[ANN] Glamour on Seaside - first version

Hi, We are happy to announce the first version of Glamour on Seaside. This work was carried out by Andrei Vasile Chis and was sponsored by ESUG. The project offers a Seaside-based rendering of Glamour browsers. In other words, once you have a browser in Glamour, you can now simply display it on the web. You can obtain the code in two ways: - Nightly built image: http://hudson.moosetechnology.org/job/moose-with-glamour-seaside/lastSucces… - Metacello configuration loadable in Pharo 1.1 (not Core) Gofer new squeaksource: 'Glamour'; package: 'ConfigurationOfGlamourSeaside'; load. (Smalltalk at: #ConfigurationOfGlamourSeaside) loadDefault. Position Vacancy: New Mexico Highlands University

Position Vacancy (Subject to funding and program approval) New Mexico Highlands University plans to offer both an undergraduate (BS) and graduate (MS) degree in Software-driven Systems Design. The undergraduate program is in place and State of New Mexico approval of the graduate program is in its final stages. Final approval during the legislative session in February 2011 is hoped for but is not guaranteed. If approval is forthcoming the position will be open as early as summer term (May 2011) and definitely by fall term (August 2011). If approval is not obtained (the legislature will be concentrating on economic issues this session), the dates will slip to May or August 2012. The position: Visiting Professor, School of Business Administration. Contract is renewable annually for up to five years. Compensation: $50,000 - $60,000, depending on qualifications, plus standard fringe benefits (health, retirement, dental). Additional compensation, from project work, is possible. Expected Start Date: May 20th, 2011 or August 15th, 2011. Qualifications: • Masters degree in Computer Science (software engineering specialization), MIS, Informatics or similar degree focused on software development and systems design. • Extensive knowledge of Squeak (ideally Pharo), its extensions (e.g. Seaside), and libraries (CMS, version control, morphic, etc.) plus several years experience using Squeak to develop commercial or research applications. • Demonstrated multi-disciplinary / cross-disciplinary commitment; e.g. multiple degrees, publications or teaching experience across disciplinary boundaries, multi-disciplinary honors teaching. • Demonstrated ability to use a hybrid approach to instruction and mentoring, combining the use of on-line and in-class resources and techniques. • The position does not required full-time residency in New Mexico, but will require at least 26 weeks of residency (in two to four week blocks), annually. Full-time residency is highly desirable, but not an absolute essential. Expectations: This position is unlike any other academic position, because of the unique nature of the program it supports. Faculty are expected to spend up to forty hours a week, while in residence, in the Studio working with students at all levels, and delivering academic content “on-demand” and in a highly modular and accelerated fashion. Faculty are expected to define (and seek grant funding for) research projects and involve students in both the conduct of the research and co-authoring of publications arising from the research. Faculty may take on project management responsibilities (receiving appropriate additional compensation) for commercial projects underway in the Studio. The program emphasizes the ability to think and to employ multiple perspectives (systems, object, design, agile, and computational thinking) and faculty are expected to help students develop this kind of thinking capability – far more challenging than simply preparing them to pass a final exam. Program: This program is unique: in focus, in structure, and in terms of the demands placed on faculty. The stated goal of the program is to graduate students as full-participating members of a professional community dedicated to and capable of using computing and software technology to analyze and solve the ‘wicked’ problems confronting business enterprises, communities, and global societies. Graduates will be “modern polymaths” masters not of all extant knowledge but who have learned and integrated knowledge from multiple disciplines and domains. The program is experience-based. All students will spend significant amounts of time (up to thirty-two hours a week) in a Studio – simultaneously working on real-world projects for paying customers and learning new subject matter. Students will work side-by-side- with professionals (acting as project managers and guarantors of successful delivery) who will provide tacit knowledge and mentoring. [Faculty members are eligible, and encouraged, to assume this kind of professional role – for additional compensation.] The University works with one or more private sector entities, the latter responsible for contracting and managing projects, generating sufficient revenues to pay for professionals, student apprenticeship wages, and program expenses (e.g. travel to conferences). The program is competency-based (approximately 100 currently