New Mars examples: Package Browser and Test Runner

Hi everyone! I want to let you know that I've just posted a screencast in my blog about the new Mars Package Browser and Test Runner<http://marsonpharo.wordpress.com/2013/09/24/marspackagebrowser-and-marstest…> . These examples are not really intended as being the definitive package browser or test runner, but to start experiencing how is it to build a real application using Mars and to showcase some widgets. Anyway, it's cool :) The Package browser is not so different to the system browser example I showed before, but the Test Runner is definitely my favorite example so far. We have an open PhD position for which we are looking for candidates with strong smalltalk skills. This PhD opens in the scope of the ERATO european project, This project aims at developping a new space-oriented system-on-chip, with reconfigurable capabilities. The project gathers many industrial partners (ASTRIUM, THALES, ...) and three academic partners. Our institute is in charge of developping the programming environment. We benefit from a large legacy, written in visualworks. The thesis will focus on industrial research perspectives (agile tools development, configuration compaction, target modeling, code generation, ...). One important contribution will be to expose a manipulation API to application Designers while protecting the hardware intellectual property. Also some compression schemes, used for video coding, will be stressed against practical experimentation when downsizing the bitstream (binary representation of the application). We are happy to announce version 4.8 of the Moose Suite: http://moosetechnology.org/download/4.8 Description -- This was supposed to be a minor release, but in the end it turned out to be a major release with significant improvements. The key highlights are: - Based on Pharo 2.0. - All built-in visualizations use Roassal. - Roassal received a significant performance boost and new smart graph layouts like TreeMapLayout or ForceBasedLayout. - Roassal uses Athens for nice looking vectorial graphics. - New charting engine based on Roassal: Graph-ET. - Glamour changed to enable dynamic scripts, while still remaining backward compatible. - Glamour received a RubricTextPresentation for using the new Rubric text morph. - Glamour, Roassal, EyeSee, Graph-ET editors are more robust when dealing with errors in scripts.- New GTDebugger with dedicated workflows for Announcements, PetitParser and Glamour itself. - Extended GTInspector for several object types. - Usable version of GTMetaceller for handling Metacello configurations. - FAMIX was strengthen to handle functions better in various programming languages. - New free type fonts and simpler whitespace-loving theme. - Lower memory footprint for large models. - Faster MSE import. I was planning on taking the bus to Annecy, but apparently there is only one bus that Sunday, which arrives at 2200. Have you written innovative Smalltalk? The developers of any Smalltalk-based software can enter by submitting a 3-5min video of their software. Entrants demo their systems in a session at the end of Monday September 9th 2013, after which the conference attendees vote. (A vote consists in providing a sorted list of 3 preferred pieces of software.) The top 3 teams with the most innovative software will receive, respectively, 500 Euros, 300 Euros and 200 Euros. The results are announced in the Awards ceremony that is held during the social event. Applicants should provide the following information on the conference registration server. Once you have registered your personal info, an 'Awards' menu allows submitting your software. You can provide this information when you first register, or login again later and update your details. Info to provide: Name of the software Licence information (free, shareware, or commercial) Name of the Smalltalk dialect used Name, Affiliation and Country of developers Besides, it would be great if the submission could include: URL for a video (3-5 min) showing a screencast / demo of the software URL for downloading the software or at least a runnable demo Deadline: September 7th Any Smalltalker can apply (students, companies, ...). The presented piece of code/software should be written in Smalltalk or directly support Smalltalk (e.g. Smalltalk VM). All Smalltalk dialects are accepted. The applicant should be "strongly related" to the presented code, be it as an author, as owner of the copyright/copyleft, or as an official representative of the copyright/copyleft owner.
