My *personal* take on this is is that we can migrate easily the catalog, without deprecating it: - the catalog repositories will stay alive as read-only, so it will be no problem to access old catalog entries (unless they depend on private projects, but that would be odd) - a low-energy solution for this is to migrate these repositories to squeaksource3. This should be mostly straight-forward. - a high-energy solution is to rethink the catalog. I know there have been some community efforts from Christophe Demarey for example, Esteban has also interesting ideas on how to attack this. [ANN] SmalltalkHub Deprecation Notice
by Guillermo Polito April 3, 2020

April 3, 2020

SmalltalkHub Deprecation Notice SmalltalkHub is now getting old and it is time to deprecate it. We plan to replace it by a static file server during 2020. The public data will still be readable and consumable from monticello clients, but modifications will not be allowed in the near future. SmalltalkHub users should move their projects to git repositories or other monticello repository services. What is changing? If you currently host a project in SmalltalkHub, you should migrate your projects to another platform as soon as possible. If you depend on a project hosted on SmalltalkHub, you should contact the owner of that project to schedule a migration. If you have documentation or tutorials using SmalltalkHub, we recommend to update those after a migration. An archive of all public projects in SmalltalkHub will be made available in read-only mode. This archive will be readable through monticello clients for compatibility reasons. Private projects, due to privacy reasons, will not be published in the public archive and will be removed to protect their owners. Why are RMoD and Inria making this change? SmalltalkHub has finished its cycle. The arrival of git integration in the past years caused the move of most users in the Pharo community to git hosting services. They now use exclusively other platforms. Furthermore, RMoD and Inria lack the manpower to properly maintain the SmalltalkHub service and keep it up to date. Smalltalkhub has no added value compared to other code source hosting platforms. How much time do I have to adapt to this change? The SmalltalkHub deprecation will follow the next timetable: Monday 04 of may 2020: SmalltalkHub will be read-only. Creation of new users and projects will be forbidden. New commits will be rejected. All existing users, projects (public and private) and their commits will remain available and visible, but their settings will become read-only. Monday 02 of november 2020: SmalltalkHub will be migrated to a static file server archive. Private projects and their commits will not be available anymore. The RMoD team and Inria plan to keep the static file server alive for, at least, 5 years from the date of its creation. What will happen if I do nothing? Your public projects will become read-only and you will not be able to commit anymore. Your private projects will become unavailable. What alternatives do I have? Those wanting to keep using monticello can migrate their projects to other monticello hostings such as http://squeaksource.com <http://squeaksource.com/> or http://ss3.gemstone.com <http://ss3.gemstone.com/> Those wanting to migrate to git, Peter Uhnak’s git migration tool (https://github.com/peteruhnak/git-migration <https://github.com/peteruhnak/git-migration>) automates monticello to git migration in tonel format. Cheers, Guille on behalf of the RMoD team

destructDo:
by Christian Haider March 30, 2020

March 30, 2020

Hi, I am using a nice little method #destructDo: for a while now and it feels good. In VisualWorks: SequenceableCollection>>destructDo: aBlock "Evaluate aBlock with the receiver's elements as parameters. aBlock takes its arguments from the receiver. 'ok' #(1 2 3) destructDo: [:a :b :c | a + b + c] #(1 2 3) destructDo: [:a :b | a + b] #(1 2 3) destructDo: [:a | a] #(1 2 3) destructDo: [42] 'not ok' #(1 2 3) destructDo: [:a :b :c :d | a + b + c + d] " ^aBlock cullWithArguments: self asArray In Amber: SequenceableCollection>>destructDo: aBlock ^aBlock valueWithPossibleArguments: self In Pharo and other dialects, I don't know, but should be as easy. For example you can do (('2020-03-28' tokensBasedOn: $-) collect: #asNumber) destructDo: [:year :month :day | Date newDay: day monthNumber: month year: year] I like that the block is not the receiver (like with #valueWithArguments or #cullWithArguments), but the last argument. Now the questions: * I am sure that others came up with this. Anybody knows? * What are you using for this pattern? * I don't really like the name, but haven't found anything better yet. Maybe #destructedDo: or just #destructed: or: #withPartsDo:. maybe something shorter? Ideas? * What are you thinking about this? Happy hacking, Christian

[ANN] CoViD-19 Charts prototype
by Christian Haider March 20, 2020

March 20, 2020

Hi all, the corona virus is a bummer and it keeps me occupied more than is good for me, I guess. Since I am unhappy with some infos on the web (some are really nice!), because I want to see different numbers and charts. So, I used the opportunity to try out Amber for real. Here it is: https://covidcrt.uber.space It is still bare and simple, but here I can get a better picture of the development of this crisis. Especially, I wanted to see how the case increases develops (how fast is the increase increasing). I look at Italy, Germany and especially, the US. This is scary! >From today until Sunday, there will be a virtual hackaton from the German government [1]. I want to participate and will work on this. Anybody interested? You can apply until 14 o'clock GMT. (And yes, I know that it is stupid that Germany does it on its own, but better than nothing!). Technicalities (for people who want to play with the source): Everything is open and under MIT licence. 1. There is a small VisualWorks program loading the data from the John-Hopkins-University, transforming them and saving the data as JSON. The package is [CoViD19] in the public store. 2. The app is in Amber Smalltalk and the html is done with Silk. Silk is very exciting and makes web programming fun again. I am completely enthusiastic about it :-) ! Unfortunately, setting up the development environment is a bit complicated, because I issued a pull request[2] for an addition to Silk which is not incorporated yet. Therefore, after you did all the normal setup, you need to replace the Silk source files in ./node_modules\@ambers\silk\src with the files in [3]. Also, I disabled my dev buttons in the app. To open Helios, the browser, you have to enter require('amber/helpers').popupHelios() in the browser console of the dev tools. Happy hacking and good luck to everybody, Christian [1] https://wirvsvirushackathon.org/ [2] https://lolg.it/herby/silk/pulls/11 [3] https://covidcrt.uber.space/Silk.zip