defined) and not course-based. All competencies are defined at seven different levels (from “understands concepts as evidenced by objective test” to “makes an original contribution to the community”) and student progress (and graduation) is based on number of competencies demonstrated at level. Curricular subject matter is presented in highly modular form (think in term of one-credit, 16 face-time hours) and utilizes a combination of on-line and self-paced study, broadcast (e.g. webinar format), and in-class workshops. Students define iterative and incremental “individual education plans” every eight weeks and those plans, collectively, defined the curricular material to be delivered. Knowledge integration and motivation for learning is provided by the project and studio context in which all instruction is delivered. The Studio is a “one-room classroom” – all students, faculty, and professionals occupy the same room at the same time (much like the ideal Agile work room or the botegga where Leonardo was an apprentice and later a Master). Multiple projects are underway, with different groups working on different projects. The rhythm of the Studio is defined with iterative cycles, each beginning with a planning session and ending with a retrospective. Within the cycles are defined, repetitive, periods for special activities like reader and writer workshops, social activities, and learning “spikes.” We would like to provide the students with a comprehensive development tool and environment – Smalltalk/Squeak – as a foundation for all of their technical software development learning and activities. The use of a uniform environment will make it easier to focus on the thinking behind the technology and the analysis of problems and design of solutions. When marketplace and technical demands indicate, students will learn prevailing technologies (ranging from HTML to Java – to relational database) and new technologies (e.g. non-relational and document databases) as alternatives to the Smalltalk base. Students will leave with the same level of expertise and understanding of current mainstream tools and technologies as graduates of any other CS / MIS program; but they will also have the underlying foundation made possible with the common tool and environment. The subject of the original post should perhaps have been: "Is Cincom slowly killing Visual Smalltalk Enterprise *customers*". Who shot VSE a long time ago is another discussion. As are the discussion of how/whether one could/should port the applications to other Smalltalk dialects. My focus is entirely on how the current VSE users can extend the life of their applications on the VSE platform. Even though development on VSE stopped more than 10 years ago, the applications are still running today on current operating system versions and with on-par performance. Part of VSE is closed source; The VM, the compiler and several other stuff. Though clever hacking/patching bugs in these closed parts of VSE have been fixes by the community since the official development stopped. But Cincom (who has the exclusive rights to make money from supporting the product) has now unleashed its lawyers, and are threatening some of the most active people in the community. The amount of "lawyer muscle" behind the threats are actually keeping people from even replying to this post. I did have a deep respect for Cincom; they have done a great job for the Smalltalk community. I don't know where in their organization the "money matters more than ethics" policy is in action. It is not among the Smalltalk people we all know, but the ones who are pulling the strings are in fact doing a lot of damage to their corporate image. I know that some Cincom employees have commented on my post, but I still have had no answers to the main question: Are Cincom willing to donate/sell their "exclusive exploratory rights to the VSE product"? Please note: The question is not about the IP. It is only about the rights that Cincom holds, oh and by the way; are Cincom willing to disclose the contact they have with Seagull regarding these rights? :) This is fun because one of the board member raised the question just before this remark. We are not sure that rebranding is good but so far I like your slogan. And we welcome any smalltalker. The goals of esug are simple (you can see that in the first talk of esug and also the one of serge about future actions) - create energy in the community (via the conf via new user groups) - support open-source development - support business in Smalltalk - push/help teacher teaching Smalltalk - bring open-source and business together (check my last talk at Barcelona - we need strong vendors and strong open-source) ESUG never took into account geographic perspective, we sent books all over the world in the past. Otherwise we push their creation. If you have a project that might help the Smalltalk community in someway (free software project, writing books, organizing an event, ...), you are eligible to ESUG support. Just my humble thoughts... I watched the talks from Cincom and Instantiations , and was somewhat surprised of the very short time they were given. They are sponsors of the event, and should imho get more time to promote their offerings. The talks from the vendors was biased towards existing customers, and I think that the vendors should be given a chance to promote the offerings; show their usp's, showcase their references, present licensing information, prices etc. etc. Basically allow them to give the sales pitch, they would normally use to impress a prospect. -- Henrik Høyer, sPeople ApS Chief Software Architect (+45) 4029 2092

