Fwd: Do you know any candidates for assistant positions in our department

> From: Kim Mens <Kim.Mens(a)uclouvain.be> > Subject: Do you know any candidates for assistant positions in our department > Date: May 10, 2012 10:28:45 AM GMT+02:00 > To: researchers RELEASED <released(a)listes.uclouvain.be> > > Dear all, > > I am urgently looking for possible candidates to fill up some teaching and research assistants in our department. Such an assistant typically has teaching and research duties and gets up to 6 years to obtain a PhD (to be renewed every 2 years). The 6 years is because of the extra teaching load as compared to a normal researchers. Regarding research, they get to choose what professor they want to do research with and negotiate the research topic with him; evidently I'm open to have them under my guidance, but the choice is up to them. Regarding teaching, the teaching charges are distributed equally among the different assistants based on their capacities and interests. The positions are very interesting, and they get a real contract and fair salary (as compared to some other countries). A university level degree of master in computer science or computing science engineering (or something equivalent) is a must. (For foreigners, equivalence of their diploma will need to be verified but that can be done afterwards I think.) Knowledge of French is strongly desired because the bachelor years are still taught in French and we are already quite short on French-speaking researchers to help out with teaching duties in the bachelor years. Knowledge of English is also positive since our Master years are taught in English. Anyway, if you would know anyone, please pass them this information. The deadline is very short since all forms need to be filled in and submitted electronically by May 18, which would mean they need to start working on it right now. A internal selection commission of professors from our department will select the three best candidates from all those who applied. > > More instructions on how to apply can be found here : > http://www.uclouvain.be/11617.html > The candidate needs to fill out the digital form that is available there. If they click on "Listes des postes vacants" they will see the different vacancies currently available for the entire university. The ones related to our department can be found under the faculty "Ecole Polytechnique de Louvain" and more specifically the vacancies with identification numbers 00001941, 00002203, en 00004257. > You will see that 2 of these 3 have a description that is particularly dedicated to computer science. The third one looks more general, but in fact it has been decided recently that it will also go to computer science, but we weren't able to change the description anymore. Interested candidates should thus fill in the form and are strongly advised to apply to each of the 3 positions, even though they can receive only one. (I agree the procedure is a bit absurd, but what did you expect, this is Belgium.) > > Of course you can always contact me for more information or if the procedure is not 100% clear (even though I also had to look all of this up on the official university webpage). > > That's it for now... > > Thanks for your attention to this mail. > > Prof. Kim Mens > Université catholique de Louvain (UCL) > Institute of Information & Communication Technologies, Electronics and Applied Mathematics (ICTEAM) > Ingénierie Informatique (INGI) > Place Sainte Barbe 2, B-1348 Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgique > kim.mens(a)uclouvain.be > > >

Pharo Consortium Important Documents and Request for Feedback
by Stéphane Ducasse May 8, 2012

May 8, 2012

Dear Pharo Friends and Supporters We worked a lot with INRIA lawyers and tried a lot of different scenarios. We arrived to a setup that make sense now we would like to get your input. Please have a look at the following powerpoint presentation and feel free to comment! We provide some sketches for the consortium fees and benefits for you. But we need your input! If you are not in the mailing-list: send us a mail to board(a)pharo-project.org. Remember that what we want to achieve is to be able to pay one (or more) full time engineer to help us improving our system and making that our future is bright. Since it may be difficult to follow closely our vision, dreams and current development efforts you can read the Pharo vision document. https://gforge.inria.fr/frs/download.php/30436/PHARO-ENG-V4.2.pdf https://gforge.inria.fr/frs/download.php/30434/PharoVision.pdf The Pharo Team Remember: The best way to predict the future is to invent it. metaprogramming in smalltalk
by vittly April 29, 2012

