"Pharo is Smalltalk inspired"
by Helge Nowak Aug. 5, 2014

Aug. 5, 2014

Dear Pharoers, I stumbled upon Doru’s (BTW excellent, as usual) presentation on Live Objects at NDC 2014. In there he states “Pharo is Smalltalk inspired. … we want to point ourselves that we are Smalltalk inspired because we want to move towards the future”. This implies three things: 1. Pharo is NOT Smalltalk 2. All Smalltalks are not moving towards the future 3. The Pharo community wants to get divorced from the community that gave them birth I am wondering whether this is indeed the official position of the Pharo community? And how the Smalltalkers think about it. Cheers Helge

ESUG 2014 REMINDER: 11th Innovation Technology Awards
by Jordi Delgado Aug. 2, 2014

Aug. 2, 2014

ESUG 2014 REMINDER: 11th Innovation Technology Awards http://esug.org/Conferences/2014/Innovation-Technology-Awards Have you written innovative Smalltalk? The developers of any Smalltalk-based software can enter by submitting a 3-5min video of their software. Entrants demo their systems in a session at the end of Monday August 18th 2014, after which the conference attendees vote. (A vote consists in providing a sorted list of 3 preferred pieces of software.) The top 3 teams with the most innovative software will receive, respectively, 500 Euros, 300 Euros and 200 Euros. The results are announced in the Awards ceremony that is held during the social event. Applicants should provide the following information on the conference registration server. Once you have registered your personal info, an 'Awards' menu allows submitting your software. You can provide this information when you first register, or login again later and update your details. The registration server will open soon. You can start preparing your software right now though. Info to provide: Name of the software Licence information (free, shareware, or commercial) Name of the Smalltalk dialect used Name, Affiliation and Country of developers Besides, it would be great if the submission could include: URL for a video (3-5 min) showing a screencast / demo of the software URL for downloading the software or at least a runnable demo Deadline: August 15th Any Smalltalker can apply (students, companies, ...). The presented piece of code/software should be written in Smalltalk or directly support Smalltalk (e.g. Smalltalk VM). All Smalltalk dialects are accepted. The applicant should be "strongly related" to the presented code, be it as an author, as owner of the copyright/copyleft, or as an official representative of the copyright/copyleft owner. Bests, Jordi

Re: [Esug-list] "Pharo is Smalltalk inspired"
by Richard Sargent Aug. 1, 2014

Aug. 1, 2014

In my opinion, this entire thread is based on an "argument from a false premise". "Pharo is not Smalltalk. Pharo is Smalltalk-inspired." My son is not me. He is inspired by me. Why would I want him to be "just like me"? My ambition is that he will be better than me. He has grown and left home. Does that mean he has divorced me? He doesn't want to be a programmer. Is that a bad thing? I feel like a family friend, watching a child grow into an adult. There is a sense of pride - vicarious - in watching Pharo's growth. The is a sense of anticipation of what Pharo's future will be. Am I concerned that this child will repudiate beliefs and behaviours I hold dear? Not in the least! It comes from good stock and it's being raised by a good and caring family. Go, Pharo! Fly! Show us what you can be. ----------------- Can we stop discussing "When did you stop beating your wife?" and resume discussing what Pharo should be (or become)? -------- Original message -------- From: Helge Nowak <hknowak(a)yahoo.de> Date:2014/07/31 08:29 (GMT-08:00) To: Tudor Girba <tudor(a)tudorgirba.com> Cc: ESUG <esug-list(a)lists.esug.org>,pharo-consortium@lists.gforge.inria.fr,pharo-business@lists.pharo.org Subject: Re: [Esug-list] "Pharo is Smalltalk inspired" Dear Stef and Doru, what Doru is saying seems contradictory to what Stef does (or I do not understand one, or the both of you correctly): Doru says: "Pharo is not Smalltalk. Pharo is Smalltalk-inspired." Whereas Stef says "Pharo is to reinvent Smalltalk" and "I prefer that my students find a job in “Smalltalk”". From which I take that Stef sees himself and Pharo as part of the Smalltalk community. Something I had hoped to hear ;-) I am with Kent Pitman: "Smalltalk" is not technically defined but by the (sub-)communities and their values. The development of Smalltalk will never stop, each dialect may take its own path yet it will stay "Smalltalk" regardless of what you name it. Only if one thinks that being part of the Smalltalk community doesn't serve him/her well he/she will leave it. I don't see how Pharo and its community did a departure from the Smalltalk values and its overall community. And I hope this will stay that way. This topic has been (re)discussed recently spawned by my original post on Pharo is Pharo: http://www.tudorgirba.com/blog/pharo-is-pharo You can choose to see in my words what you wish. I will choose to not fight it. I did it before and it lead nowhere. I will only state that we clearly want to position Pharo to build a future that we do not know at this point in time. Android VM Status
by Jean Baptiste Arnaud Aug. 1, 2014

