Dear All, First, I hope your family and yourself are all safe. At Esug last year, we sent a call for participation in an experiment about programming in augmented reality. Many of you participated and we deeply thank you for this. Cancelling ESUG 2020 :(

Dear happy smalltalking people, After several analyses the board in concertation with the local organisers decided to cancel ESUG in 2020. It was not an easy decision but we believe it has to be taken. We plan to organise it next year in the same place. For IWST the PC chair will announce some dates because we would like to run it. Official Pharo consortium Call. Pharo needs you: Perfect time to join

Dear Pharo users, lovers, businessers Context ********* You may not know it clearly but the Pharo consortium succeeds to pay one full time engineer: Esteban Lorenzano. Due to legal concerns with the Inria foundation effort, Inria converted the position of Esteban into a permanent position. It was a great deal because it secures Esteban. Now based on contracts between the consortium and Lifeware ( https://www.lifeware.ch <https://www.lifeware.ch/> ) and Schmidt (http://bauing-schmidt.de <http://bauing-schmidt.de/>) the consortium is able to pay another engineer: Pablo Tesone until April 2021. All this was announced at ESUG 2019 but not all of you may have known it. <Mini news> * The consortium has been working to get Pharo in the database of the CNRS platforms (CNRS is a huge research organisation in France covering all research fields. Guillermo Polito has a permanent position from CNRS allocated to the Lille University Lab and we want to convince the lab that having Guille working on Pharo is the best ROI that they can make). * We also are pursing a process to be recognized by the University of Lille for the same reason. We are also working to get PharoPro out of the ground but this is another story. * All these efforts in communication are done to secure people position. We have got many new academic members. Some should be announced soon. </mini news> Now THE announce. ************************* During the last consortium meeting, we learned that David Margery (the Inria software manager that is managing around 10 ofconsortiums for Inria) wants to propose to Inria to allocate another permanent position to Pharo even if the consortium does not raise two full salaries. This will secure the effort of the consortium for the coming years. We were excited by the news because such positions are rare and lifelong! David is building a case to defend his proposal: * first the pharo consortium is in a good shape - thank you all * second, Inria is interested to "assess if Pharo is used” David told us that having more industrial partners (even first entry ones) will really help our case: the fact that members are willing to pay to secure the future of Pharo is the key indicator, the amount paid being only secondary. Remember that the first membership fee is at 1K Euros. Therefore the consortium is sending an official call. If you hesitated to join the consortium this is clearly the moment. Your money will be multiplied. [ANN] Cheer for THE Medusa - the single Smalltalk based battle snake

Hi lists, you may recall a mention of Battlesnake in these forums before. Today, the Battlesnake team is holding an online tournament that you can watch live on Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/battlesnakeofficial <https://www.twitch.tv/battlesnakeofficial>. My entry THE Medusa is the only Smalltalk-based battlesnake in the competition. It’s listed in the Group D of the Veteran division. Not sure when it’s going be on - currently the Rookie division is playing. I hope you can join, watch, have some fun, get inspired to write and enter your own Smalltalk based snakes for future competition (the arenas are open year-round so you have plenty of time to test your snakes), and if you can, donate a small amount to Food Banks Canada in support of families affected by COVID-19. Participate to the Magic Literal XP

Dear all, We are running a large XP for a research around Magic Literals. A magic literal is a literal (number, booleans,…) that is used to denote something but that it not immediately obvious to the code reader: it can be for example a number but could be also a string, a character or boolean (this is what we want to discover). When you read the code you should be puzzled by the usage of this magic encoding and this is what we want to understand and that you report to use using a special tool. Now identifying magic literal is not easy and we want to measure them. We already did a publication at ESUG last year (but we only did an XP with 100 methods) and now we want to go the world. If you want to read it https://hal.inria.fr/hal-02266137/document Our idea is to have result first in Smalltalk and then, only then check with Java :). But for that we should show to the world that we did a large XP. So we build one and now we need you to help. First we need to evaluate the situation and understand the different cases, as not all literals are "magic". You can help us in this. It can take you 30 min for one experience. Note that a Lot will contain also some other methods because we are mixing methods to collect more information so do not be surprised to see other methods that Polymath’s ones in the polymath XP. - Step 4. Get the tool on the experiment. >From the list grab an inspector and execute MLSExperimentPresenter openOnSample: self ' with the batch you chose as argument You should get the following tool (with different colors :) - yes that theme is funky) . - Step 5. decide whether each literal presented is Magic or not (unabling ‘Hide completed' can help) Remember: 'A magic literal is a literal (number, booleans,…) that is used to denote something but that it not immediately obvious to the code reader' - Step 6. completing one experiment should take less than 30 minutes - Step 7. when done, save the result (button at the bottom of MLSExperimentPresenter) - this will give a STON file named after your batch. - Step 8.