April 29, 2012

Hi! Please could you help me understand smalltalk capabilities in metaprogramming? Q: could I construct arbitrary message by program? Create keywords from strings and than build sequence of them to make a message. Mm? Or may be store keywords in variables and then pass variables withing messages extracting stored keywords? Am I dreamer?) -- View this message in context: http://forum.world.st/metaprogramming-in-smalltalk-tp4595928p4595928.html Sent from the ESUG mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

> > Nice! Almost as elegant as Ward's legendary > Symbol>>value: anObject > ^anObject perform: self Mickey!) I don't understand how does it help me. The method is called #perform:with: and it takes two arguments. Yes. But what if I need to emulate "x perform: y with: z" - there is three arguments How can I do this using perform? Yes, there is Behavior class that compile everything so non can help this method is good. But what about perform? Message class also require selector and what is selector for keyword messages? 2012/4/29 Jean-François LEFEVRE <jflefevre(a)gmail.com> > You probably want to do something like this : > > > | x y plu perf wi args | > x := 3. > y := 4. > plu := '+'. > perf := 'perform:withArguments:'. > args := Array new: 1. > args at: 1 put: y. > x perform: perf asSymbol withArguments: args > > You should look the class Message too. > (and all other classes and methods like Behavior, Class, Metaclass, Method > and Object) > > Jean-François > > > > 2012/4/29 Vitaly Kosenko <vitaly.kosenko(a)gmail.com> > >> Ok. perform: is working for arithmetic but what about perform: itself? >> | x y plu perf wi args | >> x := 3. >> y := 4. >> plu := '+'. >> perf := 'perform:'. >> wi := 'with:'. >> args := Array new: 3. >> args >> at: 1 put: plu asSymbol; >> at: 2 put: wi asSymbol; >> at: 3 put: y. >> x perform: perf asSymbol withArguments: args. >> >> This code tells me that there is wrong number of arguments in permforn: >> How can I fix it? >> >> >> 2012/4/29 vittly <vitaly.kosenko(a)gmail.com> >> >>> Mmm thnx for replie! [ANN] Styled Text Editor for Cuis 4.0 Smalltalk
by Bernhard Pieber April 21, 2012

April 21, 2012

Dear Smalltalkers, I am very happy to announce that the Styled Text Editor for the brand new Cuis 4.0 is now available on GitHub [1]. The Styled Text Editor was first presented by me at last year's ESUG in Edinburgh [2]. Thanks to ESUG the presentation was recorded [3]. The Styled Text Editor is a framework for rich text editing using styles as known from popular word processors like Apple Pages or Microsoft Word. It features paragraph and character styles, allowing easy text formatting using styles only. It is intended for applications where users need to work with good looking rich text in a simple and fast way. Rich text commonly refers to text with formatting information like different fonts, sizes, alignments, and emphasis. To make editing as simple as possible instead of individual formatting information end users apply styles to parts of the text. Editing is made fast by keyboard shortcuts for text navigation, selection, and styles selection. Where possible the feel of widely used rich text editors is supported. It includes many features like - numbered and bulleted list paragraph styles - support for images - multiple level undo and redo - text completion using various glossaries including a dictionary of English with about 166.000 words - RTF clipboard (on OS X VMs with the ClipboardExtendedPlugin) The Styled Text Editor is developed in Cuis with the plan to eventually port it to Squeak and Pharo. The development of the Styled Text Editor inspired many changes to Cuis itself, and It is the first package to use the brand new DVCS based development process for external packages for Cuis 4.0. The idea and funding was provided by me, Bernhard Pieber and my company Software Generation. The implementation was done by Juan Vuletich, the mastermind behind Cuis. Thanks Juan for the close cooperation. It was and still is great fun to work with you. We are looking forward to feedback from you. Fork it on GitHub [1], create issues and send us pull requests. ;-) Cheers, Bernhard Pieber [1] https://github.com/bpieber/Cuis-StyledTextEditor [2] http://www.esug.org/wiki/pier/Conferences/2011/Schedule-And-Talks/StyledTex… [3] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUoVbvwspi8&list=PL813665D04A2E4C0A&index=7&…