Aug. 1, 2014

Hi, I made some advance on Android StackVM (using the standard unix sources). :-) Last Unix Stack VM with last 40Pharo image (a little bit modified cause au no-NativeBoost and some constraint from the Android Sandboxing ). Content: - Somes lines of code change in SqUnixMain.c (using if define android, but not a lot, just for allow to load external lib :-). - 1 communication with java / C files, (will be split in two or three file one for printing debugging, one or two for core). - 1 external graphical plugins. vm-display-android, really short but for android, because the rendering is done by Android. All these plugins are includes (not deeply tested yet, but most of them should work): AndroidPlugin (for now I just allow to do debug printing from the image in the logCat), BitBltPlugin, B2DPlugin, BMPReadWriterPlugin, CroquetPlugin, DSAPrims, FFTPlugin, FileCopyPlugin, FilePlugin, FloatArrayPlugin, FloatMathPlugin, JoystickTabletPlugin, JPEGReaderPlugin, LargeIntegers,Matrix2x3Plugin, RePlugin, SecurityPlugin, JPEGReadWriter2Plugin, SocketPlugin, MiscPrimitivePlugin, ZipPlugin. And a lot of debugging. :-). Next step: - fixing all the Event. - Do a real Configuration generator to be able to generate from Jenkins using the NDK. - Then merge in the main PharoVM Git :-). - Do a configuration to allow older pharo image to run on it. Maybe older but I not convince yet. - And obviously a job for allow anybody to create a android package with it's own image :-) See you soon :-) Best Regards Dr Arnaud jbaptiste.arnaud(a)gmail.com

Re: [Esug-list] "Pharo is Smalltalk inspired"
by Steven Kelly July 31, 2014

July 31, 2014

It's maybe not the best wording, but I think it's a good way to look at things. There's not much to be gained from several identical and competing Smalltalks, either for each individually or for the community as a whole, so it seems natural that one or more might want to keep their options open for "making a break" from Smalltalk. I don't think the world outside Smalltalk sees much value in something being "Smalltalk standard compatible", but it does see value in individual parts of Smalltalk (language, core libraries, IDE, ethos). Thinking freely from a starting point of Smalltalk might give rise to something that includes most that is great about Smalltalk, with extra good it's from other ecosystems, and its own improvements. As every non-Smalltalker knows "Smalltalk failed", having a new identity would make the result more marketable. I'm not saying this is the right approach, and certainly not the only one (I love my Smalltalk!), but it seems reasonable enough. Good luck to all! CFP - Workshop on Evaluation and Usability of Programming Languages and Tools (PLATEAU)
by Craig Anslow July 17, 2014

July 17, 2014

PLATEAU 2014 - CALL FOR PAPERS Fifth Workshop on Evaluation and Usability of Programming Languages and Tools (PLATEAU) Portland, Oregon, United States http://2014.splashcon.org/track/plateau2014 Workshop co-located with SPLASH, 20-24 October, 2014 http://2014.splashcon.org/ ** Theme ** Programming languages exist to enable programmers to develop software effectively. But how efficiently programmers can write software depends on the usability of the languages and tools that they develop with. The aim of this workshop is to discuss methods, metrics and techniques for evaluating the usability of languages and language tools. The supposed benefits of such languages and tools cover a large space, including making programs easier to read, write, and maintain; allowing programmers to write more flexible and powerful programs; and restricting programs to make them more safe and secure. PLATEAU gathers the intersection of researchers in the programming language, programming tool, and human-computer interaction communities to share their research and discuss the future of evaluation and usability of programming languages and tools. Some particular areas of interest are: - empirical studies of programming languages - methodologies and philosophies behind language and tool evaluation - software design metrics and their relations to the underlying language - user studies of language features and software engineering tools - visual techniques for understanding programming languages - critical comparisons of programming paradigms - tools to support evaluating programming languages - psychology of programming ** Submission Details ** PLATEAU encourages submissions of three types of papers: Research and position papers: We encourage papers that describe work-in-progress or recently completed work based on the themes and goals of the workshop or related topics, report on experiences gained, question accepted wisdom, raise challenging open problems, or propose speculative new approaches. We will accept two types of papers: research papers up to 8 pages in length; and position papers up to 2 pages in length. Hypotheses papers: Hypotheses papers explicitly identify beliefs of the research community or software industry about how a programming language, programming language feature, or programming language tool affects programming practice. Hypotheses can be collected from mailing lists, blog posts, paper introductions, developer forums, or interviews. Papers should clearly document the source(s) of each hypothesis and discuss the importance, use, and relevance of the hypotheses on research or practice. Papers may also, but are not required to, review evidence for or against the hypotheses identified. Hypotheses papers can be up to 4 pages in length. Papers will be published in the ACM Digital Library at the authors’ discretion. ** Important Dates ** Workshop paper submission due - 1 August, 2014 Notification to authors - 22 August, 2014 Early registration deadline - 19 September, 2014 ** Keynote ** Josh Bloch, former Chief Java Architect at Google and Distinguished Engineer at Sun Microsystems. ** Workshop Organizers ** Thomas LaToza, University of California, Irvine Joshua Sunshine, Carnegie Mellon University Craig Anslow, University of Calgary ** Program Committee ** Jennifer Baldwin, University of Victoria Andrew Begel, Microsoft Research Andrew Black, Portland State University Alan Blackwell, University of Cambridge Jeffrey Carver, University of Alabama Sebastian Erdweg, TU Darmstadt Thomas Fritz, University of Zurich Stefan Hanenberg, University of Duisburg-Essen Matthias Hauswirth, University of Lugano Ciera Jaspan, Google Leo Meyerovich, UC Berkeley Gail Murphy, University of British Columbia Emerson Murphy-Hill, NC State James Noble, Victoria University of Wellington Chris Parnin, NC State Janet Siegmund, University of Passau Andreas Stefik, University of Nevada, Las Vegas Chris Scaffidi, Oregon State University Éric Tanter, University of Chile — Kind regards, Craig Craig Anslow, PhD Postdoctoral Research Fellow Department of Computer Science University of Calgary, Canada T: 403 210 8159 E: craig.anslow(a)ucalgary.ca<mailto:craig.anslow@ucalgary.ca> W: http://anslow.cpsc.ucalgary.ca/

