we were doing our PhD in Bern under the supervision of Stéphane Ducasse and Oscar Nierstrasz. Doru’s work and ideas have had a great impact on the Pharo and Smalltalk community. Doru is member of the Pharo board. Doru authored Glamour, GTToolKit and many more applications. Doru is not only a great researcher, a great engineer or a great speaker. He is also a great leader. Doru is the main architect of the Moose effort, and a great coordinator in the Moose and Pharo communities. Doru authored Humane Assessment, "the method for making software engineering decisions". Doru’s work has had a great impact on my personal work. Roassal is an extension of the ideas first presented in Mondrian, which was first authored by Doru and his student around 2005. Without Doru, Moose would not be as it is now. Doru, we are happy to have you with us! This international recognition will drag up all of us.
