UK Smalltalk User Group meeting - 28 December 2022
by Giovanni Corriga Dec. 19, 2022

Dec. 19, 2022

For the UKSTUG 2023 holiday meeting, Simberon's David Buck will present Beagle Smalltalk. Over the past 8 years, David has been developing a Smalltalk virtual machine. He used it to release two Smalltalk Games written in VisualWorks to run on Andriod and iPhone devices. More recently, he's re-written the VM to use its own bytecode set and written his own Smalltalk compiler to make it a stand-alone Smalltalk environment called Beagle Smalltalk named after the ship that took Darwin on his voyage of discovery. David plans to release this as an open-source Smalltalk to help and encourage kids to explore the world of programming. In this talk, David presents the current status of the project and where he hopes to go with it. David Buck is the president of Simberon ( http://simberon.com/ ) - a company that has been providing Smalltalk training and consulting for over 25 years. Along with James Robertson, David produced the Industry Misinterpretations podcast and later the Smalltalk Reflections podcast with Craig Latta. David remains a Smalltalk enthusiast and works to spread the word about Smalltalk. This will be an online meeting from home. If you'd like to join us, please sign up in advance on the meeting's Meetup page ( https://www.meetup.com/ukstug/events/290409453/ ) to receive the meeting details.

Looking for a job....
by stephane ducasse Dec. 13, 2022

Dec. 13, 2022

Hello, My name is Daniel Camacho, for the last 6 months I've been working as a Software Engineering intern in the research team RMoD at Inria. We are focused on object-oriented programming languages designing and modeling. In this context, I've implemented a meta-object protocol that allows developers to instrument objects at runtime. This will be the base layer from which a new generation of debugging tools focusing on objects rather than focusing on the execution stack will be built. Now ending my internship, I am seeking for a software engineer position, I am particularly interested research implementation projects, web development and cloud computing field. The fact that I successfully completed my internship assignment is a proven track record of my learning and problem solving abilities. I remain at your disposal to schedule an interview so that we can discuss on how I may be a good fit to your company. Thank you in advance for your attention and I wish you an excellent day. Sincerely Daniel Camacho Santa Cruz Software engineer T: +33 695489293

UK Smalltalk User Group meeting - 30 November 2022
by Giovanni Corriga Nov. 29, 2022

Nov. 29, 2022

For this month's UKSTUG meeting, Dave Mason will talk about Zag Smalltalk, a new Smalltalk VM written in Zig. Dave Mason ( http://sarg.ryerson.ca/dmason/ ) has been a professor of Computer Science at Toronto Metropolitan University (previously known as Ryerson) for 41 years. He has done research on operating systems, software reliability and programming languages. Current research is mostly around Smalltalk and other dynamic languages. If forced to program very low level projects such as virtual machines, he is willing to use Zig or Rust, but for any other purpose, he insists on using higher productivity languages - primarily Smalltalk. Zag Smalltalk ( https://github.com/dvmason/Zag-Smalltalk ) is a principle-based Smalltalk VM. "Principled" means that the only 3 operations are: message send, assignment, and return. 1) it is designed from the ground up to use multi-processing, to leverage multi-core systems. 2) There is no special-casing of methods like ifTrue:ifFalse or whileTrue:, although of course some methods are implemented by primitive methods. It does aggressive inlining of methods and blocks. 3) “Source” code is maintained as ASTs. 4) Compiled code runs in a dual form of threaded code and JIT’ed machine code that seamlessly interoperate. 5) It has a partially-copying and partially-non-moving garbage collector. 6) It keeps many more values as immediate, including symbols. 7) It uses a single-level dispatch mechanism to implement Smalltalk dispatch semantics The research question is, "Can this be made fast enough to be competitive?” Preliminary results are encouraging. This will be an online meeting from home. If you'd like to join us, please sign up in advance on the meeting's Meetup page ( https://www.meetup.com/ukstug/events/290036186 ) to receive the meeting details.