Dear all >From the reactions to my post, I fear that people might have misunderstood me. Bear in mind, that I am not a native English speaker - though my language might sound harsh and offensive, I do have the best intensions. The subject of the original post should perhaps have been: "Is Cincom slowly killing Visual Smalltalk Enterprise *customers*". Who shot VSE a long time ago is another discussion. As are the discussion of how/whether one could/should port the applications to other Smalltalk dialects. My focus is entirely on how the current VSE users can extend the life of their applications on the VSE platform. Even though development on VSE stopped more than 10 years ago, the applications are still running today on current operating system versions and with on-par performance. Part of VSE is closed source; The VM, the compiler and several other stuff. Though clever hacking/patching bugs in these closed parts of VSE have been fixes by the community since the official development stopped. But Cincom (who has the exclusive rights to make money from supporting the product) has now unleashed its lawyers, and are threatening some of the most active people in the community. The amount of "lawyer muscle" behind the threats are actually keeping people from even replying to this post. I did have a deep respect for Cincom; they have done a great job for the Smalltalk community. I don't know where in their organization the "money matters more than ethics" policy is in action. It is not among the Smalltalk people we all know, but the ones who are pulling the strings are in fact doing a lot of damage to their corporate image. I know that some Cincom employees have commented on my post, but I still have had no answers to the main question: Are Cincom willing to donate/sell their "exclusive exploratory rights to the VSE product"? Please note: The question is not about the IP. It is only about the rights that Cincom holds, oh and by the way; are Cincom willing to disclose the contact they have with Seagull regarding these rights? Is Cincom slowly killing Visual Smalltalk Enterprice?

Dear All If you have forgotten about Visual Smalltalk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visual_Smalltalk_Enterprise) it is this really cool Smalltalk dialect that enables users to build native Windows applications. Visual Smalltalk is one of the original Smalltalk dialects, and was made by Digitalk. In 1995 active development stopped when the merger between ParcPlace and Digitalk happened. VSE has since been in the hands of ParcPlace-Digitalk, then ObjectShare, and since 1999 Cincom. The state of affair of Visual Smalltalk Enterprise (VSE) is not optimal. The VSE community has make several attempts in the past to clear this up. These attempts has all been made quietly and discrete. When I left ESUG last year I was confident that there was a future for open-sourcing VSE. Unfortunately I have since learned that Cincom are not willing to change anything, and are regarding VSE as a cash cow. The current status is: Cincom stopped all work on the VSE platform more than a decade ago Cincom continues to collect support fees for VSE Cincom has raised the price for VSE licenses Cincom only fixes bug on a case-by-case matter. Bugs fixed for one customer is not made available to other customers. Cincom charges huge money for fixing bugs. They charge by the hour, and since they don't have the knowledge one can expect 50-100 hours for trivial fixes Cincom does not hold the IP for VSE - Seagull Software does Cincom has exclusive rights for selling and supporting VSE Seagull Software has no problem selling/donating the IP Cincom has refused to sell/donate their rights Due to the above, VSE users are jumping through hoops to actually use the product on newer operating systems. To make the matters worse, every time anyone makes a bug fix, we all fear that Cincom will drop its lawyer muscle on us. I believe that the time has come to stop being discrete and speak up in public. For VSE to have a future we need to act now. I would love for Cincom to comment on these issues. Does Cincom really see the free support and maintenance made by the community as a threat to their business? Are Cincom interested in actually supporting VSE, and not just collecting money from their trapped customers? Does Cincom really believe that VSE customers will migrate to other products supplied by them, taking only their word for not abandoning them again in the future? Unfortunately I am not able to attend ESUG this year, but I hope that others will raise these questions.