esug 2014 - looking for a late connection to cambridge
by Tudor Girba July 15, 2014

Hi, I am looking for options to book the travel to Cambridge. The only flight the Stansted airport available to me arrives at 23:00. Unfortunately, the latest train leaves Stansted at 23:04 so I cannot make it to that one. Does anyone know another way to reach Cambridge from Stansted? How much would a cab cost? Couch surfing
by Johan Briglia July 10, 2014

July 10, 2014

Hi all, This year I'll be one of the several student volunteers (to offer my help in the next ESUG) and I actually need a little help for a little something about it. As a student I had to choose the cheapest traveling agenda, so I will arrive one day earlier than expected. It's not a problem but I need to find a place to sleep between Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th. So I'm asking if anyone would be so kind to lend me a couch just for a night? I don't take much space, and I can cook! ;) As a relatively new smalltalker, I think it best to introduce myself: I'm Johan Briglia, PhD student in Psychology at Montpellier (south of France) where I'm working on the emergence of human memory and complex behaviors from neural networks. I'm using smalltalk to emulate dynamical networks in order to test some psychological theories, as a consolidation of AI research. Thank you for your help, and see you soon anyway! Johan

[ANN] SqueakJS 0.2 released, now runs Etoys
by Bert Freudenberg July 4, 2014

July 4, 2014

Hi all, my SqueakJS VM has reached a major milestone. It is now sufficiently complete to run a full Etoys image (and possibly other non-closure images, too). It has support for most BitBlt modes, WarpBlt, even some Balloon2D rendering (for TTF fonts), a virtual file system, image saving etc. Try it: http://bertfreudenberg.github.io/SqueakJS/etoys/ (Safari and IE are significantly faster than Firefox and Chrome, best is Safari Webkit nightly, works on iPad too, hopefully Android) For more details, see my blogpost: http://croquetweak.blogspot.de/2014/07/squeakjs-runs-etoys-now.html Feedback and contributions welcome :) - Bert -

[ANN] Amber 0.12.6 released!
by Nicolas Petton July 1, 2014

July 1, 2014

Hi! After two months of development we are happy to announce the release of Amber 0.12.6 (skipping 0.12.5 for technical reasons). The team has once again been busy improving Amber to make it rock more than ever! With 260 commits done by 8 contributors, this release brings several important improvements as well as the usual bug fixes. Highlights: - Helios now has a test runner - The `amber-cli` npm package installs the CLI tooling. `amber` is not to be installed globally any more. Instead, install `amber-cli` with `npm install -g amber-cli`. - New `amber-init` command: After installing the cli tooling, `amber init` initializes a new project. - `amber` and `amberc` cli tools can now be found in the `external` directory and in dedicated npm packages. - Amber now parses `$c` character literals. - Bootstrap 3 can be used in Amber projects (no more nameclash with Helios' bootstrap 2 using bootstrap2.3.2 name). - Wider range of jQuery versions allowed. API changes: + String >> + value: + ProtocolAnnouncement >> + package + Behavior >> + isTestClass + Package >> + isTestPackage + amber/{devel,deploy,lang} exports + nil + amber/helpers exports + nil We would like to thank the contributors who made this release possible, and especially Ryan Simmons for his work on the Helios Test Runner. /The Amber crew.
