If you arrive GVA by plane, there is a machine delivering free train tickets to the city center where you pick up your luggage. 7 minute train trip to the main station. Gare routiere is a few minutes walk from the back entrance of the train station. You pass a large postal building and then have a parking lot for busses on your left, Place Dorciere. There is also an SBB train from the airport to the train station which costs CHF 2.50. I'm arriving at about 7:30 on Saturday.
